Introducing the new world champion in high performance headlamp upgrades. Philips X-treme Power bulbs deliver up to an astounding 80% more light than standard halogens, yet they're DOT legal and come with the same quality and performance we put into the lighting we sell to OEMs around the world. X-treme Power is a new "must-have" for tuners and high performance drivers.
Philips have released a globe in Europe that they claim is the brightest H4 replacement available.
It draws stock wattage 60/55W and is made from Quartz glass to prevent the plastic in the headlight lens from deteriorating from UV rays.
I currently use Philips Vision Plus 50+ and think they are a great upgrade over the stock globes. These are classified as an 80+ so I am tempted to give them a go. I am paranoid about ensuring I have the best visibility I can for night riding so though slightly expensive, what value do you put on your safety. I'd rather see a probelm ahaead 10 meters sooner than later.
Ebay has them for 29 pounds for a set of 2.

Anyone have or use these bulbs atm?

Here's what Auto Express had to say about Xtreme Power:
This is so new, we could not randomly select test samples, so can't include it in our assessment. Yet performance of our pre production unit was staggering. Even compared with the current benchmark Plus per cent bulbs, the difference was immediate and dramatic. Philips claim an 80 per cent improvement over standard units, but we think that this is conservative.
The results have been achieved in the same way as the 30 and 50 per cent lamps-by taking the allowed tolerances right to the edge. This time though as well as reducing the filament and burning it hotter, Philips has shrunk the glass casing.
As a result, the gas pressure can be increased for better light output.Engineers have also optimised the geometry and shield position to focus the light where it is needed.
AutoExpress also gave this product "Accessory of the Year for 2007" so I assume it must be good.
Quote
Accessory of the year: Philips X-treme Power
All the electronic safety wizardry on today's cars will not help if you can't see the road ahead – which is why Philips' X-treme Power takes our top accessory prize, as it sets a new benchmark for headlamp bulbs. When we tested it alongside both standard and high-performance bulbs, it put them all, literally, in the shade. Based on the light 75 and 50 metres ahead of the driver, the best beam rating the rest could manage was 107, but the new X-treme hit 146 – a massive difference easily seen on the light-tunnel wall. As with all high-performance bulbs, Philips has taken the tolerances allowed by the regulations and pushed them to the limit, not only burning the filament harder, but also reducing the glass envelope to increase gas pressure and deliver more light. A brilliant road safety improvement.
So I bit the bullet and have ordered a set :correct:
Would these fit an E?
I think all GS's use H4 globes :dunno_white:
Awesome, when you get them in give us a writeup please? I hate the high beam with the standard globes, I feel like I can't see the road ten feet ahead of me.
With the dual buells I can set the high/low in the center and get both :thumb:
I can almost see though walls :icon_mrgreen:
On the 2004+ GS, if you have press and hold the "Flash" button you get both lights lighting up (high and low beam) but that's a total of 115 watts through your wiring harness. This may cause some heat related issues.
I am currently running the sylvania siverstar and love it. But mine is on a E. I would like to see how well these compare. Get some pics up.

That's only on eurospec bikes.. here in the good ol US, you don't get a flash button unless you move up to an SV, or Gixxer, etc
I'm not trying to take over this thread, but would these work on a GS?

And why is the smaller marker light on the front of my F always burnt out???

Yup. Can't trust us with things like that. Or an "off" switch.

+1, the SilverStars are a great improvement... but I'll be watching this closely.
Yep those Motovision lights come in H4 so yes they'll work on the GS. They are basically Vision Plus 50's with an orange section in the globe to give the light reflectors an orange look. The Vision Plus 50 actually light the road up further with white light however.
As for these new globes, they sound promising... any idea's on how I can photograph stock, vision 50+ and these X-treme 80+ globes for comparison?
park 30-40 feet away from a brick wall, turn the flash of on the camera and take a picture. When the right distance is chosen you should be able to see the differences in output in the picture using the brick as a reference.
With the camera set on a fixed shutter speed and aperature setting.
Ok. I'll see what I can do when they arrive. :thumb:
Ok, it's raining atm so I can't test the lights but here's a picture comparing the three Philips H4 12V 60/55W globes.
From left to right is X-treme Power 80%, Vision Plus 50% and the stock globe.
As you can see the upgraded bulbs are narrower, which allows more light to be reflected forward. The smaller globe also means higher pressure gas so the lights burn brighter.
The upgraded globes also have a small amount of blue tint on the top edge of the high beam element. When using high beam, this edge of blue light helps to better illuminate road signs and reflectors.
galahs,
It's stopped raining... What's your verdict?
BTW, what suburb?
Funny you should ask, I just came inside after doing some thorough tests.
I have to say this is the 2ND BEST upgrade I have done to my bike behind upgrading my front springs!!! :icon_mrgreen:
I can see!!!
It actually feels like I have car head lights.
The light is more white, spreads longer and wider than the stock globes and illuminates the area in-between better than the Philips Vision Plus 50s.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending these to every GS'er.
I will be getting a set for my car. 8)
I'll post some pics I too.
P.S. I live in Camden
Now this is a series of pictures with a camera over-ridden to manual settings, on a tripod. These pictures have just been re-sized not modified further in any way.
I parked my bike on its centre stand 15 meters and at 90 degrees from a garage door. The only thing I changed between photos were the globes. All globes were brand new and no other adjustments were made.
OK here are the bulbs on normal beam from top to bottom :
Top = Stock
Middle = Philips Vision Plus 50
Bottom = Philips X-treme Power 80
Next I will post the High Beam lights.
Here are the bulbs on HIGH Beam from top to bottom :
Top = Stock
Middle = Philips Vision Plus 50
Bottom = Philips X-treme Power 80
Those pictures don't seem to show the benefits of the lights as well as you can see the difference on the road. I guess you need to be a further away from the wall to see the benefits.
The real benefit I find with the X-treme 80's is the improvement in low beam. Its superb!!! I can now actually ride with low beam on at 80km/h and see clear and far enough ahead to feel confident. I couldn't do that on the stock bulbs.
Low beam was so bad with the stock globes that I found I HAD to ride every where with HIGH beam on just so I could see.
The Vision Plus 50's were an improvement over the stockers on both low and high beam, BUT the low beam was still less than desirable.
The improvement on high beam of the 80's in comparison to the 50's however was less noticable. The 50s seemed to have decent high beam globe performance. The 50's and 80's have a whiter light and slightly longer beam over the stock globes, but I didn't really notice any major improvement of the 80s over the 50s. Maybe if I did a test over a longer distance I could actually quantify if there is an improvement or not.
Anyway, I'm still smiling from ear to ear :icon_mrgreen:
Did I mention I can now see on low beam!!!
Again I'd highly recommend the Philips X-treme Power globes to anyone who rides their GS at night.
Don't forget they are standard wattage so no burnt out wiring looms and they are very easy to put in on a GS500F. With the ignition switched off just:
- Disconnect the wiring loom from the main globe by pulling it straight off
- Remove the rubber cap that's over the bulb. Its just a snug fit. Pulls straight off.
- Unhook the retaining clip
- The bulb will come loose
- Replace the globe, do not touch the glass of the bulb with your skin! If you do, wipe it with a clean, lint free cloth with some methylated spirits.
- Hook on the retaining clip
- Push the rubber cap back on. Make sure it fits snugly on all the way round.
- Slide the wiring loom back on
and you're done!!!
Also, remember the importance of a properly adjusted headlight. Adjust the beam so that it is shining high enough to see forward, but not too high that it will blind on-coming traffic.
galahs,
Agree, the photos do not show any real difference. Thank-you for doing the tests.
Your own opinion seems to be quite positive.
Now, what's the difference in price?
Do the boxes indicate any difference in life expectancy?
The stock H4 Philips globe costs about $18 for 2
The H4 Philips Vision Plus 50s cost about $30 for 2
The H4 Philips X-treme Power 80s cost about $50 for 2
I would expect a shorter life out of the 50s and 80s as the filament burns hotter. The package doesn't say anything on them about life but I read some where that their life span will be a little bit less than stock globes but nothing you'd notice. Time will tell I guess :dunno_white:
Galahs, thanks so much for taking the time to write about these bulbs. I might just have to buy a set and try them out now!
Whoa, are these even available in the US? I can only find links to UK sales... :icon_confused:
Yep, they're not available in Australia yet either. I got mine from the UK on E-bay :thumb:
I read they will be available in the USA by the end of July.
Driving today during a bright afternoon I got a smile on my face when I noticed that with my lights on low beam, any reflector I approached lit up. Love these lights!!! :thumb:
My company does a lot of business with Philips.. I'll have to see if I can request some "samples" :thumb:
If you can... get some!!! :thumb:
Got some on the way mate. I remembered your post after a flatbed tried to run me off the road coming down North Rocks Rd tonight. Bastard. People will choose to move out of the way now, especially if I angle the headlight just so... :flipoff:

nice i will look into those
The website is www.SonicSprings.com they have a weight calculator.
Add your weight and it will tell you the appropriate rate springs to get.
What ever they suggest I'd go up one more size to compensate for when you double someone or are carrying a load.
I would also recommend no one go less that 0.80kg/mm. Its just too soft!
i got these bulbs on my zxr streetfighter. what a difference.
i couldnt see a thing at night before with the stock bulbs.
but these are great.

On the Philips X-treme Power Headlights, I can't seem to find them anywhere. I'm guessing they are a UK only item. :(
The Philips Xtreme-power globes are not available in Australia yet either. I got them from the UK through E-bay.
Cost me about $70 Australian.
yep, found them on UK eBay just as galahs said and ordered them last Thursday.
Ohhh, it looks like the US is getting them.
They are now listed on the Philips US Website:

Yeah i wouldn't mind I need some new bulbs anyways. I might need to wait til friday. to get them, or possibly the beginning of next month.

Maybe a new "Phillips X-treme Power Headlight Group Buy" thread should be started to gauge interest form others.

yeah I agree. probably in the buy trade sell forum
got mine in this week and installed yesterday, and after a good test lastnight, I have to agree with galahs, this is a great mod.
the light is much "whiter" and fuller than the standard bulb, and coming down the Great Western Highway, I could see street signs reflecting light from maybe 200m away.
I had to replace my Philips Xtreme Headlight after it blew on me. Man, going back to a stock bulb was horrible!!!
The difference was like night and day.
Ok stupid question alert
I'm going to get a set of these for my GS but looking on ebay there are ones for cars, bikes etc... Is there any bloody difference?
I looked on the Philips website and that got even more confusion. I must have taken a dumb@rse pill today I swear. :cookoo:

Pretty sure the replacement bulbs need to be H4 12V 60/55W globes. As long as they have this on them you are all good. Doesn't matter if it is for cars or bikes.
Hey Guys
I just found these, they're H4 X-Treme Vision 100%. They're selling for the same price as the XTreme Power but not really sure what the difference is. X-Treme power claims that they give an extra 25m vision whereas XTreme Vision say 35m plus a Vision pack gives you two Blue White Parking bulbs.
Anyone tried out the Visions? The specs all suit the GS, 12v 60/55w etc... Just don't really know which ones to go for I suppose. :dunno_black:

Wouldn't you be better off trying to buy a single globe or do they not come individually as you will only need one? You won't need the parking light as your bike is an Aussie GS and does not have the park option.
Unfortunately they only come in pairs. But fortunately my partner just got a bike too which uses H4 bulbs so we'll be replacing his as well. :thumb:
Isn't the park light the one under the headlight? There are two bulbs in my light casing.

On the USA and Euro model GS' the ignition has a park option so you can leave the park light on in the headlight, Aussie models don't have this.

think its mistaken models .. Dunno about the E type but my F type k6 in aussie has the park bulb too .. Bottom of main lens .. Just always on with rest of lights .. The SWITCH to select park or main however does not exist anymore cos of the hardwired lights law thingy.. Keen to get my fairing back on actually .. Bug splats can sting .. Even though kevlar jeans!

Lmao .. Yeah ok fair enough .. You try copping a cicada on a knee scar at 135k tho .. Im old and fragile and not made out of super ball rubber anymore .. Hence my love of atgatt .. Not have leather suit or pants yet .. Just kevlar lined jeans ..
But do you know where i can pick up a case of that stuff? Lol
Um, try getting hit in the throat by a rock at 120km thrown up by a Busa zipping by at, I don't know, 160-ish. Ir a rock in the end of the finger under the same conditions. Bugs are nothing. I hit a bird in the shoulder at 100-ish once. Bugs pale in comparison.
I'll send you some cement sachets so you can add them to your morning coffee. Will that do? :icon_mrgreen:

@Galahs, so how long did you have the Philips bulb? How long it lasted?
I just ordered one on eBay from UK.
My classes end at night this semester and I will need some extra light. Thanks for your comparison photos and opinion.

umm .. Mister .. Cant do cement sachets .. Dentist made me swear off them .. May try chewing on some rusty nails tho so who knows
on the lights issue i did have a pair of Phillips plus 80's in my twin lights .. Till last night ride when 1 blew .. Had to replace it with a standard unit .. Can see the difference really easy with the side by side setup .. Will use the remaining 80 in the fairing when it goes back on .. Till that one goes too and it will be a plus 100 or a 4500k 'fatboy' unit from my local 4wd shop .. They sell some interesting high output globes as the offroad crew like to go extreme everything .. Have used some b4 in a set of long range driving lights and they do work well
