Title: San Francisco Bay Area riders
Post by: banderaz on November 09, 2006, 02:25:38 PM
Anyone wants to hit Highway 9 => 35 => 84 => 1 to Santa Cruz on GS500's? 3-4 hour trip, lotsa beautiful views and fun roads.
Would be a fun trip for our little lawnmowers!

P.S. I ride at Enthusiastic pace, not extreme, but not slow either.

Gawh...I am so busy at work and I can't post during work hours, and I can't get a decent nights sleep, and because I can't sleep I can't feel good enough to work on my bike, so it still needs to have that darn base gasket and left-hand case cover gasket replaced and I'm coming up on 36,000 miles, which means I'll need to do a valve adjustment, oil change, and carb synch, and because I have to do all this work, means that I shouldn't go on any rides, because that would be like, unsafe, y'know, even though it's leaking oil, but the oil level hasn't changed in, like, three weeks, so all this of makes me so depressed.

I did get the new, used exhaust ready to put on the bike, though (stripped of rust), so I guess that's some progress.  <sigh>

Dude....time to adjust your priorities (and kick some @$$ that's causing you not to get enough sleep! ;) ).... Put your foot down and grab a weekend for yourself to do the work and take a ride!  :icon_twisted:

Bnaderaz - When you go down 1, stop in Davenport for a Whale City Burger, and then turn left up Bonnie Doon Rd.  You'll have a much more fun time than S.C.  Stick to your right at the top, and turn left to go to Felton (on Felton-Empire Grade/Rd.) to get to 9.

Pandy - Hopefully, this weekend I'll get her all done, may even have to take Monday off.

I'm in the same boat as scratch. My bike needs work, and I haven't gotten around to it. Between rain, the end of DST, no garage, and busy weekends, I'm almost to the point of saying screw it and taking it in to Hare.

Indeed!  Let's see, I have rear rotor replacement, front caliper rebuild, some oil leaks to resolve, and a strange noise to troubleshoot...

You can just go with Pandy.  She'll teach you all about low-speed manuevering and creative parking!

I'd love to, but my GS is not currently rideable either.
Neither is my new TL... still waiting for the rubber...
If Pandy really wants to hit parking lots, I've got an ex500 with -2 / +24 sprockets, it's everything, but street legal... Just gotta find a privately owned one with no authorities around.

Haven't been aboard neither of my toys for a week and I'm getting really depressed.

No worries; I hit parking lots just fine on my own.  :cookoo:

Oh..you meant to ride in parking lots?  :icon_lol:

Well....parking lots won't help much with my little....er...problems...they go much....MUCH.....deeper!

Everyone needs to get their bikes back up! Riding season is just starting here!  ;)

Wish I could, but my GS's are pretty much miscellanious parts now...

I'll pick one up this summer maybe, funnest bike I've ever had.

I caved, I'm taking it in to Hare. I'm going to the track over Thanksgiving weekend, so between work and college football, I wasn't getting anything done. So now I guess it's time to start planning the December BAGS and see who is really scared of the rain. ;)

wtf, is my GS the only one running in all of the bay area!?     :nono:

Though I do have to change the oil, replace a couple of light bulbs, and more importantly, do the darned valve adjustment and return Sanjay's shim tool already...

Sounds almost like we should have a wrenching party!

Mine's running...it's just leakin' back and forth to work.  Hopefully, it'll only have one day of downtime this weekend, I should have it up and running just in time for the rain Tuesday.

Nah, just high-level clouds; wont rain.  Looked like it was threatin' to drizzle earlier.

I'm getting the itchy-wrench hand.
Title: Re: San Francisco Bay Area riders
Post by: pandy on November 17, 2006, 12:21:42 PM
Well, I'd offer my SVS so you could scratch that itch (so to speak), but my better half has him in fine form....

Though you could always come over and adjust/clean my chain anytime you want, and if your oil-change hands ever get itchy...

And if you wanted to clean him from top to bottom....   (I'm such a lazy slob. :P )

Last time I went to Helimot's, Helmut came out to look at my bike after I lowered it (this is a couple of weeks ago, and I had it lowered a couple of months ago).

Helmut got a look on his face that I hate; it's a look that means there's something very, very wrong with my bike (he's VERY good at spotting nasty little problems quickly). Four bolts (the four that are located where the bolt is labeled #4 below) were....slightly loose....ok....three of them were ready to fall out and the fourth was slightly loose... ???

Helmut grabbed a socket set so that my better half could make the adjustment....yeesh.... the trouble I find!  :cookoo:

Do you need me to do a once-over on your bike?
Title: Re: San Francisco Bay Area riders
Post by: pandy on November 17, 2006, 01:18:14 PM
Actually, that would probably be a very good idea. I find every excuse in the book not to be there when it's time for my better half to teach me how to do that myself (I'm a rider (sort of), not a wrencher  :icon_lol:). Sooooo.....need to use our garage for something? Can I fix you dinner? When are you free?

:o  hey Scratch, when I replaced the gasket on the gs....took me like 4 hours  it was like 3hours 45 minutes of scraping the old gasket off... I don't know what they put it on there with but it wouldn't come off fer nuthin....I almost gave up...but it finally worked out

Scraping old gaskets has got to be the worst part of wrenching.  I've used gasket remover, but that has a tendency to damage the paint.

You have to use a brush to apply just enough gasket remover to the residual gasket and/or mating surface.  It works...you just have to be verwy, verwy careful.  :)

I'm still not done.  My shed does not have good ventilation.  Or, heating.

Almost done cleaning, just have one piston and the crankcase left to clean.  Tomorrow will be assembly!

I'd only heard of/checked out BARF, but it pisses me off most of the time - there are a bunch of drama queens behaving like angry teenagers on there.  :icon_rolleyes:
Title: Re: San Francisco Bay Area riders

Yeah, I rarely go to BARF anymore.

I think the average age (and definitely the maturity level) is higher on SBR (and it's a more-diverse board than BARF). SBR has its share of drama/fights, but it tends to be on a more-adult level (usually ). They do talk a LOT about politics and off-topic stuff, but it doesn't *generally* turn into a hate-fest, and folks are good about agreeing to disagree, as well as at kissing and making up . It's definitely a social board, and rides of all levels are usually going on weekly...just watch out for the budbandit rides...  :o

Turtle usually organizes some good n00b rides on SBR (they've gotten huge since I went on a couple, though).

Route just posted:

This will be an awesome time. Music ,food, stunt show, and great prizes. The one thing missing is the ride details.
The route will be
Meeting at Santa Clara Cycle Accesories at 9 am

Heading up 9
Right on 35
Gathering up at Alice(just to make sure everyone is still smiling)
Taking 84 toward Pescadero
Pescadero toward the coast
Then Highway 1 North
Meeting up with 84 and heading up toward Alice.
Meet up at Alice
so we all can head over to Santa Clara Cycle Accessories for some good food music and the stunt show

Yeah, but my wife would just take whatever t-shirt she wanted out of my drawers...not even ask.

Bike is up and running, I did have to use my old, scratched up exhaust as the better looking one was too long and wouldn't mate up at both the head and the hanger.

Break-in is painfully slow with only a 5-mile commute.  Doc Wong ride (free) this weekend.  It's on B.A.R.F.  I'm trying to go (wife is being objectional).  And, yes, it's going to rain! (Yay, better riding! (seriously!))

Doing some shopping should help cut down the break-in time.

May be ordering '88 GSXR750 fork springs ($48 from Santa Clara Cycle Accessories; .745kg/mm (.594kg/mm is stock)) soon.

Post by: pandy on December 14, 2006, 05:45:31 PM
Sooooo.... I was riding home last Friday night. I was on the 101 going South toward home at about 5:30PM... I was in 5th or 6th hauling on the freeway, but traffic was slowing down as I was almost to Embaradero. I reached with my left foot to shift, and  :o :o :o there was nothing there.....again... ??? Yup, my shifter had fallen again, and it couldn't get up....so I was stranded in the middle of the freeway (I'd been in the diamond lane). Even lock-tight didn't hold that baby.

So my better half and his son prepared to come rescue me. The skies were threatening, but heck, I'm tough! I ride in the rain! BUT...I hadn't planned on breaking down in the rain.   :cookoo: Fortunately, the rain was holding off......so....there I was....in the middle of the freeway...far from home....it was going to be a while before my rescue team arrived. After about 20-30 minutes, one of the Guardian Angels of the freeways (we have roaming tow trucks that help motorists out...some of the best tax money we spend!) showed up. We scratched our heads a bit, and then he shut down the freeway so that I could duck-walk my bike to the right-hand side of the freeway. His tow truck was HUGE! It seemed to block the whole freeway for me!

So then I'm on the right-hand side of the freeway, and my guardian angel didn't want to leave me alone there. After seeing how long it would be before my rescue team arrived, that dear, sweet angel pushed my bike (the tow trucks aren't set up for motorcycles) back to the previous exit and all the way up the offramp to the safety of a gas station.  :kiss3: :kiss3: :kiss3: He barely broke a sweat as I was practically running along beside him carrying just my helmet and ready to fall over dead!

So my angel went to help another poor soul, and my rescue crew arrived. My better half's son fixed the shifter and then geared up to ride my SVS home for me. Big Red made almost nary a peep. His battery had run down running the hazard lights.

Soooooo..... into the back of the truck he went, and home we went...finally....at about 8:30PM or 9:00PM.

I'm sure glad I took my bike that day to beat the traffic!

So..I've grounded myself from commuting on Big Red during the work week until I've thoroughly checked all things that can come loose...ok, I have to learn to first, but I'm going to! I'm thinking about attending the Doc Wong clinic tomorrow night. Anyone else going? :P

That was my exciting Friday night last week.

I <3 my rescue team.  :kiss3: :kiss3:

Glad you were rescued and are allright.

Wow, quite an ordeal eh Pandy!?    :o

I'm surprised that even loc-tite didn't keep your shifter on, doesn't the one on the SV have a notch on the shaft like the GS that keeps it from sliding out?  Either way, you must be an extreme shifter!

Glad you got rescued and everything went well.  :thumb:

Yeah, it was more excitement than *I* needed on a Friday night!  :cookoo:

The rod held the shifter on the bike, so it didn't fall completely off....it just hung there limply...   I don't consider myself an extreme anything on the bike....well, maybe an extreme granny.  :flipoff:  I never lost my GS shifter. The SVS shifter isn't held on by much. I think red loc-tite was used last time....we're gonna try the blue this time (or maybe it was blue last time, and we're gonna try the red).

I knew you weren't far away, scratch, but I also know you're a busy boy....and.....I didn't have your number on me..... maybe I'll program it into my cell.... ;)

So after it being ungodly cold yesterday, the weather was much nicer by me today. I was going to see some friends who live up off of Summit, so I figured I would head up 9 and make my way over there eventually. Needless to say, I was in for a bit of surprise when I get up to four corners and see snow! I crossed over skyline to pick up summit from bear creek, and there was snow the whole way between four corners and skyline/black road. I froze my balls off, but made it eventually. I guess I'm gonna have to stick to Shannon and the other roads down here if it's going to be that bad up in the mountains.

Dude, it's friggin freezing! I saw the weather reports and laughed at all the people on BARF complaining about having to drain their coolant. Then I remembered that I'm babysitting a Ninja 250. Having no garage sucks, especially when you are trying to drain coolant, working a bike you don't know, freezing your butt off outside, and working with only a flashlight to guide you.

I thought the idea was to mix ANTI-FREEZE with the water :dunno_white: :cookoo:

You might run water wetter on the track, but it's not needed on the street.

Yeah, normally it's got antifreeze in there, but we went to the track over Thanksgiving weekend, so it's had water wetter in there since then.

Uhh, carefully and painfully. At first I thought something was wrong with my bike, but then I realized the road is just horrible. When there is sufficient sunlight and dry road, I avoid 85 pretty much altogether. I head up 9 from Saratoga and use some backroads to cut over past Stevens Creek reservoir. It's a little bit longer, but a "commute" of twisties is hard to beat.

As posted on BayAreaRidersForum.com in Doc Wong's Corner

Next Doc Wong Riding Clinic - April 15, Sunday!!

You're invited to:

Doc Wong Riding Clinic "Smooth Riding  - Handle Bar Pressure" Sunday 8am-3pm

When: Sunday April 15th, 2007!  8am-3pm
Where: Starts at my office, then a 110 mile ride thru the Skyline  hills!
Active Life Medical Center (Chiropractic and Alternative Care)
1391  Woodside Road, Suite 200
Redwood City,  CA 94061
How to register: just e-mail me at: docwong@docwong.com
Cost:  $0.00

I think you'll like this!

As always, there will also be a discussion about:

1.  Riding Within Your Abilities
2.  Doc Wong's Smooth Street Riding Technique
3.  Public Relations

The following description was provided by Michael Nelson
nelson@seahunt.imat.com

Several folks have expressed their interest in attending, but what we need
for you to do now is to CONFIRM via E-mail or telephone to Dr. Wong's office
in Redwood City if you're planning on attending.

The phone number at the office is 1-650-365-7775.
The clinic will meet at (of all places) a clinic...  ;-)

We'll meet at 8AM at: Active Life Medical and Chiropractic Center
1391 Woodside Road,
Suite 200
Redwood City, CA  94061

Please be gassed up and ready for a three hour ride after the one hour seminar.  We won't be stopping for a snack until about 10 am, so if you get hungry before that time of the day either bring a snack with you or eat  before you arrive.

You can gas up before the clinic at any of the numerous gas stations on Woodside Road where the clinic is.

Dr. Harry Wong, a prominent Redwood City chiropractor and extremely knowledgeable  sport rider, has started a monthly series of Motorcycle Riding Clinics.  These seminars are FREE, and consist of a one hour lecture followed by a three hour group ride in the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains.

PURPOSE: Enhance your riding skills, increase your enjoyment, and learn better riding survival reflexes.

COST: FREE

TYPE OF MOTORCYCLE:  If it has 2 wheels and a motor, you're invited.

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED: Since these are not fast sport rides, any reasonably competent rider should be able to participate.  We recommend that you be comfortable with your bike and knowledgeable about your (and your bike's) limitations and capabilities.   If you have been riding for at least six months you've probably got the minimum level of expertise required.  The bottom line is that if you can safely negotiate the mountainous roads off Skyline Blvd, then you do have the minimum skills for the ride.

EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: A motorcycle in good mechanical condition, helmet, gloves, heavy jacket (leather or heavy material), heavy pants, boots... in other words, sensible riding attire.  If you show up in shorts, tank top, Oakley blades and flipflops on your feet, you _may_be invited  to go home.  You must also have a valid motorcycle license and  insurance.  Full leathers are encouraged.

RIDING LOCATION: Any and all backroads off Skyline Blvd, along thecoast, Highway 9, etc.

HOW TO  REGISTER: E-mail Dr. Wong at DOCWONG@AOL.Com or call (650) 365-7775.

TIMES: Sunday mornings, 8:00AM to 9:00AM for the workshop with approximately
4 hours riding afterwards.  Lunch in Davenport at 12noon.  We're usually done at 2:30pm with a short talk on Skyline Blvd (Hwy 35) and Hwy 9.

WHO: Dr. Harry Wong, with guest ride leaders, and who knows?

WORKSHOP FORMAT: The one hour talk will cover one major topic.  Then when we ride, we ride with the emphasis of applying the principles of that one topic.

We split the riders into groups of around 10 riders each, according to what YOU think your riding skill level is.  The first group will generally ride at a faster pace and the last group riding at the slowest pace.

You can ride at a slower pace, you don't need to feel like you have to keep up with the riders in front of you.

We'll have volunteer ride leaders leading you on the route thru the hills.
Those riders will be designated to you prior to beginning the ride.  As volunteer riders, they are often very willing to help you in any way they can.  So feel free to ask them questions on riding, the route, etc.

It's important to approach this whole thing with the right attitude.

If one of the volunteer ride leaders talks to you, it's meant to be constructive criticism and should be taken that way.  After all, the purpose of the Clinics is to improve your skills.

We try to ride at a moderate pace, and we hold the speed down on the straights to allow slower riders to catch up.  We stop at any intersection where we're turning off to another road and we don't continue until everyone has arrived.

We'll try to make rest stops long enough so that the slower riders will get a rest, too.

TOPICS: (one topic per month)

o  "Cornering Confidence - Judging Entrance Speed"
o  "Cornering Confidence - The Steering Input"
o  "Smooth Riding - Throttle Control"
o  "Cornering Confidence - Lines of Travel (1-2 Turn Method)"
o  "Smooth Riding -  Handle bar pressure"
o  "Cornering Confidence - Pivot Steering"
o  "Smooth Riding - Body English-Weight Transfer"
o  "Cornering Confidence -  Stable Body Position and Anchor Points"
o  "Smooth Riding - Awareness and Vision"
o  "Cornering Confidence - Road Surfaces and Curve Configurations"
o  "Cornering Confidence - Wet Weather Riding and Loose Conditions"

RIDE ROUTE:
We start at Dr. Wong's office on Woodside Road in Redwood City.  We go up Woodside Road, through Woodside, and turn right on King's Mountain Road.  We go up King's Mountain Road to Skyline and stop there for a short break.  This is the first opportunity  for our volunteer leaders to give any tips to the riders they've observed.

>From there, we head down Tunitas Creek Road (described by my late friend Brett as "a goddamned GOAT TRAIL!") ;-).  We follow Tunitas Creek Road all the way down to
Highway 1, where we take a short jaunt down 1 to Stage Road.  Left on Stage road to San Gregorio's little General Store, where we take another short break.

>From San Gregorio, we go south on Stage Road to the little town of Pescadero (which is a veritable METROPOLIS compared to San Gregorio and has gas).  Another short break at Pescadero, and then we head east on Pescadero Road a short ways to Cloverdale Road, where we turn south (right) again.  We follow Cloverdale road down to Gazos Creek Road, where we turn west (right).

We follow Gazos Creek Road to Highway 1 (where there is gas, and  then take a trip down 1 to Davenport, where we stop for lunch.  After lunch, it's south on Highway 1 again to Bonny Doone Road, where we turn east (left).  Don't turn right there, or you'll be surprised at the lack of floatation a set of leathers provides.  ;-)

Up Bonny Doon Road to Smith Grade, right on Smith Grade to Empire Grade.  North (left) on Empire Grade to Jamison Creek Road, down Jamison Creek Road to Highway 236.   Right on Highway 236 to Highway 9 in Boulder Creek.  Another short break in Boulder Creek (gas, if needed), then up Highway 9 (east) to Skyline, where we
assemble at the little rest area there for a final meeting.  After our meeting and bull session, the group breaks up and everyone is on their own.  Hope you can find your way home from there!

Actually, I try to be conscious of stuff like that, so I'm ashamed that I didn't even think about the copyright issue. Thanks for helping me continue to walk the straight and narrow, scratch.  :kiss3:

I'll be doing penance this Sunday at about 3:00PM when my butt will be so sore I can barely get off my bike after Doc Wong's most awesome ride!

If I'm behind you, I'd better see you get up out of the seat when we go down Tunitas Creek ("goat trail") Road.

There's little chance that you'll be behind me in the Z-pace group, but I'll soak up any advice ya' have from now 'til then!  Gettin' my boo-tay off the seat is definitely something I need to remember to do... Now if I just felt comfortable sliding it over in the twisties....  :icon_twisted:

Well, it looks as though I won't be home in time to ride tomorrow. I went out of town yesterday, and I was supposed to be home today...but I'm not....  But I'm still having fun!  So have a safe ride, and I'll see y'all on the next ride! :thumb:

I'm sick, so I didn't go    Two of my friends did, and rode in Scratch's group.  The yellow 599 and the white/red CBR that went in a ditch.  Luckily the latter's rider is ok, and the bike damage wasn't TOO bad.

Anyway, I'll hopefully be able to make the next one.

Yikes.... a get-off in scratch's group and Doc Wong got rearended by a hit-and-run driver after the ride was over...  :o

It's a common place that people go down in, so I hear.  It's a tight, decreasing-radius right hand turn with a tree right at the edge on the inside of the turn, it kinda blocks the view of the road; no bumps from the roots.  I never topped 30mph.

The guy on the yellow 599 did great!  :thumb:  As did the CBR rider, he finished the ride!  :thumb:

Gosh, I hope Doc is allright!

Glad to hear the rider was able to finish!  :thumb:

Doc Wong wasn't badly hurt (it sounded as though he was bruised?), but he's hoppin' mad (and rightly so)!

Yeah he told me about the turn - sounded nasty.  He was ok though, and finished the ride, like you said.  He was just really bummed about the tank damage.

The 599 guy, who's the cockiest guy I have ever met, and never passes up an opportunity to ask me when I'm getting a bike faster than his car, said that "the skinny dude on the purple bike" was pretty impressive.

So I had to go to Monterey yesterday and decided to ride down Hwy 17 to Hwy 1.  Never again, some crazy people on 17   :o .  On the way back I took 152 from Watsonville just to check it out.  It's meh....  Next time I will just go up 9 or Bonny Doone.

I like Watsonville Road....it's nice on a hot day, because there's nice shade along the way!  :icon_mrgreen:
