I have a phenomenal car engine mechanic, who has done motorcycle heads for me in the past as well as a few car motors and motorcycle cyls etc etc.
I have the freedom to irritate those guys to give me a schedule and then turn up there and video cam everything, except I cant do it now in the corona virus shadow.
But you want to send it or get it to him in Kannapolis NC - PM me, I'll get you his number after getting a-ok from him.
Cool.

Reminder, compression should be tested on a warm engine, on a cold engine it's a crap shoot.

The Buddha

The motor has a spec-ed cold and hot compression number. The cold compression is important because that translates to suction from it as well.

Thread hijack, but close to on=topic. Checked mine today. New old '89. Many small issues on this bike.

left exhaust, .006, Fine
right intake, .005. Fine

Left intake, less than .0015, with 2.70 shim

Right exhaust, .014 with 2.5 shim. Looks like I can buy 2.45 or 2.40 shim

And drop the 2.50 shim into left intake and remeasure before buying anything at all.

Does this look right?

BTW I almost with it was toast so I could take Buddha up on his relay offer, which he offered to JaxGS500 not me. I hope this works out well and soon for JaxGS500.

For JaxGS500, consider to remove the shim and then measure with none. 2.X and move forward from there. But wear seems likely.

The Buddha

Its not limited to Jax or any one else - you want to send it to my mech - let me know and I'll ask him. No reason he's say OK to one and not another.

But you're no where near 2.15. 2.5 to 2.15 is 30-50K. But you cant go to 250 from 270 if the bucket rotates but wont take a feeler gauge - that's 265.
You also cant put in another shim and measure it - shims tend to float on the oil and read tight, Some people say you turn a few times letting the cam squeeze the oil out that makes it readable. Not sure, I do my math and put the shim in and done.

Cool.

If you decide to do this - do not turn the motor without a shim in place. You can pull a shim and see if the thing is so worn the clearance drops to under 1mm or whatever.

There is a clean looking head with valves springs and cams for sale on the "Suzuki GS500" group of Facebook. $150. I saw it a few minutes ago.  Seller is in Maryland.

That's what I did when I had valve problems. Replaced my head with a used head for about $150. Got 20,000 miles out of it before needing to actually rebuild the top end.

An update: I stripped the head down and packaged it up in a USPS Large Flat Rate Box, lining the box all around with some plywood and putting a few shop rags in to make sure all was secure. Sent it off the Chris Schumann of Schumann Motors in Portland. The left exhaust was burnt (he made a new one) and did an excellent job. His work looks fantastic, you could even call it "art" and I have no trouble referring him. I'm still new to using the forum so if you'd like a few pictures I was able to post them on the FB site I'm with as well. My cylinder and pistons are getting checked out at a local shop that has the means to check measurements and do a honing of the cylinders and then it'll be reassembly time, hopefully next week that'll commence. Until then I'll be browsing and studying up on the next steps...

Why did he make a valve ? That sounds rather worrisome to me. You can recut seats and recut valves - but make ?
BTW I'd have put kibblewhite black diamond valves in them and not bother with the stock one but I think the Suzuki valves are pretty good, not made of cheese like Kawi.

Yeah, what? Make a valve?
Suzuki still sells the valves.

We're back. Well actually not quite back. I had to leave this thread unexpectedly to travel down to SoCal for treatment for my throat cancer when an opening came up at a Proton radiation center. It hasn't been the he most fun two months but we'll be headed home to Reno this week and I'm looking forward to getting the GS put back together and on the road.
When last I posted I'd pulled the cylinder and pistons to get the dimensions. You'll recall the cylinder with the bad exhaust valve was 70psi. Turns out that bore, piston and rings were all within spec. As for the right cylinder the bore was quite a ways out of spec, apparently enough to give me the 105psi reading. So what did I do?
I had the cylinders overbored.050 with OEM pistons and rings. So all the bits are on the workbench and I'm looking forward to getting back at it with a little help from my forum friends.

PeteGS just posted this link in my cam chain thread, looks like it's exactly what you need. You can go all the way down to 140x29.5
