Title: Pinlock anti fog really works
Post by: blue05twin on October 26, 2006, 02:23:36 PM
Got a new clear visor and pinlock anti vog insert and the thing really works,  installed it last night put my helmet on ran around my neiborhood breathing really hard, hmmm I must have looked like a nut .

Anyway it never fogged up.  And it was a bit chilly last night when I did this.  So if you have a problem with your visor fogging up get won't be disappointed with the pinlock insert.

I'm thinking about getting this, but it seems pretty dang spendy, 80 bucks. i only paid 60 for my blue mirrored lens. plus i don't like how it's always clear on the outsides.

So buy some cat crap or other spray on product. You'll either be happy with it, or you'll kick yourself for being cheap and wasting $20 on a product that doesn't work when you could have got one that DOES work for $80.

Or just switch to a Scorpion helmet. Their factory anti-fog is amazing. Never had mine fog EVER. My glasses used to fog though, before I switched to contacts.

$80? From where? I paid $55 for mine, after tax! And that was in August, when they'd just come out!

IIRC, Rain-x specifically says to never apply it to anything plastic or polycarbonate, as over time it will cause the plastic to yellow and become brittle... I dunno bout you, but I don't want a brittle visor. Just my $.02

Yea, I see your point but I have used it on my helmet for 2 years now and no problems.. I also have used it on my ski goggles that I have had for 10+ years and they are still fine  :thumb:

I found that when I used rain-x or fog-x on my visor it increased the amount of glare. Seeing as how half of my commute every day is into the sun...I can't handle that lol.

Really! On Scorpion's website they said msrp for 80 I believe so that is what I got it for at the dealer. (I belive it was 80, whatever the msrp is that is what I paid)

I finally got a chance to use my pinlock shield this morning on my way to work. It was working perfect untill i got to the top of the hill where it was a little foggy and the inside of the upper left corner got fogged up. I continued back down the other side of the hill and I even poped the shield up for a while and the fog never went away. I'm kinda dissapointed about that.

What causes the shields to fog up?  Temp differences?

Mine only fogs on really cold or really hot days, and even then it isn't an issue, I just raise it a crack and within seconds it is gone.

I notice it mainly if it is extremely hot out and I am sweating at the brow. If I crack the vents on my helmet it goes away.

It has never been a serious enough issue for me to drop $50-$80 on it.

So my question is why does it affect some people enough to spend the money? Should I worry about my helmet nto fitting correctly or something?

with my other visors, i would constantly have to open and close my shield, and it got every annoying and it would fog quickly unless i was going about 60 then it doesn't fog really.. during the day standard shields are usually ok and if it's in the summer during the day or night it's usually fine, but during cold mornings/days standard shields just suck.

If it is the temp differences that cause condensation, then does it really matter if you have a "standard" shield.

I think my helmets' venting system works very well, either that or the helmet isn't fitted correctly(which I think it is).

Take out the variable that some people have all the money in the world to blow and some are just suckers, and you should be left with a good reason to drop $50-$80 on this type of product.

ANy helmet regardless of design will fog if the temps are right and you are just sitting. ( I leave mine up until about 20-30MPH)
If the helmet has a good vent design, where does the need for anti-fog come from? poorly designed helmet vents?

I don't know where I am going with this, I am just bored at work. :dunno_white:

It does work and this is why.
They first clean it with the rain X type stuff. Then you put this on. The chemical is still trapped in there and there is no water to create fog. The inside of the thing now has the same temperature as the outside of the thing (cos its so thin it conducts heat well) so essentially there is a temp difference beweeen the thing and your face sheild but that area has anti fogging chemical and no moisture. RainX types work fine, but they get removed with air and what not. Here its trapped. I have a a different make on mine, and it will fog all around it but not in your field of vision.
Cool.
Srinath.

I'm telling you.. never had a stock scorpion helmet/visor fog up. Ever.

My scorp visors will fog if it's cold, raining, and I'm sitting at a light for more than 2 minutes...  Every time...    And if you open it at all when it's raining, it's over...  You get water on the inside of the visor and it fogs worse than ever.

The rain part is another good reason, for those of you who ride in the rain, it's great because you don't need to open your visor at a stop. Plus my face stays much warmer keeping the visor down. I also noticed that my left hand stayed much warmer on my grip (heated) because i didn't have to constantly use it to open and close the visor.
