... practice your braking!

Not enough riders keep up with their life-saving skills practice.  You won't be able to adequately brake in an emergency if you haven't been practicing.

Find an empty parking lot and do a few practice brakes on your next ride.  Use landmarks to set a cue and a goal for yourself, try to shorten that distance up a little more each time.

Don't just practice in a straight line either, hazards can and will come up in curves, too.  In case you're unaware, you should follow a "straighten then brake" procedure.  Grabbing a handful while 45° over could have undesired results!

Be safe!

Knowing how to stop is important, but knowing what might cause you to stop is just as important too. Your reaction time will be much, much lower if you were ready for that car to change lanes without looking. Those YouTube helmet camera vids are great for learning about that.
