OK i know alot of you have been asking me how to drill the baffle out of your stock GS500 canister. It's quite simple, i'm only 17 and it didn't take long.

step 1
Saftey first! when you are drilling the exhuast baffle out, always use eye protection because as I encountered, little bits of metal can fly out and hit you in the eye or anywhere, and they can be really HOT!! I used a pair of sunglasses and they worked fine.

step 2
use a standard drill (a corded one worked for me) like this one and the bit that I used was a modified phillip's head (sharpened point).

step 3
when starting this process you should have someone to sit on the bike with the brake applied becuase the force you put on your canister with the drill may cause your bike to tip over, and you don't want that to happen.

step 4
starting out, with the drill in your hand place the end of the bit between the inner tip and the outer tip, which is the baffle. (if you have a GS you know what I'm talking about, just look and you will see if you don't know). Try to line the bit up in the middle of the baffle, precision ins't cutial but recommended.

step 5
when starting the actual drilling, I would start with just 1 hole to see what you getting youself into. Drill your holes in sequence: start with 4 points then drill between each of those 4, then again. Try to squeeze in as many holes as you can until you can't fit anymore. NOTE: there will be some metal build up sitting inside the bottom of the outer tip. Crank the bike up and rev it till it all blows out and then continue drilling.

step 6
when you get done, it should look something like a tommy gun. or a revolver clip. The inner tip cannot be removed by drilling this. I however, drilled as many holes as I could and then with the drill in each hole I put pressure on the side of each hole to cut through to the next one. I now have a cut out ring around my inner tip. the actual inner tip is still standing, i'm guessing it is supported way inside the muffler because it doesn't wobble or anything.

step 7
buy a set of earplugs!! ok so it's not that loud but it can wake your neighbors up. It's as loud as about a stock harley sportster I guess. My friend has a TL1000 (v-twin) and it has the same rumble to it, except a higer pitch. sounds good though, all of my friends agree it sounds better than it did before :thumb:

step 8
 enjoy!

can you post some pic's of it ?
and is the only benefit to this that the pipe is louder ? (sort of like a cheap way around going and buying a slip on ?)

a phillips drill bit ? so not an actual drill bit, but the one you'd normally use to screw a screw into wood ?

dorian chapman

nevermind, i just found your other post about it. hoefully someone will get some pis

Somebody please tell the new GS500 owner why I would want to do that.

Thank you.

Is this where you drill the holes ? I am very new to bikes, but I wouldn't mind mine sounding louder.
thanks

From the way the author is talking I'd say yes.

From a mechanical standpoint I'd say yes.

Did something similar to the exhaust on my old 50cc moped.

Should make a noticable difference although I don't know if it's enought to require a rejet.

wicked !
just finished. three holes was loud enough for me (with a 3/8th's bit)

Gotta go ride it around the block a couple times and piss off as many people as possible...I'll post pics when I'm back of the finished holes.

THAT IS EXACTLY WHERE YOU SHOULD DRILL, in intervals just like that!! thats how i did it.
