So I'm trying to make plans for a trip I'm doing. First I need to figure out how many miles I can do in a day. Time isnt a huge factor. I'm looking at about 1k up there(mobile al to grand rapids MI) I'll be camping along the way. I'm figureing around 2-4 days to get there. The most I've done is about 250 in a day not rushing over about 4 hours breaks included.  I'm thinking I could do 500 if I made it a long day, maybe more I'm not to sure. I'd be going back to stock bars w/ a mini f-16 windshield. So comfort is the biggest factor. Any ideas? What can ya'll do on average on a GS w/ a fairly stock set up???

hmmm...

if time is not a factor and there is no need in pushing yourself to get there sooner, why do it?

If your comfortable doing 500 a day, do it, but if you start getting sore or tired or cramped... its time to get off.

Above all else, listen to your body, it will tell you when its had enough!

I can easily soak up 350miles a day up and down the oregon coast.
On the freeway were the miles just go by 500 wouldent be all that bad.

But as was stated before, listen to your body, if you start to get fatigued its very easy to loose focus.
take your time and enjoy the ride.

I did 500 on my bike stock w/ Sirinath bars ( way more comfortable at speed) shorty exaust (it comes out right under my footpegs) I spend most of my time laid down on my tank bag with my feet kicked up over the pass pegs,  I have ridden extended time with my feet all the way up on the pass seat but you lose  the feeling of being in control of the bike because you can't use your lower body to lean on it.   it took me about 7 hours though, three gas stops and about a two hour break in the middle added on  9 total for the trip.  avrage speed 85

You do need to practice to do higher mileages.  Butt hurts less, legs don't cramp (I get hip flexor cramps since I'm tall!), and especially pains from twisting the throttle or using the clutch.  Most times this is due to overuse of muscles, so more practice gets you more mileage!  I figure I could do over 300 miles if most were on the highway.  Wear earplugs!

Hi there,
I've done 450 miles a day, two days in a row, for a total of 900 miles, on my 91 GS500E from PA to Wisconsin, then two days for a visit with friends before heading back home, again with two 450-mile days. It was heaven and I can't wait to do it again. That was with the stock seat and now I have a Corbin saddle, so it should be very comfy!
On my 1975 Honda CB400F back in 1984, I rode 500 miles in one day to a friend's wedding in Omaha, Neb., from Madison, Wisc., where I was going to college. It was a great trip, too.  Two days at the wedding then 500 miles home in one day.
I like to ride two hours, then stop for gas and a stretch. It works well for me and I find it very enjoyable.
Don't forget to pack a good tool kit and a few spares, as well as a good rain suit and extra gloves. If you take it, hopefully you won't need any of it. But if you DON'T take the extra stuff, it almost guarantees you'll need it.  :)
Have a great trip!
Yours,
Todd
