+1 to the FREE AVG!  :thumb: It is better than Norton  :thumb: And no anoying constant questions like Macafee

3 must haves on your computer (all are free)

AVG, Spybot S&D, Adaware by Lavasoft

You should run NO other spyware or adware software than listed above  :thumb:

The immunize feature blocks known spy/adware.. from ever getting in your system. The (check for problems) is the main process to actually remove spy/adware

You need to>:

(1) Check for Updates
(2) Immunize... For some reason you have to do it twice.. You will see the Immunized and available to immunize  :thumb:
(3) The main thing... You need to use (CHECK FOR PROBLEMS) once it runs.. it will find problems, check the boxes then remove them  :thumb:

If you need any help feel free to PM  :thumb:

Viruses aren't really your main concern- Spyware will kill your computer
First get Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/?from=getfirefox)!!
2nd get Adaware from lavasoft (http://lavasoft.de/)
3rd get spybot search and destroy  (http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html) :icon_twisted:
4th get spyblaster (http://javacoolsoftware.com/) - basically spybot immunization on steroids
and 5th get yourself a virus scanner listed above.
All free and will keep your comp safer. Also, Mess around with spybot there are some hidden features that will help also like the startup list and immunization.

Linux or a Mac - either way you're running as a normal user and not an administrator so you don't have to worry about viruses as much.

Ubuntu is a great operating system - repositories are amazing, it's built on the stable Debian core, and hardware support is outstanding.  Just about the only problem is Windows software.  Any games or graphics-intensive applications won't really work well.  But Wine can run a lot of the simpler applications like Microsoft Office or most tax programs.  Think about installing Ubuntu sometime - it's very friendly for new users.  And everything you install from repositories is completely free.  I can't imagine paying $300 for a piece of professional software any more when there is open source software out there that can do 90% of the same things for free.

i have been using the AVG Anti-Virus but the trial version has expired and i cannot find the download from free link.  does anyone have it or a comparable anti Virus/spyware link that is free and not just a limited time trial version?  thanks all.  oh BTW i only have 128 of ram so i need one that is not too big of a ram hog.

thanks all

Did you uninstall the trial-version AVG before trying to install the completely free version (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/downloads?prd=aff)? If not, give it a try.

Also, if you know how to install memory in your laptop, I can see what I have at our shop, and I might be able to send you a free memory upgrade. If you're interested, send me the make & model # of your laptop, and what the current configuration is (is it just 1x128MB stick, or is it 2X64mb sticks?). If you're not sure how to check, then send me your phone #, and I'll talk you through checking the configuration (and I can probably talk you through installing new memory, too).

Let me know!  :kiss3:

you guys are way too nice to me, i get teary eyed when this happens and i think of how much you guys help me.  not just with stuff, like my lap top.  but advise, kind words, moral support and just being there for me.  this board and the members are my #1 support system.  may sound funny or even pathetic but it is true.  oh i don't know how to install a stick but i am sure i can find someone who can.   my laptop is a Dell Latitude- C640  Model PP01L - with
intel pent 4 mobile 1.80ghz
win xp pro with service pac 2
128 ram- i could not find out more than just 128 ram
40g membory
serial number is 76487-640-1361604-2367

i will try uninstalling the avg and using your link

THANKS A BUNCH

Just remember we love you. It's not in the least bit funny or pathetic. We're a family (dysfunctional at times, but hey...that's normal! )  :kiss3:

That laptop has 2 slots and will hold 1GB of memory. I know where I can get that, so if you want to PM me your address, I'll send out 2 512MB sticks on Monday. Putting in memory isn't difficult at all, so we shouldn't have a problem at all doing the upgrade over the phone if you don't have someone close by to help. You'd likely just need a small Phillips head screwdriver.  :thumb:

well, that, and the fact that there aren't any virii currently for linux or mac os. ok ok, there were a couple, but that was a loooooong time ago, and doesn't even require mentioning really.

before i start preaching about the advantages of using any OS other than a microsoft product, lemmie just say I spent exactly zero minutes in the last 2 1/2 years on virus/malware/spyware/anything maintenance on either the linux box or the mac laptop. that means any virus attached to an email doesn't matter, nor do malicious websites, spam, or anything that windows users phear.

ok, yes, i'm an open source zealot too.

yay !

from back in my dark dark windows days, zone alarm + AVG + firefox + adblock = the goodness. oh, and disk images of a FRESH SP2 install for those 'oopsie' days. ;)

Seriously, everyone should look into dual-booting a version of Linux.  I recommend Ubuntu, but others like gOS are also good, I've heard.  The reason for dual-booting is so you can do most of your work on Linux but keep Windows around for those stubborn applications that you still need access to but have no Linux equivalent.

Don't think you're not computer-savvy enough to do it until you've tried.  There's a lot of help out there to get you started, although the best help is an experienced friend sitting at your computer to fix things if necessary.
