So im sposta pick it up thursday. Has anyone ever owned one? Its a 88. As soon as i get it home ill take and post up some pics for everyone to see. Its going to be a tune up and paint job.
Not sure why i put this in its part can someone move this to odds and ends please.
That's a cool little bike, should be a fun bike for her to learn on. And a fun project for you. Keep us updated
so after looking at some specs on this bike its sitting at 11:1 compression and 45 hp stock
I'm pretty sure it makes 25-27 hp at the wheel stock and around 30-32 with air filter and pipe. I think the numbers you saw are for the new for 2009 model, but I might be wrong. I considered one of these but ended up on a ninja 250 instead. Darn cool little machine, though.
no heres the specs on the 1988 VTR unless they are wrong.

not trying to start an arguement or anything, just saying...
thanks for the info. i have a member over at the VTR250 forum but unlike here there isnt much action there. wifes really starting to get excited about picking up the bike on thursday and want to get right into stripping it down and painting it......i told her she gets to sand it and ill paint it. we are going flat black with some pink honda stickers and pink VTR stickers in stock locations. :thumb: I will post pics when we get it home and more as I/we fix it up and get it all painted up.
sounds like alot of fun. My wife will only ride on the back of my busa and even though she's done a few thousand miles that way she doesn't want her own bike. She won't consider riding the GS either. That makes you one lucky guy!!! I'm excited to see the photos as it goes along.
If my wife ever decides she wants her own bike, i'm painting it like this!!!

lol....nice bike. i cant wait to get it home and start ripping it apart. i put most of the gs back together today and we are getting the tires mounted this weekend on the gs so i can finish it up then start rippin, sanding and paints will start on hers. she actually bought my gs for me and she bought her dr125 last fall for herself to learn how to ride and then we found this so we are picking it up thursday. I think im more excited to see how excited she is its like when i got my first bike all over again. :D

worst part is thats factory colors....lol
lol, that's great. I bet that will be a cool looking naked bike after you fix it up.
Nothin better than a naked bike Eh?
i have nothing to say, other than I thought your title said "VTR250 for project wife"
until I put my glasses on...
then I was disappointed... :D
So after a flat tire on the first trailor i borrowed 8 hours of driving a white-out snow squall and a tin of chew We got the wifes bike home and in the house. To my suprize this bike runs like a top. It has 12k miles on it. Its rough but nothing a little sanding and paint wont take care of. Here are some pics of the bike. This bike was born 12/87 #418 off the line.

Looks like another fun project!
i have a bunch more pics to load but im goin to wait for the tank to be done and painted so i can show you the before and after pics in the same post. its already sanded down and first round of filler applied. it should be sanded and painted yet this weekend. I think im working harder on this bike for her then i did on my own bike.
Yeah I can see that bare rim sitting in the background with no tire!
well i was going to get them done this weekend but then we bought the wifes bit so they are goin to wait a week or two. Too cold to ride here still anyways....lol
but we are all dying to see pics! lol
lol...pics of this project will have to do for a week or two... dont get the wrong idea tho im dieing to see those new tires on those practicly new rims....lol
Cool project! Did it have full fairings?
originally it did and when i find them it will again but at the moment we are missing all but 2 peices. i have been searching and hope to find them all. i was going to buy a different tank but the one i found was in worse shape then this one so im working on getting it ready to paint right now. it will be in primer sometime tomorrow and painted this weekend. i just ordered a set of forks, tail light and rear plastic that goes under seat and around the tail light. those parts should be here mid next week
I hate waiting for filler to harden. >:(
Tank is done and ready for primer. Well it will be ready for primer as soon as the wife gets the rest of the sanding on the original paint done. :thumb:

man that thing looks like its gonna be a really fun project. Hope you are having a good time
Looking good man! What color scheme are you thinking about?
the wife wants black with pink graphics on it polished wheels will be done on this bike to match my bike with black centers instead of the blue i did on mine.
looking good bud, I just saw a vtr on craigslist. same color too!
Thanks its almost ready for paint. Im really picky when i paint..lol....where was it at?
I just looked for it at my usual CL stops and couldn't find it. Must have sold, there are two others though. Not that sweet color though.
how much and did you notice if they had fairing on them

Here's the nicer one.

The other one
http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/1073776553.html (http://cincinnati.craigslist.org/mcy/1073776553.html)
that first one is really nice. the other one isnt to bad either tho.
I've always wanted one. I think it's a really great little bike. A bit small for my size though. Not sure about that 45hp, however. That's really high for a 250cc at 'only' 13000rpm. Anyway if it is true it is surely at the crank. Rule of thumb is about 15% loss for drivetrain.
My friend had a cbx250 (single cyl) for years. It was a tiny bike but an absolute BLAST to ride. Around 25hp, I think.

here is the painted tank guys. Its dark outside so pics arent real good ill get some outside tomorrow in the sun light.

Wow! Nice work. A definite improvement on its previous condition!
nah, I think the old condition had more "street cred".
Just kidding, looks great, looking forward to seeing more.
thanks guys im really not happy with it but wife wont let me strip it and start over..... >:( :dunno_white: hope im happier with the rest of the build goes better. i was happy with the tank until i painted it.
I love project threads, makes me want to pick up an old bike and start digging in.
Don't strip it and start over. If the rest of the bike turns out as good as the tank it'll be a great looking bike. Show bikes are for trailers, real bikes get ridden. Keep posting, I'm excited to see what comes next.
ok i wont strip it ill just keep going with the rest of the project. I was going to pull front end off today but it was so nice outside me and the wife went outside and did some cleaning since it was already snowing when we bought are new place the end of november. I have to goto work tomorrow so maybe ill get to work on it again tuesday. Im thinking my parts will be here tuesday or so. So i need to get the front end stripped off the bike anyways.
I'm nearly sure that not the stock tank ...
Cool.
Buddha.
Is that a '95 or '96 GMC Jimmy you've got there? Two-door LS, right?
thats the stock tank buddha. yes a 95 jimmy
ok so on to the next part on the bike. the belly pan. I think it was ran over then fixed and then ran over again. After countless hours of searching i came up with no part so its time to glass it back together and bondo it up nice and pretty like the tank. Here are some before and after pics up to the ready do sand down and start filling the outside.

hey this is about the bike not the truck...lol j/k i take it you have a 4dr anyways ill post up more pics as soon as i have it filled and ready for paint.
looking good! Is it warm enough in MI to be using fiberglass?
60 outside today :woohoo: it set in about 10 mins after i was done putting it all on. And i do the filler inside so its all good. first coat of fill is on the part now and prolly ready to start sanding but im eating a bit of lunch right now. :thumb: I should have some more pics of this peice sometime tonight.

these are kinda hard to see ill take a pic once its finished dring and i bring it inside.
Good work! You seem to work pretty fast with bondo/fiberglass. At least much faster than I normally do!
i had to be fast when i used to build limos so these little things go pretty good thanks
Nice work :thumb:
thanks guys. tomorrow will be the easy one to do. then its time to strip off the front end in prep for the new forks that should be here any day.
Wish I could work that fast, hell I've been working on a bracket for the windscreen I'm adding for almost 2 complete weeks!
Thanks,
Nick
Good work!
One question, what grit sandpaper are you finishing with before paint? Looks like you may need to go finer to make the finish a bit smoother. Are you going to color sand and then clear?
right now just to get the bike on the road im sanding with 220 then painting next winter baring any big booboos by the wife ill sand everything and have it painted by my buddy its just a rattle can job to get it all fixed and on the road for her to ride this year. Yeah not the best finish but im betting they have to be fixed again by the end of the year.
Quote from: joshr08 on March 17, 2009, 02:09:49 PM
im betting they have to be fixed again by the end of the year.
WOW, That's just cold.
I hope she don't read that :tongue2:
lol..its ok i told her i said it. :technical:
if you wanted better quality paint than what you get in a rattle can, then go to a automotive paint supplier and they can for a few additional $ can put automotive pant in rattle cans. -- Jim :)
she loves how it looks so far and for rattle can it doesnt look to bad. and like i said right now its warm out so its a fix everything so it doesnt break more and get a coat of paint on it so she can ride asap.....lol
on a side note my tires are getting mounted tomorrow. :woohoo:
Tires for the GS? I gotta get a rear for mine! The weather is great for riding here!
Yes tires for the gs should be mounted today. Not goin to be able to do much work on wifes bike today since it looks and feels like rain. Good day to get a few little things done on my bike.
UPDATE: i did get the tires mounted up on the gs oh wrong thread. lol...I found and ordered upper left and right fairings and the right lower side cover for the bike today they get shipped out from florida in the morning. Looking forward to geting these parts as well as all the others i ordered for the bike. that completes all the plastic for this bike so fixing the little peices that need fixing and paint them all up.
Congrats
UPDATE: The wife and I stripped the front off her bike tonight in prep for the parts coming tomorrow on the UPS truck. The front wheel was a chore. In-board brakes were a new one for me. But that was the hardest part of stripping it all off. So here are some pics of what we did tonight and ill post up more when i put the forks and front end back together.

Wow! Lots of fuses. Like one per turn signal or something.
lol. yeah i havent done any reading in the shop manual about all the fuses yet but im going to have to there are alot of them.
Ok so i was bored tonight so i did a little test fit of parts to see how its going to look and im thinking its going to be a sweet little bike heres a little taste of how it will look when its finished. What do you guys think?
Looking really awesome. Sheesh, you're fast. Wish I could find the time!
That is gonna look pretty slick, keep it up.
UPDATE: its cold and crappy in michigan again. so i cant do any more fiberglassing or painting right now. No parts have came in the mail either so im at a stand still at the moment. No parts = no work. >:( I called the guy i ordered my fairing parts from and he forgot to send them out until i called him so they are going out today. Hopefully they will be here first of next week and i can start preping them for paint.

James
thanks guys. just thought i would let you know that after 4 phone calls to the guy i finally got the ups tracking number and the parts will be here monday if ups stays on track now. :woohoo:
So here in my part of michigan the sun came out this afternoon so I painted my front rim and one of the side covers for the front wheel too. heres some pics. i didnt do any before pics but youll see that this used to be ugly light powder blue.

yeah that looks a lot better than those smurf blue wheels on the previous page :thumb:
Nice job. That turned out really good.
Wow those tires are scary.
you dont think i can get a few more miles outta them????lol ordering new ones in another week or so. if you think thats scarey theres something that you should think about. the guy i got it from put 2 miles on those tires.....lol...thats the front one and there is no tread left at all on the top at all. :cookoo: i figured i better do something with the bike its been a while and i didnt want everyone to forget about my build.
Google says the new ones make 32hp at the crank, ~25 at the wheel. Not bad... 128hp per litre!
Are the new ones fuel injected? But I bet the older ones make similar power anyway. :D
from what i here about 26 hp or so on the 88 i have. :woohoo: i think this will be a fun little bike i cant wait to ride it :thumb:
Hey, anyone know what the supposed benefits of inboard disc brakes were (are)? I know Honda tried them a couple of times on different models, and they're a PITA to service, but I've never heard why they're worth the added hassle and cost. My guess is it moves the brake to the centre axis of the wheel and maybe reduces gyroscopic torque effects under braking? ?? Not that the torque effects are that severe to begin with...
Just curious if anyone knows this answer.
Okay, I can come up with two other more realistic "benefits".
- braking performance less influenced by wet weather (but since 1988 braking materials have probably rendered this "advantage" obsolete).
- central location less prone to crash damage
OK guys i know its been a while and i havent done any work to the bike (been stuck at work) The plastic came in that ive been waiting for so i bolted up one side just to get a efw pics and idea of what its going to look like all bolted together so heres a sneek peek at the bike. What do you think. I know its kinda hard to see but my work room is only so big i couldnt get a good angle on it where its sitting .

looking much better! Really appreciate the work your putting in without dropping lots for others to do the work!
OK guys its awesome today here in michigan so i went out for a ride this morning then came home and put some more time into the wifes bike. Here are a few pics of what i did today.

Looks good! Have you had the bike running yet?
Thanks. I havent fired it since i got it home but i made the guy start it for me before i bought it and it purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrred like a kitten.
Looking good :thumb:
thanks cafe. i wouldnt say it looks new or anything but it likes good enough to ride. its hard to make 21 yr old plastic look new again....lol
lol I see fingerprints! Just messing with you, looking good!
lol..yeah i had to do a little touch up after i mounted them up...oops...lol
Ok so i just got reupolstered the seat and i think it turn out great. I didnt spend the 40 bucks for a seat cover off ebay i just got a peice of vynle and did it like i used to do at the limo shop. What do you guys think of how it looks now.

Freaking nice job bro.
Seat looks great bro!
Thanks guys its almost time to put it on the road just waiting on a few parts but im thinking 2 weeks it should be rollin down the road.
Teach me how to do that!
do what the seat? Its actually really easy. Well it is for me i used to cover parts in my spare time at the limo shop. I think with stripping old cover off and finding my stapler it took about 15-20 mins to complete the seat. Oh and it will be getting the grab strap put back on it when i get that it sown together. It will be a pink grab strap and pink graphics per wifes request. Update on the bike as well I have just ordered the new oring chain, oil filter, spark plugs and new tires. Its not going to be long now :woohoo: I cant wait to ride this beast.
That looks really good buddy it's come a long way since you got it home :thumb:
Thanks bud so has yours. Im toying with the idea of starting to recovering motorcycle seats as a side job. Just for some extra cash. Whats your thought on this idea anyone?
might be tough since that would require them shipping their seat to you and I can't imagine thats a cheap cost. I could see it eating into your prices or driving some customers away.
yeah i was just thinking that.......oh well ill have to come up with something else....lol
It might be worth it to try tho! Offer a couple out and get up some pics of work you've done. You'd be surprised what some people would rather people do for them. I see a bunch of people offering this on craigslist too.
ok i finished the seat grab strap per the wife color request and pulled the rear wheel to prep for paint. I got the new chain in the mail today so as soon as tires get here ill be in business.
ouch the pink has to hurt the manhood, but the things we do to make the fairer sex happy. lol
i actually like it. Its goin to be a great looking/riding little bike. :woohoo:
Update. Today on the UPS truck we got our new kenda front and rear tires 100/90-16 front 130/70-17 rear. At first look they appear to have a similar tread pattern of the shinkos I put on the gs. We also got the new oil filter and plugs. Now i just need a few nutz and boltz from honda since they used some odd ball sizes and i cant get them at the local hardware store. Heres a pic of the new tires.

It's kind of crazy isn't it. It's like watching a football game on tv. I find myself cheering for the honda everytime it scores new parts.
lol...thanks guys barring anything bad happening i should have it rapped up and ready for a test ride next week. The tires are getting mounted up saturday, then i just have to pick up some oil and a few other little things that i will try to pick up at the dealorship while im there saturday. Then ill pull a little 87 octane into her and off i go. :woohoo: :woohoo:
think of me while you ride her....... wait.... that sounds bad, very bad.... anyways...umm... ride a few extra miles for us poor folks with no bike eh? :icon_mrgreen:
well i did get 100 miles on the gs last thursday before we got this last snow storm here in michigan. :thumb: Ill make sure to ride 2 miles extra just for you bud. :woohoo:
:woohoo: :woohoo:
don't lie, you're just using my request for a little extra seat time......

thanks guys. im not totally sold on it yet so before i finish it up and take all the time to do that im goin to think on it for a bit before sanding it down and slicking it before paint. so moral of this story is im not sure if it will ever get finished or not. lol....nope not going to ride b!tch on her bike.
Today the little vtr gets plates and insurance. Im not sure if ill have it out this weekend but theres a chance it could happen so its getting all the stuff to legally take it for a test if i do get it all put back together this weekend. :woohoo:

well guys i got tires mounted up today. I have to take the front one back they mounted it backwards and i didnt notice until i got home. So for my troubles im going to ride it down and they can take the front end back appart and put it on the right way. lol..i'm sure ill have to show them how to take it apart tho. got the back tire on and the new chain mounted as well. I still have to set the chain tension. I got the gs blinkers mounted on the rear of the bike and all wired up and working. We had a little snag with the front left blinker not working. So we (the wife and i, it is her bike and think she should learn as much as possible while we are putting it back together) got out the trusty multimeter and started testing things. First the light bulb. It tested good. So on to the bulb socket. No power. Well now we have to pull the fairings and the headlight to start tracing wires. As soon as i dropped the headlight I found where the wires started and sure enough the wires had came unplugged. I plugged them in and bingo bango we have lights. So blinkers are all working. So after we got the lights working i put the headlight back on and went for the oil change. Super easy and this little thing only takes 2 qts of oil. Then i put the new plugs in it. What a PITA rear plug is behind the frame and the front one is behind the radiator. Got them back in turned the key on just for SAG hit the starter and wow shes purring like a kitten. Ill get some pics of the bike on the ground with the rims and all in a little while.
I still need a set of gs500e style mirrors.

Update: I spend the better part of today cleaning the carbs again. There was alot of crub that i didnt get out in my fast carb cleaning job i did saturday. I just got back from the test ride and i must say if the new 250 ninjas are as fun to ride as this 21 yr old bike is i see a new 250 ninja in my future. This thing is going to be a blast to shoot around town with. I took it up around 12k rpms not sure what gear i was in but it was rollin right along at 70mph.
I should have more pics tomorrow of more glass work. Im going to fix the last 2 peices. 1 side of the belly pan and one side cover has a crack that i didnt see until it was painted and on the bike so i'll sand it down and get it all nice. The wife was out riding it in the yard today after she got home from work and thinks shes going to really like it. This weekend i will ride it up to the school parking lot for her to get some good riding in.

Pick up a bag of tennis balls and cut them in half if you want to set up a little practice course for her. They are esp handy when working on slow tight turns, weaving, dodging and stopping.
heres the wife on one of her many laps around the schools parking lot.
