Hey fellas,
Figured I would start my build thread. It's a bit late so I have a bunch of stuff to update right off the bat! I bought the bike a while back and I pretty much knew I was going to be changing a lot of things. Without further ado; here is what I need/needed to do:
- Mirrors (done)
- New instrument cluster parts (done)
- New rear fairings with center piece (done)
- Repaint everything (done)
- Install stock dog bones (didn't change anything)
- Install shorter dog bones (done)
- New taillight (done)
- New Blinkers (done)
- Fix speedometer problem (fixed)
- Fix all electrical (fixed)
- Drag bar handle bars (Installed OEM 89 Clip-ons)
- New exhaust (Installed Full Jardine SS system)
- Install R6 shock (Installed 2004 Katana 600 shock)
- Sonic fork springs (.90 kg/mm installed)
- K&N air filter (Went with OEM instead)
- Belly Pan (Decided not to get one)
- Replace scooter headlight with stock (done)
- Adidas GS500 chain guard (done)
- GSXR rider/passenger pegs (done)
- New fork rubber cap (done)
- Hand controls from 01+ (Wouldnt work because of wiring)
Thats about it. I will probably be adding more stuff as I go when the thoughts come to mind.
Heres some pictures cause I know we all love them!
New end bar mirrors:

Looking good. Pinstriping makes it different
Haha I'm removing those. I want to paint the bike blue and black like this but with either black or white Suzuki Decals:

I'm going to have a complete set of rear plastics for sale soon. Complete with that center piece!
I'll pm you, but I'm supposed to be getting some from Adidas soon.
Please don't trash the pin striped parts until I can see them.
Oh, wait, you don't come to West Seattle. :flipoff:
Never mind. Go ahead and trash them. I'll send the half a dozen blue sets I have to the dumpster! :flipoff: :flipoff: :flipoff:
OK that tailight is sick, I may have to steal that idea. Looks kinda retro..
What kinda mods did that take?
Are those bars stock?
Nice bike!
Phenix has an LED smoked one from Loghts4All.
 No one raved when I put it on him.
Oh, wait, you weren't on the board when I did that. :icon_lol:

Noooo don't do it Adidas. Save one rear blue full tail plastic for me please :) I have spring break begining March 15th so I'll be over there for a week and I know I can make it over then. And right now I'm in the process of sanding the passenger grab bar. Just going to paint that and the front fender primer black until I'm ready for real paint.

Bars are stock as far as I know, or really close to stock. I'm going to be swapping them out for some drag bars soon though. And for the taillight, there all I had to do was drill two holes in the middle of the two holes already there for the taillight on the piece that attaches to the frame. Like this:
Ahh thanks Tombs..
Jacob sorry for the thread hijack!
Haha I could care less, I really like the YZF taillights. The more the merrier!! :) One thing I have over them is the black out part in the middle though. I think it looks nice.

Ok last reply being OT. :thumb:
the ones I bought, didnt have to drill or modify anything.

When you put that pic of Phenix up in my thread, I noticed, and searched for it to no avail. Then one day I stumbled across mention of it on (I think) Pablo's page. This is the one I bought, and I can't wait to put it on.

Started sanding my passenger grab bar and found out something interesting. Apparently my bike was pink, white, yellow, ugly maroon, and now the blue I am going to paint it haha.

OK still off OT and still hijacking but...
What about these with the built in turn signals

Prolly not legal in Cali but slick!
You think people will now which signal you have on?

Its like a color wheel.. ;)
I am sure the base colors are a primer and a base for the Yellow.
Yea, grey primer was used for each paint job I believe.
And the integrated taillight would work, but its more on the spendy side and its illegal. I dont really care about things being illegal, I will use them anyways, but I do care about money spent haha.

Ya me too, I just pulled the trigger on the stock one with the blacked out area like yours for $25 bucks shipped off of ebay
http://www.ebay.com/itm/98-99-00-01-YAMAHA-YZFR1-YZF-R1-TAILLIGHT-TAIL-LIGHT-BRAKELIGHT-BRAKE-LIGHT-OEM-/170933486900?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27c
I can always go with brighter or LED bulbs in that housing later I figure
I was going to buy that one but I was skeptical because of the rest of the stock r1 crap that it comes with on the back of the taillight. You should be able to take it off though. Good buy. Did I mention I really like it!?
Primered the fender and the grab bar today. Just using Rustoleum sandable black primer.
Did you remove the wheel to take the fender off? I've always done fender removal with the wheel on, but it's a pain. Only because I've never removed the front wheel before
Yup just unscrewed it and pulled it out. Will probably have to remove wheel to put it back on for convenience reasons. Taking of the front wheel is simple, putting it back in is where things get to be a hassle. Then you need some one to hold up the front while you try and align the speedometer, spacer, both fork holes, and the hole in the rim.
...Yeah, off is a cinch.. I put a little scratch on the rim trying to get the front back on by myself :embarrassed:
- Bboy
Maybe I'll just stick to my way for now. Or not paint the fender until I get a new wheel soon
Just got done with the base coat on my fender and grab bar. Cant wait to see what it looks like after sanding it and applying 2k clear coat with sand and wax.
I think When I put the fender back on the bike when its all painted, to avoid scratches, I will take the wheel partially off like I did before when I fixed my speedometer. Still was quite the PITA trying to put everything back in place.
Putting the wheel back on shouldn't be too difficult- just put it up on the center stand, then rock it back and put paint cans under each side of the cradle frame. Should give you the clearance and stability necessary to fiddle with aligning everything up front. Of course if you have proper jack stands, that's even better!
I honestly think trying to put the fender on WITH the wheel in place is more of a PITA than the process of removing the wheel, lol. Has to be one of the stupidest front fender designs ever...
I just got my 2 sets of gsxr pegss. Gunna grind em down at school then put them on next weekend. Did you get a full set sparticus?
Yep. Rider and passenger pegs. Looks nice, though there is a slight amount of play in them.
And just an FYI- I remounted my wheels today without any help, so it can be done with the paint cans. I put the rear wheel on first so I could rock the bike back on its center stand and shove a few blocks of wood on top of the paint cans which gave me plenty of room to slide the front wheel up under the fender. Took some fidgeting, but was able to line up the wheels, spacers, calipers and speedo mount to the frame by myself. Just thought I'd let you know in case you wanted to go that route...

would be funny for gits and shiggles. to just clearcoat the bike o many colours.
So did you drill larger holes to fit the gsxr posts that hold the peg on? And for the passengers, did you pit a kotter pin or something to stop it from falling?
and yea yamaha, was thinking about that for my old bike, actually didn't look to bad when i sanded it lol.
Finally got my new pegs on. Heres the before and after.

So I might have changed my mind on paint. All black with silver or white Suzuki decals on tank and tail plastics would be cheaper and easier. What do you guys think?
Your before and after pic seems to just be before...
As for paint, if you go all black (you mean frame too?) definitely go with silver or gray decals- would look much more sleek. If your frame is silver, all the better. ;)
Also, sorry I didn't respond about the mounting methods of my pegs, I somehow missed that post...
You can't see the picture with the GSXR pegs installed? Strange... And its okay I figured it out myself! Haha. And yes, I do have a silver frame. I might just have to paint my rims either silver or black. Black rims would be kind of interesting with silver frame and black plastics/tank with silver decals. :icon_idea:
Ah, ok, now I can see the after pic. Looks good!
How did it work out using the pins that came with the pegs? I just used the stock pins as I was worried about it shifting in the hole due to not being the right length. Of course with the stock pin though, there is a bit of play in the peg as it is a bigger diameter hole. Overall, I'm thinking your solution might be slightly better...
Thanks! And yea, I just drilled new holes for all the new pins. They work very well. And that's why I did not want to use the stock pins, because they are smaller than the hole in the pegs (not to mention mine were rusted and bent). How did you stop the partner pegs from falling all the way?
Large cotter pins.
I may drill my brackets out and use the bigger pins. I'm not having any problems with my current setup, so I'm not in any hurry, but I'm sure I'll get bored soon and need something to do in the garage... :icon_rolleyes:
Indeed. I had an idea to drill the right size hole for the stock pins and use the two good ones I had left over as a stopper for the passenger pegs but I got anxious and just wanted to ride haha.
Did a bunch of stuff today after finally going to Adidas guy's bike cave. Low and behold, it was everything it seemed to be online. So heres what we did today. We checked out why the rear was so low, could not figure anything out. Shock is stock, links are stock... who knows. Frame altered some way? Swing arm altered? Couldnt figure it out. Maybe the 89 frame is lower in the rear anyways? What do you guys think?
After looking at all that, we replaced the gauges, got a new chain guard, new gs shock, new lowering link kickstand, LED dash lights, and new rear plastics with center piece. Also other small things like rubber gromets and nuts/bolts. And.... Heres some pictures!
New Gauges and LED dash lights.

Hope you guys like em'! Adidas really helped me out here and I know he will continue to do so. Now I need a belly pan!
Oh, and those plastics are going to be painted. No need to rag on him for having a bike that looks like a Mardi Gras float (for the moment). The replacement plastics have all the tabs.
Forgot that I gave you a replacement rear fender and tail-tidy light.
I am still confused as to why your bike is low. We will get it solved.
I have to say your bike has the best bailing wire I have ever seen! :icon_lol:
Oh, I forgot that we cleaned and baby powdered the left side of the engine. No leak from mounting bolt. Most likely bubbling is water in the passage for the mounting bolt boiling out and bubbles show in the oil that is leaking elsewhere. Got late so we had to stop. Good thing is the engine case is not cracked. We confirmed that.
I have the lad some homework of cleaning and tracing sources of oil leaks. Funny when he says "Hey, do you have a ______". He soon learned to change that to "Where is a______". (The young learn quickly!) The bike cave has most parts. Just one size of short stainless allen head screw I am low on.
Man, must be nice to have the world's largest part supplier in your back yard! :D
Haha I know right? And Adidas, I realized when looking for a pair of scissors to cut the electrical tape, that out of all those nice tools you have, all you have for scissors is a rust infested pair from the great depression :icon_mrgreen:
damn i cant figure out why hte gs of yours sits so low. all things being stock. w/o seeing a closeup of the pivot shaft and shock mounts etc. i can only guess. And right now my brqain is drawing a blank. But that being said, job well done thusfar. and yeah adidas is a hell of a nice guy i must admit.
Thanks man! Appreciate it. I'm going to fix the low rear end by getting some 6 11/16th dog bones from a website that gsjack suggested.
I finally decided to tackle the daunting task of replacing the terribly done jerry rigged scooter headlight. It was a real PITA! But I finally got it done with a little help from Adidas over the phone. Here are some pictures of the scooter headlight that she had on her:

It was oh so terribly sloppy... It had to be removed and replaced with the front section of this nice wiring harness I received from Adidas:
So, I decided to chop it right before it heads into the headlight bucket. Like so:
I then proceeded to strip the wires and began wondering what kind of mess I got myself into...
Long story short, I connected them all to the right place and now it works beautifully with a little help from Adidas!

Loving the new headlight! So much better than the stupid scooter headlight that never had a high beam, and now everything works
perfectly.
Heres a picture of the bike as it is now in black and white to show the true beauty! ;)

Well done :thumb: :thumb: :thumb:
Thank you kindly sir! :D
I am pleased at how many people have benefited from that pathetic, crappy parts bike. Gauge jewels, 89 clip-ons, left handlebar controls, and even the old wiring harness. I thought the wiring harness was destined for the trash until I saw Jacob's with the melted wires, scooter headlight and really bad tape job. High bean shorted out. Stuff not working.
Still have good rims and motor from that bike and the aluminum knuckle. Frame will become a coffee table outside the Bike Cave!
Interesting and fun - members of the West Seattle GS500 Club get free phone consultation!
Nice job Jake. Glad you got tro ride today. And is that correct on the trip meter: 84 miles since we put on the gauges I got from Rich? (Amazing how parts get recycled here!)
Maybe I am a parts whore/hoarder. Parts get handed out to any bike in need. (...and I don't make money either. I love to help get bikes fixed!)
Haha yes it is true! I ride everywhere I can when I have a working bike. However I did not get to go for a ride today, I will tomorrow most likely. I just figured out a temporary way I could rig up the tail tidy light you gave me. I tried it and it worked but I think I will hold off on that for now until I maybe put on that chopped fender you gave me with a little more choppage from me. :icon_lol:
Not to hijack the thread, but hey adidas- since you're just throwing parts around, what are the chances I could nab a front fender bolt and rear plastics rubber grommet from you?
Looks like the bike is making some real forward progress. Maybe you should just lower the front fork as well and put some spinners on it. :D
Hahaha. Nooo, it would have to be spokes and hydraulics if I did that.
Got my Suzuki decals and 2k clear coat. Ready to finish the paint job whenever I have a moment between ripping my 750 engine apart, the marine corps, and college.
Wait, Marine Corps? Are you a reservist or is there a secret base in Washington I don't know about? Igot stuck in f%$king NC lol
Haha that sucks. Its fort Lewis there is both active and reserve marines there. Very small group though.
You're one of those lucky devils...
Oohrah! Haha. Where you at? Lejuene? Cherry Point?
Found out my right fork is leaking from the seal... >:( If it's not one thing it's another, am I right? Anyways pretty sure its just a seal, so where does everyone get there seals/gaskets from?

Was waiting for you to chime in haha. How much are they? And how long does it take?

About a half hour. And another half hour to take them off and put them on. Do both.
I's say allow hour and a half start to finish to allow time for gossip and pizza.
Something like $8 or so for fork oil and I think it was like $30 or so for a pair of seals and dust caps. We can look up the prices. Those are new parts so you have to pay for them unless you bring beers and pizza or something to trade.
I have one new pack of Pyramid on the shelf. Must be good - they're Ausie parts.
Also have all the tools needed for fork seal replacement.
Hmmm, ok. I'm liking the pizza/beer idea but down for either. Should I replace both of the fork seals or just the side thats leaking? I was thinking of doing both but I feel like no need to fix it if its not broken.
If one is leaking - the other will leak soon.
Fork seals come in pairs. The time to remove the wheel to fix one fork: not much longer to fix the other.
Most of the time and trouble is taking things on and off the bike.
Do both.
I will NOT let you do just one. Period. End of story. Done. Kaput. Done. Finito. Finis. The end.
Sounds good. However; you said done twice my good man :icon_mrgreen:
One is American, the other is British English.
Hey guys, sorry its been forever since an update with pictures but progress has been rather slow with school and car breaking down and all of this crap happening... Anyways, I got as far as taking the decals off the fairings I got from patrick and the residue left over (which was a pain in the @$$!!). I have also sanded the purple one and will sand the black one shortly and then paint when I buy some more.
Decal black:

To get the decals off I just slowly peeled up the corners and slowlllllly peeled the decal away, using WD-40 when it was needed. This was not an easy task. You can also heat the decal with a hair dryer or some kind of heat device to make it a little more pliable.
After decal black:

I used goof off to get the decal residue off on these cause WD-40, rubbing alcohol, and some other stuff didnt seem to work. Only problem with goof off is the only way it seems to work is if it soaks into it, and that peels the paint off as well, like this:
Hopefully Ill be able to sand them and paint them sometime next week. I am also very busy with this 750 engine I'm completely tearing apart...
the perfect stuff for taking off the goo residue from the decal/sticker is Rubber Roller Cleaner. I've tried everything, (wd-40, goof-off, etc...)and nothing really works, but this stuff works awesome, the gunk just wipes off.
where can I get some of this magic goo remover?
Too late, but
Goof-Off
is
not
the
same
as
Goo-Gone
One takes of goo, the other dissolves everything - including plastic. Guess which is which!

it's called martin yale rubber roller cleaner and rejuvenator, it's in a white can with green letters. And you can get it at office depot and stores like that.

oh and I meant goo-gone lol. thanks
Oooooookkkkkaaaaayyyyyy...............
so what did you use that dissolved the paint? Goo-Gone won't do that - it is mostly an oil that dissolves glues. You had to have used something pretty powerful to farkle up the plastics. I've NEVER EVER had plastics do that unless I spilled MEK or touline on them - those melt plastic.
So when you stopping back at the bike cave?
We are planning a Vashon trip tomorrow (the 27th), well, at this late, it is today.
If it was indeed goo gone send those pics to the company that makes it. Some times you get lucky and the cover cost of repairs if indeed caused by the're product. I had a type glue remove take the clear off my truck, but they don't make that anymore. That does look like you used something that dissolves.
Yea I used goof off for that picture you saw with the bubbled paint. Nothing happened to the plastic, just the paint got stripped. For what its worth I have some goo gone now, and going to try it with the little amount of goo left. How was your guys ride today Patrick? Sorry I have been realllly busy. Just bought a brand new Kia Rio last weekend and I had to do some running around today, however; I did get to ride for like a minute...
Today was fantastic! We did so much. See the "What have you done..." thread. BrianRC will post more in the Quin thread later.
Nice i looked at some of the stuff you guys did. I rode quite a bit this weekend despite the rain. Bike acts weird sometimes, but i think she's just mad at me tank could use a good cleaning though I'm sure. Been working on my 750 engine, I split the cases and now it's time to install my spare crank shaft and put her all together. You have any plans for that muzzy exhaust or is it destined for the trash? I really want to make it over there though, what are you doing the Saturday before mothers day? So next next Saturday?
Muzzy has dibs from the ex500 forum.
I do have a complete Jardine system on the shelf (can't tell BrianRC where it is or he might snatch it when I'm not looking (http://i1206.photobucket.com/albums/bb442/adidasguy/Videos/sSc_hidingsofa.gif) (http://s1206.photobucket.com/user/adidasguy/media/Videos/sSc_hidingsofa.gif.html)
Those sound amazing, how much are you looking to get for it?
Once again sorry I haven't been active lately, this is what I have been doing. Basically just tearing down my xs750 engine to figure out whats wrong with it

Now its time to put it all back together and have my cafe racer back to life.
Fairings are all ready for paint, will paint/sand them and apply decals next week, but then I will have to finish the tank in order to apply a the clear coat and finally be finished with the paint.
Put 4 or so coats on the fairings and will be sanding them and figuring out how I want to orientate the decals. Then next week I will be painting the gas tank and decaling and then clear coating everything and sanding polishing then be done with it!! :)

By the way I have decided to buy a Katana shock, both for the apparent lift and the stiffness. The shock plus the links I got to raise the bike an inch should get it back to stock height. I will be getting some new fork springs when money isn't so tight so that the whole bike is stiff not just the rear.
I'm wondering how the Trail Tech X2 Headlight would look on the GS. Its really bright and works well according to some videos I saw on youtube.
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Trail-Tech-X2-70W-Motocross-Lights-Black-/00/s/MzIzWDMwMA==/z/H7UAAMXQwKdRfp0i/$(KGrHqJ,!qYFEyUIR!9yBRfp0ir!pg~~60_12.JPG)
When it comes to thing like that it only matter if you like it. I have seen it on dirt bikes and looked good, never on a gs500 though.
Yea that's true. I feel like because its been on dirtbikes all the time its always classified as a dirtbike thing, so it would look weird. Plus its like 200 dollars.
Put the decals on the fairings and the front fender. Waiting for gas tank to do clear coat. What do you guys think?

Im not so sure I like the Suzuki S placements right now... But theres no changing it now... I can live with it.
Probably OK but I really can't say until it shows up at the Bike Cave.
One day... Oneeee day. Haha. Busy this weekend and the two weekends after that but maybe then I can come over lol
Hey guys, little bit of an update, nothing real exciting. Some kind of crappy stuff though.
So what I originally thought was a bubble in the paint due to rust was actually a weld job on the gas tank deeply covered by bondo. The bubble was from gas fumes seeping out of the weld I am lead to think now. Heres what it looks like:
My solution after being frustrated is to spread some JB weld on it covering up the area where the bubble was and then bondo and sand and paint and be done with it. The other two scraped spots are actually where rust was. These will be fixed with rust-o-mort a good rust dissolver :)
One other update is that I disassembled and cleaned my petcock today and bought some CLR in preperation for cleaning the gas tank.
Looks pretty nice, and I got a pretty decent chunk of gunk out of there as well. I wont have access to bondo, jb weld, or the acid dissolver till this weekend, so paint will have to wait till then. But I think I will clean it and sand it in the mean time.
The spot welds look like from a spot weld dent puller. They tried to pull out a dent and gave up or dud what they could then bondo'd over it.
You can use metal body filler to repair it better. Eastwood has different metal fillers for doing repairs that last. Probabkly kits available elsewhere and of different types and prices.
So, today I finally did something with the fender I got from Adidasguy. I did so because it was so much cleaner than my other fender. I never liked the little stub thats left after most peoples fender elimination so I delt with that problem with a band saw. Here are some pictures:
I will be using the side reflector stems for the blinkers, rotating them up and drilling a new hole (confusing I know, but soon it will all make sense). The little bucket will have the license plate directly bolted onto it with the tail tidy light that Adidas gave me (gotta put it to use!) above it.
What you need is one of these. It is an actual fender eliminator for a GS500. Holds license plate and turn signals.
Then, that would mean you'd have to come to the Bike Cave and we understand that can be a bit difficult to do :icon_rolleyes:
Yea, those would be nice, but I want it to be tucked up and out of the way and those look bulky haha. But maybe I'll rig the blinkers up just temporarily until I can head over and see how it looks or whatever.
Today I fixed my low problem and did my fender elimination. Enough chat, time for pictures,
Some people think the Katana shock is the same size as the stock shock, but you can see here its a little bit longer, not by much though.

Overall I love the Katana shock, it plus the links I put in raised the rear pretty much back to stock. The shock is almost on setting 4 out of 7 and it barely budges when I and a partner sit on it. Excellent swap and I would recommend it for anyone that wants to swap shocks. Cant wait to get some .9 sonic fork springs to balance the bike.
hey if you ever get lost in the woods take that heel guard with you to signal the choppers!
looks good.
You must be thinking the light from the heat lamp is the reflection on the heel guard my friend haha. And thanks! It's definitely a well needed upgrade.
ah you are correct. Amazing what happens when you look at pictures on a phone... I see the lamp now. I am thinking man that thing must be polished to a super smooth pure silver to catch that much light. I really like the taillights its turning out well.
Haha thats funny. I loled :icon_lol:
By the way your exhaust sounds nice! lol
I just bought the same shock (2004 Katana) off eBay and rebuilt my forks with .85 Sonic springs with 15w fork oil. It handles like a VERY different bike. You'll be amazed at how much better the bike stops when you're not smacking your knuckles on the asphalt every time you tap the front brake.
Haha yea, I have yet to buy some fork springs but soon I will. I really love the feel of the katana shock, so much stiffer and less sag. When I first took it off the center stand I was suprised because the pogo was completely gone hahaha...
Hey guys, quick update,
Put some JB weld over the spot that I figured was a weld job gone bad (havent looked for sure) but it doesnt really matter cause I will be covering the JB weld with bondo anyways. Also I applied acid to the rust spots under the paint on the top of the tank.
Sanded the whole tank and got rid of the ugly pin stripes then primered the exposed metal and spots that needed some touch up work and did the touch up work.
I also bead blasted and scotch brited the gas cap
(http://i1329.photobucket.com/albums/w549/Jaco20sikkness/IMG_20130523_152839_zpsb8c88503.jpg)
My original thought was to paint the whole thing black, but now I am thinking to just clear coat it cause the paint could chip and not look good. What do you guys think? The plain aluminum could be a cool touch on a black tank.
I painted the center black and left the outer ring aluminum. I just wire wheeled it to make it look a little cleaner. If you're planning on leaving it I would hit it with some fine grade paper to clean up the scratches or at least scuff it all in one direction.
The gas flap is supposed to be the same as the rest but I think I forgot to flip it over and paint it before I reassembled to ride. I have just been too lazy to take it all apart since then. It has chipped a little since then but just small dings that aren't noticeable.
(http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t394/amkluttz0819/BikePaint.jpg) (http://s1057.photobucket.com/user/amkluttz0819/media/BikePaint.jpg.html)
Yea that's how it was at first, but the guy painted bad as always and it was chipping. Those scratches are super deep but I was thinking about trying sand paper too, that's a good idea. I love the rear of your bike btw haha
Cleaned the whole bike and cleaned/lubed the chain last weekend just havent been able to get near it, and wont be able to until next weekend. Anyways, I liked these pictures so I thought I might as well throw them up on here.

Finally got the tank painted. It still has some of its battle scars faintly visible but I don't really care about those too much, builds character.

Next will be wet sand after the paint cures overnight and decals then clear coat, then sand and polish :( Haha...
Then and then, and... the time it sometimes takes to do things right, but its worth it in the end. looking good!
Haha true my friend... Speaking of, i just had to take the valves out of my seven fifty again after re seating them and put oil seals on that i didn't know were coming with the gasket kit i bought. Total pain in the rear but was with it.
And thanks! Can't wait to clear coat everything and get it back on the bike.
just noticed the scion! I have two MKII supras in the garage amid prolonged transplants.. see the projects can get back shelved for some time...believe me i know. I have moved through so many other vehicles and about 6-7 bikes in the last 5 year's and haven't touched my project cars. 4 stall garage and we park our daily drivers outside... there's just no room with the 2 bikes and quad and my two supras.. one day I will either sell em or get back to business. so keep on it, they are easy to get distracted and forget.
Well talk about forgotten projects... Heres my 65 Mustang I havent touched for four years... Cant wait till I have my own garage to work on it some more, it was really beat up when we got it. This is what it looks like presently:
Anyways, here is my gas tank. I was wet sanding it this morning and it was going perfectly fine until I pulled it out of the sink and gouged the knee pad area with the faucet and made a hole in the paint down to primer... Anyways, despite that I repainted and put the decals on where I could and will be wet sanding the new painted areas tomorrow morning and hopefully applying clear coat... I also messed up and got an air bubble in the suzuki s on the other side of the tank. I will attempt to fix this tonight with a heat gun thing.

crikey .. i must have missed a bit somewhere ...
750 triple pot!! .. thats gonna sound sweeeeeet! :D :thumb: :icon_twisted:
Indeed my friend. It sounded so nice and I cant wait to hear it again!
its the triple sound that got me hooked on the Trumpy Street Triple .. that i want for a 'second' bike .. well 3rd if you count the still non running cr250 :icon_rolleyes:
just little things like ... anywhere near enough $$ and clearing it with the missus have gotten in the way ..
does your triple have that same kind of 'gear cam/induction whistle/sharp growl' to it?? ..
i assume you familiar with the triumph STR sound.. but i'll do a mini 'jack and link a vid :D .. the exhaust is a bit blurty on this one .. but i love the idle sound and other engine sound
now i gotta look up a vid to check the yamaha sound.. just cos i am impatient :thumb:
Haha my old 78 cafe racer does not have that little hiss, thats more of just a triumph 675 thing, this is what mine sounds like,
Skip to the start up lol
schmick!! .. a little 'industrial/rural' .. but Old School!!! :thumb:
Haha thats not mine, but maybe once I get the motor back in I will post a sound clip of it. Heres a picture of my xs750:

I did that paint job as well lol. This was after the engine got messed up... :(
Liking the look of that! Orange was not even on my radar but I have got a lot of compliments on mine and I really do like it against black or dark grey.
I really wanted to wait until I cleaned my gas tank to post these pictures, but I cant wait! Here you go:

Still needs to be sanded and waxed, but I really love the outcome :)
Just my opinion .....but....I liked it before!
Before it looked different and good, now it just looks like every other GS on the road today :dunno_black:
Looks minty fresh eh....
And that first side on shot from across the road with the slope behind it .... I know it's the proper bike and all... From the other shots....
But ... That photo ... Looks like a scale model bike photo .... :) ... Maybe the focal point or just the lighting. ... But it does!! ... Tricksy!! :thumb:

Haha yea, i just liked how it looked from across the street. You should have seen the original before i cropped it and edited with instagram.
Very nice bike man! :thumb:Hey where did you get those tail lights
Hey thanks!
Those tail lights are from a 99 YZFR1, direct bolt on, if not just drill two holes and fit it perfectly. Great upgrade. There is also clear, smoked, and integrated that others on the board have used.

Exactly. Looks like a miniature or model. Crazy pic.
Soooo, you guys like that picture? :D
Ride about 100 miles today, cleaned the tank last night, got a little dent in it from dropping it onto the stools :( i bought an inline fuel filter fir the on and reserve line because it was sluggish in the low rpms, i imagine left over gunk going to the carbs. . I'll put those on tomorrow.

... ooooh .... now you gone done it!! .. prepare for 'the reasoning/s' ;) :thumb:
Hahaha i was going to say something about that but i forgot. I know, i don't think they're all that harmful though... My light for my blinker blew out i believe, so i will be purchasing a new one tomorrow
So I cleaned the tank with CLR and BB's from a BB gun. What a pain in the ass... It did a pretty good job but I don't know if I would recommend it considering how much of a hassle it was. Here are some before and after pictures, still kinda rusty but its nothing that will get up and move around like before.

I didn't realize that the bump in that the tank pet chicken sits on would create a block so the BBs would no longer be easy to get out... So this is the method I used, I taped a rope to a large square magnet and then taped a small flash light onto the rope and guided it around to pick up the BBs that were in the tank... Such a pain.. I poured like 1000 in there lol.

Keep in mind I only swapped the CLR out and swashed BBs around twice.. I should have done it more but it was such a hassle and the tank was getting beaten up with my brand new paint job so I didnt want to do it any more. I actually dropped it onto some stools and got a decent dent right next to the decal on the left side...
So in the mean time I decided to put some fuel filters in the line because it will stop the left over residue from getting to the carbs. This will probably only be a temporary fix.
I put some Oreillys carb cleaner fuel additive into the tank and ran it through and also sprayed some carb cleaner into the carbs through the drain hole and watched some black gunky stuff come out. Seems to run much smoother, except I still have a High floating Idle from time to time when it gets really hot.

Went over to Patrick's today, met Brian for the first time and did some work on my bike.
First things first I replaced the supposed stock springs with sonic .90 kg/mm springs and my my my what a difference.
It feels like I am gently floating on the ground, not riding :) Until I hit a bumb and then the Kat rear shock and .90s do a number to me, but its still amazing... such a huge improvement, feels like a brand new bike. The "stock" springs were actually progressives, the dumb PO at some point put some in and forgot to put a spacer in. Wouldn't you wonder why you didnt feel much of an improvement from stock if you bought progressives?? Haha...
A good way to explain the new suspension my bike has gotten is like before it was like a pug, cute and pudgy and fluffy, now its like a pit bull, stiff muscular and mean. :) that pretty much sums it up
Not only did I replace the springs but we also got some new seals going on cause mine were leaking badly.
Next I drained, replaced filter, and changed the oil. Used three qts exactly and it filled it up perfectly. But before I put the oil back in I changed the push rod oil seal, which is where I believed my oil leak was coming from.
I rode it all the way to my girlfriends, checked oil level again was still perfect and then rode home and i put the bike on the center stand and put a paper towel in a box under it to see if the leak was gone and for a while it was fine, then one single drop leaked. So I dont know whats going on.
Might need more gasket sealant? Or might just be a little bit of left over residue?
I put my sonic springs stickers (decals) on today and cleaned the bike up, they are pretty nice looking. And for those of you like me who want to see the stickers before they come in the mail, heres some pictures. If you dont understand how to get the stickers, its like the final page of the ordering process, there is a little box that you check for either white or black free stickers. Comes with two!

Hey guys, so bike was running perfectly last night until I got to the last stop sign before my street. When i puked in the clutch idle was at 3k, turned the screw down it dropped to soften and slowly to 1k and felt like it was gunna die so i adjusted the idle screw back up and out didn't raise the idle at all no matter how many turns i gave it. I parked the bike left out running to listen to it and it sounded boggy idling around 1500 and had very sluggish low end throttle..
I killed it, brought it in, and then it smelt like gas and motor was burning something off the surface cause i could hear the sizzling. I looked and the tips of the head under the valve cover gaskets were wet. Fuel lines wee all still connected and did not seem to be leaking. Haven't tried to start it since. I was thinking just maybe fuel delivery problems again?
Look for any leaks. Could the tank be leaking?
Dry things off. Fill it up with gas.
Dry off again and look for any signs of leaks.
Fuel delivery problem would not be no fuel - it sounds like fuel leaks.
How much gas in the tank now?
Gas in the air box? If so, that would be stuck floats and it is flooding out, spilling gas all over the place.

I looked for leaks, no gasoline leaks.
Lots of gas in the tank, no gas in the air filter unless it evaporated in the little time it took me to take the tank off.
Air filter was dry but its super dirty:
This was the only leak I could found and I thought, what could this possibly be coming from?
So I took the tank off and found this (bottom of the tank was dry):
Oil coming from the crank case breather cover. This piece was broken when I got the bike so decided to temporarily fix it and never got around to fixing it for good cause I didnt have any problems. Could this be my problem? I figure the oil leaking out is from the new stiff suspension rattling everything loose.
I also found out there was a bunch of gunk in the inline fuel filters. Both filters had this brown gunk.
I decided to put the battery back on and start it up, started right up, idled normally and rpms came right back down after revving no floating. This was just with the left over gas in the carbs, so I think with some new fuel lines (no filters) and a new crank case breather cover. You guys think this will fix it? Thats my best bet.
Fix that and it will greatly improve things.
To check for gas in the air box, remove the air filter and look in. You can see the bottom where it drains and see if gas is coming out of the intake of the carbs.
So, i got a crank case breather cover, gasket and air filter from Adidas a couple days back and i took the old piece of crap breather off and i saw what i believe to be a cardboard gasket... Its a pain inn the ass to get off and tomorrow I'm leaving for a few weeks to train. Also i found a small pool of gasoline where I left my tank because the reserve line is slowly dripping. Any thoughts?
Fitting in the tank petcock loose? Tap the brass tubes back in with a mallet.
Or is it leaking from the tank petcock shut off valve? Seen that. The o-ring gets dry and cracks if it hasn't been turned for a longtime. Replace o-ring. You may have to drain gas to take tank off, remove metal clip and take out valve thingy to replace the o-ring.
Or loose hose connection. Seen that, too.
Many colours!
I fixed the crank case breather and removed all the old gasket and replaced it. Went very well. Surprisingly my oil leak is fixed now! not a single drop all day!
I also replaced the two fuel filters, cleaned the hoses and the airbox hose with carb cleaner. At first I was going pretty dang fast and I ran all of the fuel out of the carbs and the filters were too much resistance to the flow and couldnt fill the float bowls. Started running weird and died, but then I ran it on prime to fill it up and rode like a grandma the rest of the day. Rode real well.
Rode to the Kirkland waterfront with the girlfriend. An awesome day today!! Cant wait to start riding to work again! yesss.
Okay, I suppose I spoke too soon... When i got home last night, the bike was smelling like gasoline. I look down and sure enough the left carb was over flowing and leaking out. I drained the bowls, sprayed some carb cleaner in there, and called it a night. got up in the morning to try and ride to work, put the choke on full, primed it for a little, started it, and it was just sitting at 1500 ~ 2200 on full choke. The throttle was sluggish. Does this sound like a problem that could be fixed by cleaning the carbs?
Cleaned the carbs, dislodged a bunch of crap from the main fuel line that goes from the petck to the carbs. Rejetted back to stock jets 122.5, installed the new air filter. It runs so much better!
I also cleaned it and lubed the chain and went for a tiny ride to test out the new jet settings and cleaned carbs.

Quick update,
Installed the clip ons I bought from Patrick. They are awesome. Brings the front down a little from the stock replica bars I had and with the help of my new links I will have a totally different riding position. Also, I will be going to pick up the full Jardine after work from Patrick.

Turning seems to be more instantaneous than before and they are quite comfortable.
Most of you probably already heard the news. My bike has been hit and totaled.
The only damage actually keeping me off the road is:
- Forks
- Fender (dont need one)
- 1 clip on bar
- brake caliper
- brake pads
- and the piece that holds the clutch lever on
I just saw a full set of gsxr forks with calipers and brake lever come up on craigslist for $225. I have always wanted to do it and the people here at the shop tell me they can press the bearings in and I am sure they can make the spacer.
My question to you guys is do you think it is worth it? or should I just replace the forks with some oem ones?
Stay safe,
Jake
By the way,
Here is how the Jardine sounded the day before. So nice!
Sound quality is from my phone so please forgive me
So I tried looking at the exhaust today, and couldnt really find anything that would make it sound like this. Keep in mind the choke is pretty much on full. I dont know cause I dismantled all the left hand control and didnt feel like warming it up to let it idle.
Sound quality is a little bad but it sounds somewhat close to having no headers installed.
Here are some things I found that could be the culprit,
Loose header bolt?
Pretty substantial dent in headers? (IMO least likely)
Or a tear in the heat shield of the can?
I will probably take it to a shop to have them shorten the can up to where the Jardine sticker is, IMO it looks better and could possibly fix a part of the problem.
What do you guys think?
Stay safe,
Jake
Loose header bolt can cause that. Most likely when the exhaust system took a hit, the mounting bracket on that side got bent so it is now loose. Remove the exhause... put in new gaskets.... and re-attach.
If you suspect a tear in the can, put some aluminum furnace tape over that to seal it and see if that helps.
With your ear, you should be able to tell where sound is coming from.
Yeah, my vote is on the actual header bolt area. As addy suggested, I bet you need fresh gaskets in there. If you had a blow to the header, that could have smashed the gasket down and gave you a gap.
- Bboy
The gaskets seemed to be fine, right was a little more crushed than the left which was expected. I think the real culprit here is the fact that the whole left side of the header got really bent.
Couple options.
1. Examine it and compare the ends on a flat surface. If both are level or really close, you should be able to make it fit but may have to put in 2 or 3 crush washers so it can squish down at that slight mis-alignment and make a good seal
2. Might get a muffler company to straighten it
3. Jardine is back in production. Contact them for a replacement part.
Bring it over and we can look at it. There are spare engines here that we can check the fit on.
Hey! Bringing it back from death, just to let you guys know I ended up selling the bike to this kid and his dad, for the kids first bike, was really cool, hope he makes it over to Patricks this summer. I fixed the bike up back to even better condition then it was before selling, heres some pictures of her final hours.

I started the CBR build thread here too after a while of having the CBR
I miss my GS from time to time, but when I ride my CBR I pretty much forget about it :P Girlfriend doesnt though.
I just sold my GS as well and "upgraded" (I know that's a matter of opinion) to a '98 Buell Cyclone. Definitely a bittersweet moment after all the blood, sweat and tears we put into them. Enjoy the CBR!
Nice to hear from you spartacus! Got any pictures of it?
I sold the GS about 6 months ago haha, been upgrading the CBR non stop since then haha

I had a demo ride on a Cyclone at the Honda Hoot near Knoxville back on 01, about an hour mix of both freeway and back roads. It was all torque and vibrated so much you could hardly see the turn signals at idle but smoothed out at 2k and ran smooth to 3k where the vibes picked up again, but it sure was sweet and powerful from 2-3k. I'd call it an upgrade. :thumb: Made the trip on my 97 GS500 going over the Dragon and up the Blue Ridge Pkwy going home to NE Ohio following son JP on his GS1100E.
Jacob, here's a pic the day I picked her up. Since then I've performed a "fenderectomy" like I did on my GS. I had to tear the front rocker box apart to put in new gaskets, cleaned the carb and rejetted it (previous owner left stock jets in after adding K&N intake and Vance & Hines pipes- it barely ran the fuel mixture was so lean). Runs great now. Also adding bar end mirrors and the '99 top plate and dash so I can add the matching tach. Some ohter minor things I'll tinker with, but right now just enjoying the ride. Pure American muscle. :icon_mrgreen:

Jack, yeah, she vibrates. Not THAT bad, but it is definitely a whole different animal than the GS (or any other Japanese bike for that matter). The biggest difference for me is the clutch and shifter. Takes much more strength/force to disengage the clutch- my left hand is getting quite the workout. But I've only had it a few days, so hopefully I'll adapt.
I was afraid the jump up in power would be too abrupt and scary (GS: 45HP/30FT-LBS compared to Cyclone: 85HP/80FT-LBS), but the Buell's power is pretty linear and very manageable. I was almost dissapointed, lol. Almost. ;)
Man that is nice looking!! I was interested in the firebolts way back... All buells sound pretty amazing! The cbr is crazy.... 105rhp if it were completely stock lolol. I don't know what it is now. its pretty surprising every time. Gunna be taking it to the track soon.
Glad you are enjoying your new ride though!
