Hi there,
I heard somewhere that GS500 bike has a helmet lock somewhere. But I can't figure out how to find it, much less how to use it
Can someone help me out with this? :)
Thanks
lift off the seat and you'll see a little hook...that's the helmet lock...
Yep - here's a picture (of the seat latch) which happens to also show the helmet "lock" hooks on the upper left and right.
Just hang your helmet's D-ring over either hook, replace the seat, and walk away!
Oh so that's how it's done. Do you think it is possible to secure a helmet over the pillion seat this way and ride with it if there's no passenger?
a bungee net might be better for that...you dont' want the helmet to bounce around...
Ok I see, thanks again for the explanations and the picture
Ive ridden all day with the helmet in the lock and never had any issues. except when my glove fell out of the helmet and melted to my muffler. But it doesnt bouce around.
gee, i never new my GS had a helmet lock. how many ppl use it? how safe do u think it is? i always carried a cable with a pad lock and ran it through the face shield opening and the passenger peg bracket... what a waste of time!
I ride with a helmet on the lock when I go to pick up a passenger. I've never had any issues. The bike is wider though so if you pass close to anything, like a wall, doorway, or garage, don't forget the helmet's there.
i use mine all the time, keep my daughter's halmet on there on the days I have to pick her up after work. It travels down the highway at 80+ just fine on it, no bounce or flapping.
Bumping this in case theres anyone that didn't know there was a helmet lock under the seat....like me.

I had no idea there was a helmet lock. I always just took mine in with me or hung it on the passenger peg hoping no one would steal it. Sure glad I found out about the lock, I'm gonna go test it out. Thanks for the info guys.
BTW: that wasn't sarcasm, if it sounded like it.
Well, that's something that SHOULD be on the wiki. I did a quick search and didn't see it there.
Nor did I know there was one. I've used the seat at a lock befor, just putting the d-ring next to the frame. I had no idea there was an integrated lock.
Color me happily informed.
Sooo, thats what that hooks for  I've only had the bike for 7 years
i use it all the time, make sure u put the chin pad under the D-ring so you dont scratch the paint :thumb:
i had heard people talk about this mysterious creature, now i know, cept someone must a cut mine off cause its not there :bs:
Surprisingly enough, this is the first thing I noticed after I took the seat off. I had to show my friend where his was on his SV-650S. Thank goodness for helmet locks. But be careful. I know of some people who've stolen helmets on bikes left too long outside. Just a word of caution. Otherwise, LOCK-on my fellow GS friends! :icon_twisted:
I checked my bike, there are none. It's an 89,and dgyver has pointed out some subtle differences in my bike compared to the mid 90's and later bikes.
REVISEDMine does have them, just bent down and painted over
I used my helmet lock tonight for the first time
You know those times when a solution to a problem was just staring you in the face for the longest time, and a few months later you finally realize it? Yeah, this is kinda like that... I think 'epiphany' is the word.
Seriously tho, thx guys! This makes life a hell of a lot easier when I'm making a stop at the store to buy something.
Hmmm...I knew I had those two helmet holders since the first day I had my GS, but after all I don't confide in them that much...I use them only in emergencies, when it would be really impractical to take my helmet with me and/or if I use my cheap jet helmet once in a while (just for a quick tour downtown...no flaming me plz! :icon_mrgreen:).
Other than that, I always take my Nolan with me, I'm getting used to this.
Even when I had a scooter I'd usually do it, since my lift-front type helmet wouldn't fit under the seat compartment.

The left side is welded on but the right side is bolted on and can be replaced. It bolts under the bracket for the electrics....unless something else is different on the 89. Should not be hard to add one.
So, how many of you read that little book that came with your bike? ;)
All will be revealed inside the little book! :icon_mrgreen:
i have to add my name to the list of those who did not know it had such a lock

i didnt get a book with my bike, that would've helped.
no book here
ha. glad i bumped the thread. :icon_mrgreen:
Haha, awesome. I was always wondering how all these people leave their helmets on their bikes. Doh!
I didn't know either.... I have read through the manual but not for a long time, and it's easy to overlook something like that. I can't believe it though, the wealth of knowledge on this forum and most of us didn't even know about that hook

You're right. I just added it to the wiki.

yup just like an old watch, you gotta crack it a few turns each ride :thumb:
I use my helmet locks all the time. And not just for my helmet. I took the metal ring off a keychain and attached it to the zipper-pull on the cuff of my mesh jacket. Now I can lock my jacket to my bike as well...(though I would only ever do this with a relatively inexpensive jacket)
All of this reminds me of watching a dealer salesman show a 17 year old kid how to ride his new Gixxer.
This is the brake...
This is the clutch...

^^^^^
A GSX-R under the @$$ of a 17-yr-old kid? :o
Arghhh!!!
:icon_mrgreen:
takes more time/energy to use it than to carry it around for me (I always keep a bungy-net on the rear portion of the seat, I would have to take it off, lift seat, slip helmet, close, retie net.. bleh...)
I've known about it since I bought the bike as well, even before I picked up the owner's manual for it. I use it every time I'm going to pick up a passenger, but I carry my helmet with me when I park it somewhere. Haven't ever had a problem with it messing up my paint/bouncing around either.

I haven't been doing that! I just noticed that my speedo is like 10% off, is it because I forgot to wind it? Can I fix it if I wind that knob for a couple hours to make up for all the days I forgot to?

only if some noob actually believes it   btw did you get my pm?
Not to disparage, but seriously, y'all didn't know this? I think you might all want to check the loose nut between the handlebars and the seat!
We don't crash our bikes often enough to get comfortable looking at weird twisted things on the frame and wondering if they were like that a day ago.

Good one.
I read my book, otherwise I may not have found it. I was used to looking on the outside of the bike!
Great to know it sounds ok with the helmet on the side being ok while riding. I am still nervous about doing that.
I keep a spare on there.. I just hang it on the left, so as to avoid the exhaust..
