Hey I just picked up a 2009 Suzuki gs500f and it had valves that met each other so I replaced the head with one from a 2006. It has troubles idling (haven't touched the carburetor at all) and has a horrible ticking noise that gets louder as it revs. Camshafts didn't have any play when I installed them and bearings didn't have any scoring. Oil has no shine to it. What am I missing?

Are you sure the timing is right? beware the chain tensioner can throw off the adjustment.look for the correct procedure in service manual.

you can also move the bike side to side to check for the cam walk noise.
try to identify if the noise is under load, or when revs are hanging it decreases.
how much valve gap you have?
it sounds like valves hammering seats out of timing for me. impossible to know for sure with a video.

I just opened it up again, timing is still good, value clearances are not great with 2 being within spec and 2 less than .03. Could this be the reason for the ticks? Not going to ride it for now just in case so I don't burn out the valves.

Sorry Toshi, sounds terrible. I would take out cams and get a
good look at the rocker arms, valve adjusters and valve tips,
something serious amiss.

Check cam chain guide(s) and adjuster too.

I've run exhaust valves at less than 0.04 mm clearance for months and never noticed ticking that loud. Of course they could still have been in spec. My feeler gauges didn't go any lower than 0.04 mm so I couldn't say for sure. How did you measure clearances less than 0.03 mm? The ones out of spec were on the exhaust side, right? For reference, they will tend to fall out of spec quicker than the intake side. Its possible that is the reason for your ticking noise, it would definitely be the reason for poor idle. I would fix that before looking at anything else for sure. You can safely go up to 0.15 mm clearance on the exhaust valves, which is what I set mine to last time I did them. That should take care of your clearances for the next couple of years I would say. Also check your intake clearances and get them as close to 0.08 mm as you can.
