Hey everyone, I've been learning about my bike and don't know very much. I just replaced the fuel last night and did an oil change. I replaced the battery, regulator, and oil filter. I tested the stator for voltage and it's putting out the right stuff.

For the longest I thought my bike was sucking the juice out and I just switched to a gel battery and it started keeping a charge. I drove it around a bit last night and then drove it to work this morning. Soon as I got to work my exhaust starting popping and then when I came to a stop at the stop sign my idle went from 2000 to 6000. I was thinking this had to do with the Carbs but I know nothing about the carbs or anything other than what I've replaced. Anyone have any suggestions?

My first guess would be that your choke could be stuck.

Second would be that your idle may be set a bit too high. From the wiki:

Suzuki recommends an idle of 1100-1300, with 1200 as the ideal speed. To adjust the idle speed, first warm up the engine with a 15 minute ride. Keep the engine running and twist the idle adjust screw until it hovers within the 1100-1300 speed. To find the idle adjust screw look on the bottom the carburators above the oil fill hole.

On the image below, the screw pointing downward from the bottom of the carbs is the idle adjust screw:

Thanks! So I was outside about 20 minutes ago and turned the idle screw down and it fixed it. I had an old friend come over and turn that when my bike was taking too long to warm up which is different problem all together. Tomorrow morning I'll cold start it with the choke and wait 30-45 seconds to turn the choke off. I already know I should clean the carbs. I'm almost positive nobody has cleaned the carbs since it was bought it 2009. So I'll be doing that this weekend most likely.

Glad I could help! Just as an FYI, the GS takes notoriously long to fully warm up: 15 or so minutes of actual riding, not just a minute or two of idling. This is not a "problem" that needs to be fixed, its just the nature of the bike. While it should idle semi-normally after a minute or two running with the choke on, that doesn't mean the bike is fully warmed up.
