Title: Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)
Post by: OilSooner on May 06, 2010, 06:43:08 AM
Can anyone give me a good explanation as to what the TPS does, and how it does it?  I have googled it, but havent gotten anything real clear with regards to the GSF.  A good link would work as well, if you dont want to type it out.

Thanks guys.

The Throttle Position Sensor tells the engine what position the throttle is in, hence the name.  This feed back allows the engine control unit (ECU) to adjust things like ignition timing.  The TPS can be adjusted.  Here is a link:

Awesome, thanks!

Does anyone know if the 2004 GS500F's TPS is compatible with any others?  There are non for my bike on eBay, and the dealerships want $85 and a week for a new one!   :icon_eek:

OK, they must have added these on later models as I do not have one on my carbs?!

So is mine on the crank internally?

The 34 mm carbs for >2001 bikes came with TPS sensor in the carbs and new ignition module.

My 02 GS doesn't have a TPS, they started with the 04 F models along with the new modules and electric tachs.  Pre 04 GS's have no throttle position feedback.  The 01-02 did have the 34mm 3 circuit carbs though, a major improvement over my 97.

Haha, I was wondering what you guys were talking about. I had never seen any sensors on my bike, I was going to guess you were just making things up.

Is it a bad idea to ride with a broken TPS while Im waiting on the new one to arrive?  Or not that big of a deal?

What kind of problems are you having with the TPS broken?

It stalls sometime when the clutch is pulled in.  I am wondering if riding with it broken will upset the timing or permanantly hurt anything else?

How did you diagnose a broken TPS, though?  Just from the stalling?

Well, the stalling could be caused by other things.  But, the first thing I did was pull the carbs to clean them, and when I did, I noticed the TPS was broken.  So, I have to replace that.  The floats were off in the carbs, which was one problem, but the bike is still stalling when I pull in teh clutch sometimes, so I am assuming its the TPS since I know its broken and needs to be replaced.

Broken as is connectors snapped off or wires broken?

I'd suggest cold engine, idle speed or something else in that vein... there is a TPS test thing on the forum that ive seen briefly, might be worth looking for it even if it only confirms you need to spend $85 on it rather than replacing anyway to find it doesnt fix it
