OK, The last thing I want to do is offend or upset or anger someone. But I really need to know, what the hell is up with all the cat loving stuff seen on every motorcycle , guitar, and woodworking forum. I mean cats are cool and all but it seems like any of these sites you visit you have HUGE feline fanatics showing off this "cute" picture or that "witty" little cat meme. Is this a age thing, a interest in these hobbies thing, or something that I am missing thing. Does EVERYBODY feels this way? The last cat I had was hit by MY schoolbus at MY stop right in front of while I was waiting to go to school one morning. Did this permanently alter my 10 year old mind to block out any attachment or joy that can be given by these furry things. Like I said, I don't mean any offense by this but it's been in the back of my mind for the better part of a year now and adidasguy's cinco de meow post set this thought/rant going. If somebody would PLEASE explain this to me in a way I can understand I'd be very grateful.

Huff... the "pic of the cat with funny comment" works because the cats appear to have so many expressions. Some look cute, some look mad, crazy, bored, etc. What makes it all work is the nonhuman aspect together with an apparent human thought that is somewhat humorous.

If it was just me in the house, I would prefer no cats. My parents had a cat all growing up when I lived in the Midwest. I didn't mind until I brought home friends that blew up like a balloon cause they were allergic. When I got married, my wife had 3. That was 7 years ago. They were old then, and the last one died in October. She was 20. That's old for a cat. The 3 year old was like 'I miss kitty', now we have a new one from the SPCA. Cincinnati is overrun by cats, and the new one was like $5. Came with the state of ohio mandated shots and was already spayed. The no kill shelter wanted $80. I wanted to name the cat 'five bux', but I lost that one :D
The cat has a pistol of a temper and loves to be outside ALL FREAKING DAY and screams when it cannot be outside. Tears through screens (we keep the windows open cause the AC is expensive) to get outside, and is a damn contortionist.
I tolerate them, but I prefer dogs. A dog can be trained. A cat trains you.

Fathead aka Johnny, Bad Kitty, or worse when he makes a mess. He's the XL version and been with me for about 8 years, something like that. He's a good cat. She left him along with whatever else she didn't want when she moved out. Now if he'd just learn how to make sammiches I'd be A OK.

See what you gotta appreciate about cats is there athletism. There is pretty much nothing they cant do. Balance, power, speed, agility are overal the best in the animal kingdom.

I kinda think I might be starting to maybe get it. While there are many valid points I believe there are so many different reasons for people to like cats that it won't be something I can ever really get. I think I'll stick with dogs. But please continue to elaborate and add your theories.
I love my cat! She's my girl if I'm having a bad day or not feeling well she will sleep with me and want me to play with her. It turns out to be beneficial for me too if I'm in a bad mood I'm typically not after a game of "I'm gonna get me a cat" which is like hide and seek. I will chaser her down the hall she hides under the bed I will say "Where's my cat. I don't see no cat" and go to walk away at that point she jumps out and starts batting my feet LOL!
She is also my guard cat!

sounds like someone didnt housetrain their chihuahuas. as long as feces isnt the cause of said smell, one doesnt stink more than the other. ( cat versus dog ) a cat in need of a bath will smell as bad as a dog. all cats need to be bathed eventually ( as do all dogs )

we used to bathe our cats on occasion a while ago, but those nails are something serious and not worth it, unless there's a specific reason they need bathed. The dogs get bathes all the time. Normally they don't need them, but they always get one any time I take them swimming, or go to the dog park or anything like that. You never know what they're getting into or what the story is with other dogs, not to mention even around well behaved dogs they're bound to come home covered in a big of dog slobber haha.
i only bathe em really if theres a flea problem that needs to be dealt with. ( then flea meds get applied.

All of the cats I've had all knew their name and came when called. They all had no problem being upsidedown offering me their belly like a dog. They NEVER jumped up on tables or kitchen benches or the like. And other places. I trained them well.

How To Give A Cat A Pill
1. Pick up the cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on either side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.
2. Retrieve pill from floor and cat from under chair. Cradle cat in left arm and repeat process.
3. Retrieve cat from bedroom and throw soggy pill away.
4. Take a new pill from foil wrap. Cradle cat in left arm holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for a count of ten.
5. Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse in from garden.
6. Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between the knees. Holding front and rear paws, ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold cat's head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.
7. Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill from foil wrap. Make a note to buy a new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep shattered figurines from hearth and set aside for gluing later.
8. Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with it's head just visible from beneath spouse's armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force cat's mouth open with pencil and blow down straw.
9. Check label to make sure that pill is not harmful to humans. Drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply band-aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

13. Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining room table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from garage. Force cat's mouth open with small trowel. Push pill into mouth followed} by large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 1/2 pint of water down throat to wash pill down.
14. Get spouse to drive you to emergency room. Sit quietly while doctor stitches finger and forearm and removes pill remnants from right eye. Stop by furniture store on the way home to order a new table.
15. Arrange for vet to make house call.

It turns out the parasite hijacks human immune cells to travel around the body, and increases the release of gaba-Aminobutyric acid (GABA), which can cause your brain to go a bit haywire.
Researcher Antonio Barragan, from the Swedish Institute for Communicable Disease Control, said the discovery of how the parasite moves around was "surprising".
"For Toxoplasma (the parasite) to make cells in the immune defense secrete GABA was as surprising as it was unexpected, and is very clever of the parasite," he said.
"It would now be worth studying the links that exist between toxoplasmosis, the GABA systems and major public health threats."
Earlier this year, Czech biologist Jaroslav Flegr told The Atlantic he suspected his mind had been taken over by parasites.
He wasn't dismissed as crazy, and gradually his theories are being bolstered by science.
He says the bug may kill as many people as malaria, and suspects other scientists don't want to investigate further because there is "strong psychological resistance to the possibility that human behaviour can be influenced by some stupid parasite".
"Nobody likes to feel like a puppet," he said.
His research found infected men were more likely to get about in rumpled clothes, to ignore rules, and to be oblivious to other people's opinions, while infected women were more outgoing, trusting, and rule abiding.

I routinely have one of our four cats running and then sliding across our tile floor when it tries to make a quick U-turn to chase a laserpointer-dot up and down the hall.
I've also taught the same cat to walk by me using the laserpointer. Of course, it's nearly always looking for the dot while it's walking with me...but still...cats are awesome.
I actually train dogs AND cats for folks who have common behavioral issues with their animals. Really, I train the animal caretaker more than the actual animal. Most cases only take but a couple visits to correct the behavior and begin building healthier behaviors for both the animal and its caretaker.
At my regular day job, we have cats which keep mice out of our facility. I have trained all of them to come at the sound of a bell. They are allowed to roam the plant during non-operating hours, but must be brought into their room during operational hours. So it is imperative for them to come when called... for emergency situations as well. It normally wouldn't be too hard to do if you have food, but they are not allowed food to bring them in, so that they are the best mice killers they can be when they are on duty... It took two weeks to get all of them on board, but a full year and half later they don't know a life otherwise.
We have one office cat we keep for the same reason, but she does not go out into the facility. She is only 7 months, but I have trained her very well. She does not use a litter box, but instead, we let her outside on our breaks with us to do her business. She sits, sits pretty, lays down, comes, goes into her crate at the sound of a bell... probably more I'm forgetting I'm sure.
I have a video from me training her to lay down months ago. I used treats for her at the time to get her to pay attention... being such a young cat, she had 'shiny object syndrome' .. so it took a little more motivation. Now affection is all she needs.

I don't dislike cats. I look at them with the same disinterest they look at me with. I actually don't believe in keeping any any animal especially dogs locked up. These are animals that where bread for the pleasure of people. They will never be free as they should no matter how well they are taken care of. Those poor, malnourished babies that don't get meat which is required for all the proteins necessary to build muscle and BRAIN matter. Man evolved as an omnivore, not a vegan. Cats MUST have meat. They can't digest grains and stuff like that very easy. Some cats get sick with vegetables and grains.

Dude probably pays by the meg and when you link to images on his site you cost him money. No big deal to just copy and host somewhere else thats free. The reason you see the image on some machines and not others might be because you are connecting through a proxy that caches or they are locally cached on your machine.

I have two bikes, I can ride neither presently due to two broken legs and a total knee reconstruction (that's the short list of my injuries). So when I am not attending medical related appointments/requirements, socialising with friends or watching movies from my library during my 12 month break from work recovering I do just spend time talking to my 2 cats and 2 guinea pigs. only happened once. not hard thank GOD. his traction on hardwood floors is like ice road truckers on drag slicks. sopunds odd but this cat DOES look at me like a parent. knows when health is about to crash he will NOT leave me alone. follows me wherever i go around house. I wont let him outside, cause hed try to follow me to work. I saw a few cats meet their demise when I was a kid and it's tough, but don't let that ruin your love of kitties. I'm not sure about woodworking but I can tell you motorcycles, guitars, and cats are cool and sexy. They all represent non-conformism and independence to one extent or another. I also know why some people don't like the #1 pet on Earth. Some are allergic, but cats don't blindly obey. Cat hater most often = bossy control freak, like the retired teacher across the street. I've thought long and hard about this. Unless you're allergic cats are adorable, unless the fact you can't control them drives you nuts. My daughter gets mad at the cats because she grabs and holds them too long then they run away and won't come to her. I still tell her to this day, "Don't be a control freak and they'll come to you!" By the way gentlemen, the same strategy works with women. Just be sweet and agreeable and you'll be amazed how far you get. :thumb:
I love my cats even though I am allergic to them and having recently had my spleen removed, they can literally kill me (I must have the cleanest hands in the world). They frustrate me me to tears with their silliness, disobedience and sheer don't give a rats attitude, but that's what makes them a challenge. Plus my male cat yet again chased another dog of the property yesterday, that is cool, he is like that Schrodinger's cat. :cool:
Both of the cats we owned came from the local animal shelter. My wife likes to say that the reason she picked out one of them is that he was on his hind legs with front paws on window and he was licking the glass. The other one had a stubby tail from birth, but they were both the most loving cats we could have asked for.
Unfortunately, we had to give them up when we moved because we have two sister-in-laws who are deathly allergic to them. They both went to a no-kill shelter and were adopted within 6 weeks.
Still miss them, and would get another if it didn't mean our sister-in-laws couldn't come to our house.
Funny that you cannot have cats because of the sisters in law. If they are that allergic they should be in a bubble. Proper management is all that is needed. This is simply because cat remnants are actually everywhere so they cannot avoid them. Even if they go to the Antarctic scientific stations where no cat has ever been taken, there are traces of domestic cat allergens.
Yeah, probably poor choice of words on my part. They have drugs they take to ward off their allergic reactions, but the drugs generally make them sleepy and poor company.

and as much as i dislike peering at barf photos... the back edge of the barf in the photo... looks grey ... from concrete? ... he a grey cat? .. if he a grey cat the possibly got some hairball issues going on... used to have a russian blue that would barf up food with hair around the edges.... :icon_neutral: .. changed his diet a little .. and mixed in some bran (yes like you can put on your cereal) or the 'hairball' food pellets... mainly more fibre to try catch the hair and get it to move...

Dammit is weird. was total crazy when i stole him. ( necessary rescue theft) he follows me like im his father. EVERYWHERE. anyhooo one of his crazy issues is food. he thinks if he doesnt eat it all, he will be out of food in a bad way. he eats without chewing which usually results in a yak. this is phasing out. love this cat. he sits where i do, above me, beside me, on my lap at times. like a child i never had :)

We ( guys) can usually get away with 3 pairs max of shoes. 1 for work, 1 for home, and one formal. ive seen some bad tempered if caught wild you WONT domesticate them ever. then again, ive seen some that were rased from young, and were as docile as a housecat.

I went into a burning home a few years back to go after the ladies cats and dogs. cats got out fine. dogs however , that ended up beign a recovery not a rescue sadly.

Surprising thing is it CAN have real time engine and systems status radioed via satellite. But you pay extra. After the cost of the plane, transmitting data to existing satelites doesn't really cost much. I'd think Boeing would want it for fault finding and maintenance. Should be a free service.
Anyway, WTF with what we are told by out goobermint that we monitor every inch of the world and can lose a big plane. Guess we are wasting money on our surveillance systems.

Haha, thanks! Yeah, they are fleece and super comfy. I wear dirty ass jeans for work and usually take care of errands on the way home so when I get home and get cleaned up I usually hop into these.
That wall that my desk is against is an outside wall and isn't insulated the best, so if I'm barefoot it gets cold. I usually run that little electric heater and that was the first time my cat discovered it.
Now whenever I am at my PC he has to be under foot, lol!

My 3 kitties used to get along well... for about 6 months actually... until the white and gray one started bullying the calico... she got so scared of him that I had to separate them. I'm super lucky that half of my basement is finished and the rest of it +the garage is clean and tidy. She gets the whole downstairs/garage area and the other two get the upstairs/main level of my house.
Wish I could put them all back together again... or be around more but work work work :technical:

Luna looks gorgeous :D My parents had a great pyrenees/retriever mix and he was awesome. HUGE... looked like a deer with his tan coloring and white legs... his name was Hannibal and lived to be almost 14.

Dammit the wondercat, after 10 years of being afraid of outside, 3 days after I got outside of hospital, decides he wants to be an outside cat now. Plus he wants to eat dogfood. This dog like cat has always been crazy. Can't explain the dogfood thing. Hes never smoked pot so I can't explain this. Plus many times heck he will eat his own food without chewing it. This scares me. I cat napped him to save his life. He ate like this cause he didn't know when or if had get another meal. Hes weird as heck , but love this cat like Hes a child of mine.
