Question:
Who waves at Scooters and mopeds??
Option 1: I do-sure there just like me
Option 2: No way-
Option 3: Start to wave cuz I can't tell it's a scooter until it's too late
Running a poll here.
Who waves to mopeds and the like??
Read an article about people going to wave and the flipping the finger :P
I always mess up and forget that they are a moped before I even notice.
Need another option.
Start to wave cuz I can't tell it's a scooter until it's too late.

Right on- So what do you do? look like your going to wave and slip them the finger =]
Negative. 125cc motorcycles - yes. 650 Burgman - no way.
When i'm out for rides with friends and we see a scooter....i'll admit i'm the guy of the group screemin schoootaahh in a girlish voice.
It's kinda silly to ride a scooter and not wave at other scooters? People that have problems with scooters are just overcompensating for some kind of problem with their own sexual orientation, in other words...real men don't mind being seen on a scooter or waving at them :whisper:

I voted NO WAY, BUT you would need to define scooter!
I have and do wave at the larger scooter riders eg 650 bergman but do not wave at the smaller scooter riders because here you dont need a bike license to ride most of the ones you see on the road here (less than 100cc)

Mopeds have pedals, scooters don't....so you wave at your dad then?
Yup- Live in two different towns and thats his form of transpo-
I wave. I like to think they either didnt have enough funds at the time to get something bigger or they were too scared to get something bigger and wanted to stay in their comfort zone until they are ready to move up with us (or past us....LOL)
I absolutely do. If you have never ridden a scooter, try it. Compared to riding any kind of "normal" motorcycle, it'll mess you all up. The weight feels different, it handles very differently, you naturally swing your leg off the back seat upon dismount out of habit, etc, etc. Anybody that can ride a scooter (or moped for that matter) on a regular basis has my respect.
But for what it's worth, I wave at everybody on less than 4 wheels.

Even small children in big wheels? I knew there was a reason mamma said don't talk to strangers ;)
Just teasing!
Heck yeah! I had a big wheels when I was a kid.......
I wave at anyone not in a cage. They are out enjoying the open road and the elements just like us riders. I feel like the wave signifies something greater than qualifying another rider they are as 'cool' as yourself. It means: be safe out there. Enjoy the road. Have a good ride... Etc... To me it's a reminder of the risk that I am rider surrounded by cages... Not just that I'm part of some cool club that exclusively or selectively waves at each other.

... invariably wear an open faced helmet and whatever office clothes they will be in that day - office pants, plain shoes, shirt for men; skirts, heels, etc., for women.
They weave in and out of slow moving traffic like they are impervious to coming off and generally disobey a lot of road rules. They hug the curb cause traffic goes faster than them, and in so doing invite cars to squeeze by them and the oncoming traffic. And in this country they do not need a motorcycle license to ride one.
These types get nothing from me whatsoever.
Michael
I'm with mister I don't give them the time of day all too often they are in an open face helmet and not much else so yeah I hope they fall off and learn their lesson to wear some f%$king gear.
The scooter crowd seems to be more about cheapo transportation between A and B rather than enjoying the freedom of the open road as it was. I wave back if they wave first. One of these days I really want to try a Burgman :)
Mister NSW makes those little scooter riders get a license but they still do everything you mentioned anyway.

The vast majority of guys that I've seen on trikes (Harley / Goldwing / whatever) are older riders that could have a hard time physically holding a bike up. There is 1 guy I work with that just bought a brand new Harley trike - he is on the verge of retirement and has been riding some type of two-wheeled motor bike for over 50 years. Just some food for thought.
As far as Can Am Spyders go, I wave at them as well. You just never know if it's some inexperienced rider on one, or maybe a wartime vet that can't ride a 2 wheeled cycle for whatever reason.
I don't bother anymore. They almost never waive back.
Geez, not much scooter love here...:)
The wife likes them, so we generally have one or 2. Right now a Vino 125 and a PCX125. Had a Burgman 400 in the past.
They're a hoot!!! Just a ton of fun to ride, especially the smaller ones. You can ride the everloving snot out of them and no one notices. :) And get 90-100mpg while you're doing it.
If you haven't been on one try to get a ride, preferably one in the 125-150 range. But only if you're secure in your manhood. :icon_mrgreen:
I like em -- great utility vehicles at the track. Just, the riders make it pretty clear that we aren't part of the same community. Kind of a bummer. :\

I ride to relax or.....the
"Vulcan Mind Dump" as I like to call it. The CVT tranny is the wave of the future, it puts an engine at the proper Rpm [always] then the CVT just increases the ratio. I can twist the grip to 5800 Rpm at the top of an on ramp to I-5, at the bottom of the on ramp, still spooling 5800 Rpm....but doing 75 Mph, the overall ratio increases but the Rpm is always correct, even if your Rainman. Laugh at scooterz if you want (^not you^)....CVT will be in all cars soon. Very relaxing, especially if your looking for the

It really depends. When I was in high school and college, I had a Honda Elite 250 scooter, and bikers would wave to me all the time. But then again, it was usually while cruising through the back roads of Delaware. That situation is much different than running into a hipster on a Honda metro at a stoplight on the way to starbucks.
I wave to riders, and I'm not sure all scooters are riders.

Haven't I made it abundantly clear.....that assclown on a scooter can be a rider with many more years of experience than yourself, show some respect..wave :whisper:
EDIT: ^^Reading this today...I sound a bit like an assclown myself, sorry
Stevo, you might appreciate this. Last year there was a group of us going from Pittsburgh to Birmingham. Since I had a truck and trailer full of stuff, I got to drive down. But 2 of my friends and an older gentleman they know wanted to ride down. My friends ride a GS750 and a BMW airhead - the older gentleman has a Burgman.
Once they got into Alabama, the guys on the GS and BMW nearly fell off their bikes and kissed the ground. The guy on the Burgman steps off, puts his gear away, walks around talking to everybody, etc. My friend on the GS said "If he could have a refueling jet fill up that Burgman on the highway, he would never stop riding until he arrives at his destination."
Yeah, having full frontal protection really makes a difference on long rides, so much that when it warms up the Burgman goes to the back row and I start riding something from the "Stevo Summer Collection"...GSX650F, Ninja, Wee Strom. If I had the room the GS500F would still be around, the Burgman is just a better bike for commuting, it was hard letting the GS go down the road.
EDIT: To get back on topic...I try and wave to everybody, even LEO's :dunno_black:

Most of the people I see around here (Northern Virginia) on trikes/can-ams are middle aged men with too much money who have no interest in learning to ride properly but want to say they have a bike. They tend to be the kind of person who rides only to bars or coffee shops so they can be seen riding something.
i can tell you the only other people i see on the road throughout the winter are guys on scooters. funny, it gets a little rainy and all the harley guys and sport bike guys disappear.... but i still see the scooter guys. so yes, i absolutely wave ever time i see a guy on anything with 2 wheels.
mikey
The HD riders I use to pass everyday learnt to at least nod, cause I nodded or waved everyday and eventually I brushed off on them. I noted on my last group ride before wrecking that only 2 other riders(out of 22) nodded to on coming bikes. I was disappointed but then most of the group I didn't even realise they knew what a bike was.
I really don't care what someone is riding - cruiser, sport bike, scooter, moped - whatever. If they wave, I'l wave back. Anyone who's willing to risk the public roads full of blind cagers just to enjoy the ride 2 wheels can give gets my respect.

1st, man Steve, I understand they are your kids and so forth, and hey your an adult so wear what you want. But you never know what is going to happen. Have you seen the videos of a deer coming out of the woods while the rider is going 70MPH? All I can say is 35 years of crash free driving doesn't mean tomorrow you won't get T boned. I had a close friend lose her father in a bike accident and she lost part of her jaw because of skull cap helmets. If you say "that won't happen" then I pray you stay as lucky as you have been.
2nd Screw scooters... the new ones look like CBRs with the dual lights and are so fast I can't flip them off fast enough halfway through the wave...
~~
On Topic: I currently ride a scooter (Genuine Blur SS220i) and so does my mom (Honda Reflex).
On her Reflex, she gets waves constantly. The Reflex is like a maxi-scoot so it mostly looks like a motorcycle from the front. My Blur does not. I've gotten a random wave or head nod, but usually not. I don't wave back to anyone, but instead incline my head towards them. I'm still too green to be taking my hand off the handlebars. :)
When I do finally get my motorcycle, I already have my wave conditions planned out (once I feel safe enough to) and here they are:
Scoot or Motorcycle, don't care.
I see the 2 wheeler coming at me and the rider is wearing a helmet? Wave
I see the 2 wheeler coming at me and the rider is not wearing a helmet of any kind (and most likely no other proper gear)? Nope
I plan on waving to people who aren't retards, regardless of their bike of choice.

Its your choice on how you ride...
I know people that wont even wear a helmet becuase of the fear of becoming a veggie after an accident...
Preferrably-I wear all my gear, gf has a helmet and boots... in all reality when I can afford to buy her some gear this year I will and she will be fully dressed as well..
Its your life/ Your choice but on the 2nd note...Some people I would wanna flip off!!
(not trying to derail here, but it came up eh?)
I'm also for people wearing what they want, but it's a different case when you have a kid on the back. I guarantee if I ever take my niece out on the back of a bike it's gonna be full face, leather jacket, gloves, and boots. It's irresponsible to put a kid in danger in the way it's pictured in that photo.
The only thing that sucks about putting your kid on a bike is their gear lasts a year if your lucky cause the little darlings keep outgrowing it.

the most fun i've had on two wheels is dualsporting. the most fun i've had commuting is on a scooter.
250cc's of fuel injected, twist-n-go, 20-pack-AND-STEAKS-storage-under-seat, 90mph top speed (omg slowww!), 80mpg .....
scooter. i'm looking into replacing my 'maxi' hyosung 250 with a supermaxi (omg feminine reference !) yamaha majesty 400. don't need the power, it has more stealth-camping storage under the seat, and clears knobbies better :icon_mrgreen:
Quoteclears knobbies better
hahahahaha, if you're referring to seagrams, i haven't heard it called knobby in forever.
As a long time backpacker, packing for a ride to some place kind of came naturally. I find that I can pack all I need in a backpack, and strap it to the passenger seat, off I go. Now, I'm sure a scoot would be better, maybe more comfortable.
my take OT: I wave to scooters. Where I'm from, scoots are usually captained by rather vapid, (but deservedly so) attractive, young, sorority women. so, yes, I wave, often.
I agree with tristik, i don't wave at people who don't wear helmets, especially on sportbikes. No use making friends with someone who's likely going to be dead soon.

My statement was a attempt to counter any thought that riding with skull caps was okay for children, riding with children in the first place is incredibly dangerous and probably should not be done on any sort of a regular basis but providing sub standard protection is a serious problem, any statement to the contrary should not stand.
Also statements like "I have rode for 35 years accident free" are problematic to say too. The statistics are the statistics but outliers exist. I hope you ride for another 35 accident free but please don't ever give someone the idea that riding is safe. This is one of the most dangerous things humans can do. We offer ourselves virtually unprotected up against some of the biggest moving things that the average human deals with. We risk it for the thrill of the ride and the love of the adventure but its still not in any way a safe thing to do. The second you think your invulnerable or safe is the second you have turned from in danger to reckless.
I hope that anyone who reads this understands my plea, that we need to never be complacent with ourselves on a bike, and that we need to strive daily to improve our skills.

Today I saw a little red scooter with a pirate flag flying on the back. No plates or signals driving down middle of road.
were you hoping it would stopp so you could put a sticker on it saying " my other bike is a schwinn"?
I wouldn't know if I should wave for the awesome pirate flag... or kick it over for being a dbag...
I planes to take a pick when he parked but he rode through the drive through!
It depends on the scooter, the new ones that look like motorcycles bug me, every person i know who rides one is an arrogant D-bag who claims motorcycles are deathtraps but their precious scooter somehow isnt?
Now for those 50-125cc retro scooters... i used to ride one (my mom refused to let my get my motorcycle liscense) so i will wave to someone on those who looks like they are having fun, after all its all about being on the road! plus it's, much more fun to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow
I've been flipped off once and it was by a bike who apparently didnt like my bike i guess, so i flipped him off and the rest of his group waved to me lol i waved to them as well.
on a side note, hows the brain bucket on a sport bike? i always thought it looked wierd having a half helmet on a sport bike, but thats probably cause sport bikes tend to cause problems :icon_twisted:

that was actually intended as a joke. and 1%er's tend not to be fat / slow, just sayin.

Oh boy I hate being put into that stereo type... People at my work assume I ride 90+ MPH because I have a sport bike..Then when they hear well I get close to 70 mpg so ridng 65 on the highway is like an eye opener to them.
I also wear HD leather gloves on the bike... My gf laughs at that but hey it works!

some scooter dudes that pass and LEAVE sportbikers in the twisties ;-)
and some dualsport crazies that make 2 stroke carmicheal wannabies cry in the woods ;-)
but i'm just a weirdo in full leathers, with a dualsport helmet, mining gloves, and motox boots.... on a scooter

Waving?? Is that what people are always doing when I pass another bike? And all this time I thought people on bikes just used hand signals more!! :icon_twisted:
Oh my! I can't tell if this is sarcasm.

If you are serious, welcome to 'The Wave'. You may now utilize your left hand for a friendly wave exclusively toward other riders.

the first grind on a scooter is "OH shaZam!!" and the heart races, anticipating a wheel lift or incredibly embarrassing high side.... on a lol scooter.
then every turn after that, is just trying to do it again ;-)
