Title: West Seattle Bike Builds #2 & 3: the UW Husky Bike and "Frank"
Post by: adidasguy on March 16, 2013, 12:01:08 AM
Well, it is official. Time to start another bike build.

This one will be custom painted in a University Washington purple/gold theme with Husky dogs (I wish it were cats!)

Tonight I met with the painter. He does custom painting of hydro boats, helmets, bikes, RC cars and more. Here is a link to his work:

https://www.facebook.com/WesesDesign/photos_stream
http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.394379783970895.90546.394367780638762&type=3

So with that meeting the project has officially begun.

Painting will start in 2 months. Until then, I have the daunting task of going through all my parts to gather up everything needed for a bike. It will have a TCP "E" fairing. Member Piresito is collecting parts from German sellers and will ship them to me. Most of what he is collecting will go on this bike.

After painting, it will be 4 to 6 weeks to assemble the bike.
And everything will be painted:
* Frame
* Wheels
* "E" cowling
* Tank
* Gimbel rear solo seat
* Airbrush's Rear Hugger
* SS Chain guard
* Gauge bracket
* Euro type-1 handle bars

As this will be a show bike, I will need every part in pristine condition. However, Wes said he never gets to see his work on the street (he does show bikes) and really wants me to NOT hide it like a show piece. I assured him that Husky will be ridden often so everyone can admire his work. She will be babied, but I will ride her often.

I think this will be the most expensive GS500 ever built. Definitely the most unique, most beautiful GS500 ever. The painting alone will be the price of a GS500. add Gimbel seat,  Gimbel rear sets, a rare TCP fairing shipped from Europe and, well, you get the idea.

Updates will come as I gather parts. I'll be making a list of what it takes to build a GS500. I need a check list! Along with this I'll be assembling a "junker" just for the purpose of testing engines and carbs. So really, I'll be putting together 2 or 3 GS500's this year.

I wanted to announce the start of this project. That makes it official.  :woohoo:

Ordered the Gimbel rear sets and seat. Seat is "best offer" so I got a discount.
Waiting on the EX500 before ordering brake light and turn signal lenses. I plan to order for that bike at the same time and save on shipping. Slim chance the EX500 engine is bad, but still will wait a couple days to find out so I don't order stuff for a bike  that will be parted out.

Motad muffler ordered today.
I like it on Phenix. I do not like loud mufflers - which seem to be he only after market mufflers available here in the USA. Before ordering I asked about a price for 2 of them: one for Husky and one for the EX500 (to replace a LOUD mussy exhaust). Seems I'm getting 2 without VAT for not much more than the price for one at ebay prices. It never hurts to ask for a better price.

Parts came in today! Some much needed parts for the fairing and stuff for other projects.
Fairing panel and wind shield for "E" fairing.
Rare TCP/FiveStars headlight cowling
Red/Pink tail to match other side (NOS) and tank(NOS) this part is almost NOS.
Couple needed fairing inner pieces.
Euro type 1 clip on set

Thanks to Piresito for sending them to me. Some sellers will not ship to the USA. He took care of that! Kudos and a big bag of Karma Korn

All parts are now in hand (as of last week). Full "E" fairing and all plastics.
Next step is to remove decals from some of them so they are ready for painting.
Also have to clean the frame.
Wheels are clean - new old stock so they are ready to go.

We only have 5 of them. Not sure if there is a spare  :flipoff: :flipoff: :flipoff:
You're a parts whore and you're closer to Germany - can't you just drive over and get one? Google maps had drive to NYC, swim the ocean and continue on in France.

(Well, maybe. But it would be one that needs to be re-painted.)

Getting back on track. The painter will pick up parts next week.
Right now gathering up everything. Also going to gather parts for a second bike build. Something to do while he paints to be sure I have all parts for assembly.

Kind of means that while organizing for 2 or 3 bike builds, I have to allocate parts for them, limiting parts availability from me.

Finding I'm short of Euro type-1 clip-on raisers. Might be low on forks but ordering more seals to complete rebuilding sets of forks.

Decided to use the blue parts that were on Trey. Good shape and minimal decals to remove for painting. (only the tank). TCP fairing. Probably a 2001 engine. 2006+ wiring and hand controls. Probably 2004+ carbs, too.

Gathering up all the parts....,.

I really like the "E" style faring that you have there, i wish the newer "F" style would have went with the twin headlights. No wonder you haven't gotten back to me, you have been a busy boy with a build.

I'm building 2 bikes in tandem.

While the Hunky parts are out for painting, I will build a second bike. Think of that as a dry run for the Hunky bike. For every part I put on the 2nd bike, I will put one in the box for the Husky bike.

When the parts come back from the painter, I will have EVERY part in a box ready to assemble. (The reason for a dry run?). Time will be limited to get Husky assembled. With the $3000+ paint job, I don't want to have to take anything apart once it goes together. With everything in a box, it should take at most 4 days to assemble the bike. Less time if people come over to help. (Especially ones that help with the dry-run build.)

All frames now have license plates.
Husky will be an older frame and will be painted gold.
Bike #2 will be on a 2006 frame from Maryland. New 2007 tank, probably the 2006 engine (Husky will get the 2001 motor). New tires, black rims, maybe clip-ons or stock bars (I'm really low on Euro-type-1 clips).

Getting things ready. Wes, the painter, will be over tomorrow to pick up parts for Husky. While that gets painted, the 2006 frame with the new 2007 tank will get built.
Probably will build a 3rd bike while we're at it. (I might be short a few parts to do 3 complete bikes).

Oh, and the final design will be kept secret until completed in about 2 months. Photos of the assembly will be "redacted"
so the final design will be unveiled in a first ride ceremony.

All the parts for the Husky bike got picked up by Wes. We saw color samples. Jmill and bluesmudge (UW graduates) were here to approve colors.

Started building the second bike. It doesn't have a name yet. Got swing arm and wheels on. The left fork is bent ever so slightly. We discovered that when the front wheel would not go on. It will get replaced tomorrow. It might be on the road next weekend. 2 weeks at most. It will be sold when finished. jmill has first dibs on this bike.

I will be working evenings this week. Then all day Saturday.
I am confident that this bike will be on the road the 24th. maybe sooner. The more that come over, the faster it will get done.
The cool thing is each person has their own area of expertise. We can divide up the work so one person does electrical while one does brakes while one does the engine.
It would be fantastic if the bike ran this weekend. I KNOW I will have power on it and the wiring harness in. I have sets of 2006+ carbs from running bikes so we should be OK to just do a quick look and clean then pop them on. No rebuilding necessary.

Usual Sat & Sun: about 10 Sat and 10:30 Sun (after Farmer's Market)
Evenings will  be like 8:30 to midnight.
Friday MIGHT start after work at about 6 or 6:30.

Your forks ok now? I assume the front brake is settling in. Exhaust now sound better?

It is amazing the pile of "B" quality parts accumulating. as we upgrade everyone's bikes, the "B" parts are piling up. and I guess I'm getting really picky about parts for the bike builds. On ebay now buying some 2009 parts because everything for the Husky bike must be absolutely perfect. and un-named bike #2 I'm just gettig picky and take too much pride in the builds to use "B' quality parts. Though they are all usable, not good enough for me.

Must be 3 exhausts or 4. Fork tubes (maybe we can straighten the ones with 1/8" bend), brake calipers and other stuff.

okay that sounds good. Front fork seals are good now. not a single drop of oil. the front disc still make a slight sound when in motion. i thought i had aligned them perfectly but in retrospect i should have known it would not be perfect because they are diff parts than the original bike. I will wait out the sound to disappear one day. i have not seen in degradation on the disc brakes, rotor in the mean time.

Post by: adidasguy on August 12, 2013, 10:28:37 PM
Your brakes will wear in in a week or two of riding. With different forks, the pads are not touching the rotor exactly as before. Remember there is nothing to separate the pads. We don't have return springs. Pads will always be slightly touching the rotor

Remember when the brake is off and the brake lever gets touched? The pads go in but they don't go back out without a lot of effort. Remember the effort to spread the pads to get them back on? That's because nothing separates them.

So just be patient. Your brakes are fine and the rubbing will diminish as the pads wear to their new position on the rotor.

Glad the new forks are good.

A little progress on bike #2 tonight. Foot pegs, side stand and rear brake.
We will bleed the brakes when the front is on tomorrow. Now that handle bars are on, there is a place to mount  the front brake.

Brian came over for a while and we made some good progress.
Wiring harness starts going on tomorrow. Looks like full power will be on at the end of Friday's wrench session.
Not sure, but if a few came over Saturday and we busted our butts, this bike could be on the road Saturday evening.

Yep - it is going to get a FiveStars rear carrier.

That bike "Phenix" has been on the road since April 2012.

We need a name for this latest build. One suggestion was "Frank" because it is a Frankenstein bike (like Phenix) make up from parts of lots of bikes and covering 1989-2012.

One minor setback: I may not have a good front master cylinder. One doesn't pump (might just be full of crud). One is stuck and the 3rd at the moment is unknown, but not very pretty. I have more ordered. I'm hoping one of the guys can take them and make one that works (until the 2009 used ones come in) so the bike is ride-able should we get the motor in come Saturday.

New bikes don't look exactly like what we build. We make them better! Even Suzi has had some serious upgrades from stock.

You can build one!

Or do a serious make-over. Look at Junior: total make-over. 2 other notable make-overs are Audry (sold to BrianRC and formerly called Quin) and Dora (sold to Nortwestrider and formerly known as Trey)

After we build these 2 bikes you'll be an expert - ready to assemble your own bike. Easier than assembling an Ikea entertainment center!

Well, I have decisions to make.

Wednesday is Backfire Moto. It would be great to ride Frank there and have pictures and info showing that Frank was put together in under a week.

Then, I got shipping notice on the pressure switch banjo bolt for the rear brake, new front master cylinders and some other parts.

So it is a choice of get on the road if possible and be running to take him to Backfire Moto, or take it easy and NOT take to Backfire Moto. because if I take it easy, I won't have to re-bleed the brakes after changing to new banjo switch and newer front MS. Though re-bleeding brakes is no big deal. I have a new set of tail plastic coming in, too.

Oh, well. I'll just have to see how things go this weekend. Tonight I'll start stringing the wiring harness and put power on it to be sure it is a good one.

Got some wiring on: side stand switch, assorted cable and wire brackets. Started stringing the wiring harness.

Tested one master cylinder. Seems it may have been lazy. I put my finger over the banjo bolt hole. Pumped and could feel air pressure. The fluid squirted out all over me. I think it will work. Clean brake fluid and it should be good.

So Friday night the sole task is get all wiring and electrical finished so Saturday can be devoted exclusively to the motor.

Plan is for the 2006 engine with the splashes of green monster paint and the oil cooler.
I should have electrical finished tonight.

Parts came in today: Complete 2008 front end (forks & triples) with key,  box-o-parts from Weed, 5 sets fork seals. Forks will be for Husky and probably the rest of the front end. Real clean!

.....and thanks to Bluesmudge for hooking up the sound system in the Cave last weekend.

Wiring tonight. Tomorrow we begin the engine work.

Wiring finished. All works! Shorai battery in and everything checks out. All lights working. Gauge lights LEDs and dual-diode mod made to the gauge indicator harness.
Added a "Back-Off" brake light unit.
BrianRC worked on the motor. Looks pretty good. Opened it up. Head looks nice inside. Opened up clutch side. Removed clutch plates and cleaned them in kerosene then put them back in. Motor ready for oil, valve adjustment and installation.

Update: Carb issues.
Pulled cleanest set of carbs of the shelf. Tested float levels on the bench. Both sides dumped gas out of everywhere. Adjusted. Now no gas. Adjusted. Now one side dumps other side none. Moved parts around. Now a gusher of gas even when it appears floats have to shut off the gas.

I gave up and ordered a carb rebuilt kit.

Pulled another set of carbs off the shelf. Checked float levels. A little high. adjusted. Better. Adjusted again. Looks good! Will blow cleaner through all passages tonight then put them on.

First set will get rebuilt kits because something is just plain wrong with the float needles.

Christmas came early today.

1 more complete 2008 front fork assembly
3 front brake master cylinders
1 MS rebuild kit
3 pressure rear brake switches / banjo bolt
2 fork brake line brackets (thank you fleshpiston  :cheers: )
1 box-o-bolts from weed (came last Friday) Thank you!

Making a list of parts needed to complete a few bikes.
Seems I can't find any clutch switches (I know I should have a few somewhere). Low on certain sizes of stainless steel screws. Needed more perfect clutch perches (found on flea-ghey). Since Wednesday is Backfire Moto, I'll hit my dealer first and drop off a list of parts. Need a couple rear fenders (did you know NEW is only about $42!?!?!) New looks so much better than used.

....and 2 Roaring Toyz gas caps came in, too.

It was quite a crew - sometimes 3 or 4 people working on different parts of the bike at the same time. Just like a racing pit crew!

And that was a rehearsal for the Husky Bike assembly  :icon_lol:

Today's report:

Slight oil leak on left side. A few drips.
Fussy when cold: wants to die with throttle until warmed up for 30 seconds.
Have to tie up some wires and install the seat lock.
I guess a couple minor problems are not unusual.
We never ran the motor before. I was told it was good. Valves were checked before installation.
Carbs had floats adjusted but not a thorough cleaning. Some SeaFoam this week and fresh gas.
Next weekend the little things will be dealt with.

The motor, carbs and electrical system were never together before. Fantastic he started right up!

I guess I'll go ride him a little and put some fresh gas in.

Christopher got a deep indoctrination into the club. New member - He came over only for a blue cap. Went home with that, 6 LEDs and a SS chain guard. And he helped build a bike! How cool is that?

Put in 5.1 gallons of gas. That might fix the cold starting issue: needed gas?
It helps to tighten the bolts on the front caliper.
Rode 20 miles. Frank is fun to ride. The wide handle bars make him feel more like a dual sport.
Rear brake needs re-bleeding.
Tightened a left side case bolt where the leak was so maybe that will fix it.
He runs best of all my bikes. It must be that group effort that makes him so good.

Title: Re: West Seattle Bike Builds #2 & 3: the UW Husky Bike and "Frank"
Post by: adidasguy on August 25, 2013, 10:03:04 PM
We will do twisties any upcoming weekend The tires (tyres for the Brits and Ausies) need to wear a little.
I'll be riding Frank a lot this week.

Carbs: Most likely one float is high or one needle a little dirty. Still has issues starting after sitting a long time. Almost like initially running on one cylinder until excess gas gets sucked out of the other one.

I will check air box for gas tomorrow. Also will check float heights. A can of SeaFoam is in order. The carbs have been on my shelf for well over a year. It might be wise to replace the floats.

Since he runs fine once running, I don't think any jets are dirty.

Once running, he's just fine. And just fine starting up again. Seems a few hours sitting are needed before the problem comes on.

Here's how it works:

Start bike. Throttle will kill it.
Runs slow so turn on choke.
He will run about 3k RPM but any throttle kills him.
Run for 30 seconds or so. Throttle will kill. However, taking choke off now throttle is OK and you can ride off with no issues.

So I'm kind of thinking one carb slowly floods while sitting. Initially running with choke lets one cylinder run while the other side is getting the excess gas sucked out. Once it is cleaned out, he runs just fine.

Does this sound like a reasonable explanation?
Title: Re: West Seattle Bike Builds #2 & 3: the UW Husky Bike and "Frank"
Post by: fleshpiston on August 26, 2013, 07:14:31 AM
Sounds reasonable. Maybe pull the plugs right after start up and see if one is wet. I had a stuck needle valve when I fired mine up, a couple taps on the bowl with the screwdriver handle and it popped free.

Man I wish I had that much help!  :thumb:

About how long do you mean when you say let it sit for a long time? Multiple hours at work? Or like 30 minutes? There's a big difference between those two in my opinion. If it's while your at work for the whole day, or even a few hours if you rode it at lunch, and your trying to start it with no choke, good luck. I believe part of your problem, if not all, is just not letting it warn up properly. The gs is a cold blooded beast, not a fuel injected pansy, gotta keep that in mind.

It ran fine when i started it up and had it slightly choked (1.5k~2k) for like a minute, minute and a half,  when i was there.
Title: Re: West Seattle Bike Builds #2 & 3: the UW Husky Bike and "Frank"
Post by: adidasguy on August 26, 2013, 12:50:29 PM
It sits for an hour or two.
This morning I tool choke off in 20 seconds and it was fine.
Perhaps one carb has a very tiny leak on the float needle or just the float is a little high.
We can re-check them and see. Part is probably the carbs were sitting in a box - dry -  for well over a year - maybe 2.
Again, it may just be float height. I'll ride him this week and take a close look at things this weekend.
I didn't look in the airbox this morning to see if there was gas dripping out of one carb.

If I think one float is high, I can drain a thimble of gas out through the carb bowl drain and see if he starts up perfectly. If so, then that's it. Also do the clear tube to check float height. Now that gas has been in there, things should be operating better. Maybe an o-ring or something got too dry and now has a minute crack.

I've been riding him daily to get him settled in.
Saturday I plan to do the  checks for fuel, floats and other things.
As of now, if he warms up for 30 seconds with the choke on, he's ready to go.
SeaFoam in the gas so we'll see if that helps. So far no change.

Any updates/schedule for the UW bike?  Visited SIKworks (they're down the block from my house) to price repainting Adriel's bike.

Also--Jake (iirc) asked about engine speed on the CBR1000--at 65 mph in 6th, I'm pulling almost exactly 4k rpm.  Do you know, the bore and stroke on the GS and CBR are almost exactly the same?

And thats interesting. So if we just had two more cylinders we could be a cbr 1000!! Hmmmm the interesting possibilities :)

What mirrors are on this bike? They look pretty sick, would love to get a set for my GS.

I don't know.
Gorilla needed mirrors so ordered this used set from weedahoe
Waiting for them I have him a set I had
Mirrors came so Gorilla donated them to the Bike Cave
Frank needed mirrors but the SV650 chrome mirrors hadn't arrived
So the orphaned black mirrors from weedahoe got put on Frank and there they will stay.

So I guess weedahoe can answer what type of mirrors they are.

Interesting how parts get moved around in the West Seattle Bike Cave.

SCORE!

Just got a BRAND NEW OLD STOCK wiring harness for 89-00 models. $85! From a dealer in Greece! I've bought many NOS parts from them - including handlebar controls. With this new wiring harness, the Husky bike will be built with 89-00 wiring. I know this is not what I usually do, because old wiring harnesses are expensive and usually crap. That's why I use 2006+ electricals.

However, finding a brand new old harness is a real score for this project. New - still in the package!

Noticed a similar set on EJ's DL1000... Not sure if they are the same or if they would work but they look similar.  :dunno_black: He said his are Aprilia Tuono mirrors, which use also use a 10M right hand thread.

I have some bar end mirrors but i just hate the visibility or lack there of with them. I ended up going back to my chrome stockers for the time being.

Sorry - just one. From the same place I have purchased a brand new speedo, brand new handle bar controls, wheel rims white 89's (they are on Suzi!) and other assorted new-old-stock parts. There are a couple dealers in Europe with new old stock parts for good prices. That's what I do late at night: surf the web for parts.

Just ordered a 240v 6000 watt heater for the cave. It should take the chill off next weekend when it should be back in the 40's.
If necessary, I'll get a second one.
Then we need a work session to insulate some places to hold in the heat.

Sea206 helped a little after we worked on his bike. Got on some temporary wheels. Now we will be able to install a motor. He helped do a valve check on a 2001 motor and all checked out OK. He helped change out fork springs to progressives.

Getting close to a running bike while the painting is being finished.

Fantastic day.
I thought the guys here were skilled and talented when we manually hefted a motor into Matt's bike in 5 minutes.
Well, todaythey outdidthemselves on Husky.
OK. Matt (thanks for cleaning the motor), Olly and Brian were here.
Group effort.
We've done this before.
Wheeled HUHSKY out the doors to the deck. (Yama -those black rims are temporary, actually they used to be on Suzi).
Motor sitting next to frame.
Olly on left side.
Matt on right. Me straddling bike where the seat goes. Brian ready with bolts.

Woo Hoo!

Matt and Olly lifted while I lifted and guided the back of the motor. Brian being the eyes was ready to tell us where it was and shove in the bolts.
Within 30 seconds Brian had the two rear bolts inserted. Motor isn't going anywhere now.
30 seconds to put in a GS500 motor!
5 minutes more to get the frame bracket on and the other 2 bolts and spacers.
Remember: TOP REAR motor bolt is all you need to keep it in there. Both rear bolts and it is in perfect position for the front bolts to slide right in.
I am so amazed with very one here. You guys are the greatest!
In 2 weeks we have installed 2 GS motors BY HAND and in just a few minutes each.  Why does everyone say installing a motor is so difficult? I wish I made a video. Next motor install I will.

Here is HUHSKY back indoors.

HUHSKY is inside for 4 reasons:
1. There is space in the sun room
2. Bike Cave was all filled up with everyone's projects
3. Bike cave was cold (now has a 6000w 240v heater and is very nice!) the sun room was warm.
4. Wanted a place for all the expensive plastics & stuff to be where it wouldn't get scratched or damaged.

Having double french doors out to a big deck made from ipe wood also helps. I can wheel it outside with ease.

Painting is being finished and should be delivered to me Wednesday. I'm so excited!

PS: the view of Mt. Rainer really helps when working on HUHSKY.

Very interested.
I used to have the seat cowling. Sold it to the guys down under because they have different prices for licenses based on the bike carrying 1 person or two people. I bet they would have a real keen interest in that seat cowling.  (Balu Racing I recall was the brand).
There are lots of members of the West Seattle GS500 Club wanting fairings for their bikes. If not one of my bikes, I know one of the members would eagerly put it on their bike.
Shoot me some prices. Danke.

Mighty nice paint job. . T he tail is cool too. Does it slide under the seat or how does it attach?

It came very nice indeed! Much better than I was expecting! I thought that you were painting it single colour (blue, of course), but that scheme, with the stickers an all, it almost looks like OEM work.
So much customized bikes around, but haven't seen one that accomplished that "clean" OEM-like look.
Yet, the best of it is the cat paw detail!
Congrats!

The seat is the Gimbel seat. The butt pad was removed for painting.
Paw prints are actually dog - they call them the US Huskies Dawgs. Some parts have hidden dawg paw prints in the purple. It shows when the light hits it at a certain angle.

Adidas, did you have to make the seat pads for the Gimbel solo seat shell? If so did you use a old seat pan to do so?

The Gimbel seat is complete. It replaces everything on the back end. Only fits on the "E" frame. I have not tried them on the "F" frame since the tail of the frame is different. Some day I'll see if they fit, but don't thing they will.

There is a second model of Gimbel seat that just replaced the seat only and uses your regular tail plastics.

You mean the black plastic rear fender thingie? About $40 new. Same part for all GS500's. Used actually costs more on ebay, though sometimes the reflectors and turn signals are included.

BaluRacing makes one out of fiberglass without the rear fender at the back. Designed to use a metal bracket to hold the license plate. I have 2 that I'm not using. makes sense so you don't have to chop off the fender if you don't want it. Here we need it because streets are always wet and water gets thrown up on your back from the rear wheel if you don't have the fender going down the back.

All the parts were delivered tonight. Now they sit for 2 weeks to fully cure and harden, while the bike is finished and made running.

I would prefer cat paw prints, but since their mascot is a Husky, they have tobe called dog prints.
We could call them cat prints that messed up the husky dog paint?

Five Stars aka TCP.
They both use the stock signals mounted to the new fairing bracket so that means any signals can be used.
See the general area thread on the fairings.
Same as used here and on Junior.

I have been asked to display HUHSKY at the international motorcycle show in February.
Starting the 27th of December, after I get back from Prague, anyone willing to offer any help will be appreciated.

Wow! Bike not even finished and scheduled for a show in 8 weeks. I know we can do it!

I plan to have the bike running by New Year's Day. Then it is putting on the fairings and go riding the 2nd week of January ...... I hope.

Wow! HUHSKY will be in the international motorcycle show!

Powered up HUHSKY!
Electrical system works. Starter works. Turn signals work. Headlight works. Brake light works.
Anxious to put on muffler and hit the starter button with some starter fluid and hear him bark to life.
Brake lines on. Need to wheel him outside to fill them up.

IDEA: I have extra fairings. I'll use an extra set to get all the brackets on and be sure every thing fits. Then just a simple swap out of the used fairing and put on the real stuff. That will eliminate the possibility of scratching the fairing while getting the brackets installed.

SEA206 (aka Matt) came over today. Lots of progress.
Progress today....
* Bar ends
* Motad muffler
* Muffler guards
* Gimbel shift lever connected
* 3 point clutch adjustment
* Dual headlights wired in

Found a few things I need to deal with:
* sorter clutch cable (have, just need to swap)
* Longer throttle cable. Thought right one for newer carbs but too short
* Choke cable - had older one but need to find a newer one for the 2001 carbs

Anyway, Matt decided to put the carbs on. When he want out to the bike cave and returned with a can of starter fluid, I took that as another hint he wanted to hear the motor run. So...........

HE RUNS! HE IS  ALIVE!

Still lots of little things to do. He should be running up and down the alley Saturday. Tomorrow will be a clean up day, tighten bolts and get the fairing brackets on (since some go on the motor mount bolts).

Matt is so tall he makes HUHSKY look really small - then the wide angle lens to take the picture doesn't help.

Anyone available Today Wednesday? How about Saturday? I think Saturday (maybe Wednesday) we can be riding him down the alley for some road test. (After 10am please)

Should I add fog lights to the forks?
The right hand control has headlight switches. I can reroute them to the fog lights or make it {off}-{headlight}-{fog+headlight}

I plan to add a relay to bypass the clutch switch if bike is in neutral. Much handier when working on a bike and you need to start it. That will be handy on cold days when bike starts without choke and you have to immediately bring on the choke to get it warmed up. Fiddling with the clutch lever gets my fingers all confused. I could add a manual switch to bypass the clutch switch when you want to - but that would still let you start in gear ---which could be helpful when bump starting with a weak battery. (A little ump while being able to hit the starter while in gear should make bump starting really ease.)

The Kawasaki EX500 starts in neutral with no clutch. If in gear, clutch must be pulled in.

No intention of overriding side stand kill switch when in gear.

All wiring finished.
As add-ons I'll put a switch for 4-way flashers and change wiring to allow starting in neutral without holding in clutch (the way most other bikes work).
Gauges are on. Sweet! Not sure if I'll change the bracket to silver or paint the handle bar setup.
Because I'm using 89-00 controls (new-old-stock is why and NOS wiring harness) I had to make mods for the choke and throttle to work correctly with newer (2001+) carbs, Choke was drilling an extra spot for the cable. Throttle was shaving a little off the stop on the throttle tube so the carb end of the cable was longer.

Looks like with brakes, air box and tank he will be outside running around the block Saturday. The start of a week long shake down to be sure mechanicals are OK before putting on the Huskies parts.

Choke mod: newer one on left. Older one with extra hole on the right.

No, that is a REAL 0.7 miles. New old stock speedo I happened to find over a year ago - I couldn't pass up on one for a super good price.

Just finished the mod for starting in neutral without holding in clutch lever. Sweet! I'm going to make that mod on all my bikes.
(If not in neutral, you must hold in the clutch.)

Speedo from Greece, as is the wiring harness, hand controls and a few other things that are NOS. Good prices there and fast shipping.
This bike has parts from over 6 countries and encompasses 1989-2013 for the vintage of the parts (Motad was made this year in the UK, rear fender bought new and Gimbel rear sets new). Rear hugger from Canada. Billet fork brace.

I'll have to compile a list of where the parts came from. So interesting to discover minor differences in parts. There are 2 different lengths of speedo cable! Go figure?

Correction to earlier post: it is a real 0.7 KM (not miles, sorry).

I so can't wait until Saturday. I hope for good weather to fill the brakes and get the bike on the road for a week of road testing before the Huskies parts go on. Plan is oil change, valve adjustment (was done, but re-check after 100km as the motor has sat for 2 or more years) and a final washing of all parts then the good parts go on. Have to get rims to the dealer for bearings and rubber. Have Sport Demons and new bearings.

It is so close now.

Title: Re: West Seattle Bike Builds #2 & 3: the UW Husky Bike and "Frank"
Post by: adidasguy on January 03, 2014, 01:01:44 AM
I also prefer the Gimbel solo seat. But while things were being painted, it made sense to paint a stock tail set so I have a choice of tails.

Cleaned up wiring. Airbox in. Put battery on the balance charger for a while since I've been using it and the bike has not been running for any time to charge it. (LiFe batteries have 4 internal cells. A balance charger reads each cell and charges all cells to the same voltage for optimum performance and life)

Re-keyed the seat lock to match the ignition. Put in the "Back-Off" brake light flasher.

I bit the bullet and ordered new OEM brake rotors. I couldn't see used rotors on pretty purple wheels. When they come in next week I'll take the rims, tires and new bearings to Aurora Suzuki. When I ordered the rotors, I saw it was cheaper on Partzilla. Aurora does price matching, no shipping and they tell me when they will come in & where the warehouse is they are coming from. Smart ontheir part to pricematch on-line prices to keep my business. (They still make money.)

Tomorrow is fuel lines and brake fluid and Saturday is road testing!

Quitting for the night.

I just can't stop working. I must get some sleep.

Fitting the fairing is going OK. There is a lower front piece that will have to be trimmed to fit around the exhaust (Motad pipes are a little farther out just like V&H pipes, compared to stock,  so not unexpected or nothing I haven't done before).

This is a spare fairing I'm using to fit the brackets and remember how it all goes together. I don't want to fudge up the good parts.

This fairing looks hot. Love how it extends back and even bolts to the rider peg mounts. Side stand goes through the fairing!

I'm so anxious to have him finished but there must be a week of road testing with the junk fairings and junk tank before all the good stuff goes on. Anyway, an extra week of curing of the clear coat on them is a good thing.

Front fender will go on when the finished purple wheels with Sport Demons go on.

Weekend of the 11th and 12th will be busy. If all goes well this week, the 11th will be final cleaning, oil change and valve adjustment. Then we put on all the final parts.
Hopefully Aurora Suzuki will get in the new OEM brake rotors so the purple wheels will be ready to pick up Friday.

Things to do tomorrow:
* Tighten steering stem
* Put on horn

During the week:
* Chain guard (you all know what that looks like)
* Rear hugger (you know that, too, thanks to airbrush.)
* Monitor chain tension
* Always look for loose bolts
* Replace any parts that are not up to par
* Install the idiot LED battery monitor
* Figure out where to put a switch for 4-way flashers (yes, really simple to mod our bikes for this)

Saturday (might start Friday evening)
* Oil change
* Valve check
* Thorough cleaning
* Check every bolt, wire and thingie again
* If all is OK, put on the finished Huskies parts

Everyone is welcome to come over and help plus work on your own bike. Tools are out. Everything is a mess. So many projects lately. FUN!

All riding going OK. Tonight I must tighten the steering stem. With riding, the bearings have seated themselves in further and it was put on with no wheel or weight on the front when first tightened.

Ordered a pile of shims to refill the box so we're ready for a valve adjustment. It seems 2.55, 2.60 and 2.65 are the most common sizes we have to put in bikes and we were getting low. Also replenishing the stock pile of stainless screws, rubber bumpers and other little bits you always should have around.

The motor is loosening up and running smother the more it gets run. Tried to contact the original owner for some history but no response yet. The clutch engages really good so I think that is new. Really good downhill engine braking so again it seems the rings and valves are all new or nearly new. Saturday a valve adjustment and oil change.

Not a single drip of oil anywhere.

Some white smoke in the morning but that is water vapor. The cool nights here cause lots of condensation on everything so I'm sure the inside of the exhaust and air box are damp. I tested it with my hand and it is just steam.

Tomorrow the rims go to Aurora Suzuki. I'll pick them up Friday for Saturday's transition. New rotors, new bearings and 90* gold valve stems. (FYI: Get 90* valve stems next time you do wheels. Just a pain to get the tire pump in there between the stem and the hub - especially on rear wheels.)

:woohoo: We're getting close!  :woohoo:

Glad for anyone that wants to help or just hang out to come over Saturday (and Sunday if we run late on Saturday and don't finish.) Then we take him for a ride around the city and maybe even to the UW campus!

Absolutely - I'm sure some of the guys would love having some of their own tools. If they are extras, they will be shared.

Just tightened up the steering on HUHSKY. Rides solid like a new bike now.Turned on heat in the cave and after some Sponge Bob or Family Guy I'll install a real bad ass horn and adjust the left control position.

The more I ride him, the better the motor runs. That makes me extremely happy!

Dropped wheels off at Aurora Suzuki.
New brake rotors were in. Mechanic took a look at the front rotor and said he would not put it on a show bike because it had a couple dings on the black part so they're going to get another one.
Aurora Suzuki will insure the new rotor is perfect. Gotta love a dealer that looks out for you and goes the extra mile without even asking.
So this weekend we'll put on all the plastics & tank. Wheels will be another week. Easy to swap wheels later.

FYI: When replacing tires, put on 90* valve stems so it is easier to put air in. Also, mechanic says never get them in rubber. Always get metal due to the side pressure on them when you add air.

Added horn last night, temporary front fender (its raining here, go figure!) and adjusted left hand controls (rotated back a little).
Bike running fine.

Matt, Zak, Brian, Olly, Jacob (I hope I didn't forget anyone) oh, Austin, Alan, James, Dave, Scottie..... anyone I forgot? Sorry if I did.

.....and the everyone on GStwins who have offered advice (I was a total noob 4 years ago) and donated parts to the West Seattle Bike Cave.

I couldn't have done it without all the help.

Trying to remember what HUHSKY is...

Tank and OEM tails and front fender were blue and bought from someone on the board - I forget who right now - and were on Trey before sold to Nortwestrider and replaced with purple.

Sonic springs 0.85's
89 knuckle with 2009 shock
89 OEM new old stock: (Greece):
   wiring harness
   hand controls
   Speedometer (came with 0.7 KM onit)
Front wheel rim new 1989 painted purple (will be on next week) from Idaho warehouse
Gimbel (Germany):
   solo seat
   rear sets
Motad exhaust (UK)
Frame: 1998 from Maryland (I think)
Motor and carbs 2001 (bought from a member in Oregon but I can't remember his user ID) about 2 years ago.
Turn signals: OEM 2001+ ebay
Turn signal smoke lenses and smoke taillight: Lights4All from ebay and Germany
Fairing: Assembled from NOS parts and one used part, all collected from Israel, Germany, UK and Spain. (User perisito and Jim Knopf  helped acquire the parts)
    with Headlight fixture from the UK on ebay (begged to ship to the USA)
Some parts from Jim Knopf
Billet fork brace from chuck81
Rear hugger from airbrush (Canada)
Levers: LSL fromGermany
OEM NOS 1989 handlebar brackets from Israel
NOS bars from Susuki CSML (I think) in France
OEM type seat from an ebay seller trying to start a business but never heard back about doing more seats.
Many nearly new parts from pinwall cycle on ebay
Lots of bits from my excellent dealer Aurora Suzuki
Gas cap: Roaring Toyz
R&G bar ends and muffler guards (UK)
LEDs for gauges and indicators Superbright LEDs
Fork reflectors: Harley stick-ons from ebay for $12
Frame and tank petcocks NOS from ebay
Painting by Wes Price on facebook

That covers a lot of it. that I can remember right now.
Parts range from 1989 (knuckle) through 2013 (exhaust and R&G parts)

This bike is a real Frankenstein built from parts from all over the world.

Sorry if I forgot to mention someone on the board that contributed parts.

PS: Found that I can get a helmet done by Killer Paint here in the south Seattle area.

Another week for the purple wheels. Black, right angle valve stems won't be here until Monday.
That's OK. This weekend I plan to replace speedo and tach cables with new and might swap the tack with one that might look better at night. That and more test riding.

Lots more to do. Until the show, mainly clean up and sort parts. Got to know what's here for the 2 additional bike frames. Need to check out the motors for them. Swap carbs on Frank then sell him. Finish the EX then sell him.

Brian is doing some work on Thumper and Thumper will be in the show along with HUHSKY. Alan's DORA (formerly Trey) will be in the show, too. We will have 3 out of 40 bikes in the Sound Rider booth.

Not quite. It was "Buy it Now" and "Make Offer". They took my offer but still over $250 to get it here.
I feel like Al Bundy on that episode of Married with Children where he needed a rare ash tray to finish restoring an old Mustang. Now I have NEW speedometer and tachometer. One from Greece, the other from Germany. I couldn't have a faded tach next to a new speedometer. Odometer started out with 0.7 kmon it so really it does show true mileage since the bike was built. Pretty cool!

2 weeks until the Progressive International Motorcycle Show!

Al:   The restaurant will hold our reservations because, after all, it's your birthday and I'm
        a doctor. Come on girls, we're going to the ghetto!

Al and Steve lead their wives outside.

ACT TWO

SCENE ONE

Al and Steve come in. Al is holding a red ashtray.

Al:   It's beautiful. Look at it, Steve. It's a virgin.

Steve bends down to have a closer look.

Al:   There has never been a cigarette in that ashtray.

Peg comes in and puts her cigarette in the ashtray.

Chain is gold - school colors.
Purple would be too much purple and the contract of the gold chain is nice.
James (jmill), a UW student, came over and LOVES IT! He nearly peed his pants when he saw it in person.

I ride him a lot. Not on wet days.
Though I keep thinking HUHSKY is a girl as I often say "She".

PS: I guess HUHSKY is a girl. It just seems right to say "she". Junior and Phenix are boys. Suzi is a girl.

Most bikes and cars are girls ;) You've got to spend time and money on them to keep them happy.

the worst part is that this bike is going up for an estate sale. Who knows whom will get it and at what price. Mostly I hope they don't drop the bike the 1st week they get it. It starts up SO SMOOTH like no other GS in the cave.

Do you know this for a fact? Any info about the estate sale?

Mike, patricks brother, said the bikes and the house are the first to be sold in the estate sale.

Pardon my ignorance since I don't really have experience with how that stuff works, I'm just curious why all his stuff is getting sold -- he had so much cool stuff that he cared so much about it just seems wrong to me to sell it off like that.

That is the law and the rights of his family. I am sorry to say we didn't get a chance to get many of his more sentinmental items but I, BrianRC, and Ryan (not sure hes on the boards) grabbed items to be able to help future GSers.

For example,

My dad and I have plans to soon start a NORTH seattle GS Bike Club and BrianRC and Ryan have taken another portion of patricks parts so that we may one day be able to give them to people in need. That's what Patrick would have wanted.

Don't worry we grabbed many things in order to help others like Patrick would've wanted. In fact, if I have extra parts, I will be sending what I collected from Patrick to others asap.

That is awesome to hear Gorilla! He would definitely approve! I figured the stuff would go up for sale. Just too much for the family to sort though, and tough for someone w/o the mechanical eye to see the value in the GS parts.

I really wish i was closer, I'd be there with auction paddle in my hand for sure

Patrick brother, mike, was very willing to let us have many of the parts with the intention of GIVING them away at some point.

BrianRC, Ryan (patricks neighbor), Ollie (patricks best friend), and I have collected as much as we can that was going to be thrown away. Once we get time we plan to give it all away somehow. We just have to meet and start a count of exactly what we have. You wont believe how many parts he had! We also tried to grab as many pictures of Patrick and adidas stuff he had lying around. We will take pictures and see what we can send and to whom.

I alone cannot make that decision and its a real commitment to get everyone to meet at a certain time of the week at a certain day on a certain hour or so. After that we will start the process of figuring out what to do with it. It will be a group decision though.

I think the best thing to do would be to just keep up trucking like Patrick did, and exchange parts for other parts, or beer/pizza. That way stock/bellies stay full and we can keep the club alive. I really want to know where this estate sale is going on. I would hate to see any one of his bikes (Mainly GS's) go to someone that didnt even know Patrick, let alone the forum. Also, the amount of firearms he had... What is going to happen with all of  them?

Get ahold of the builder and see ifbtheyll go for it. If I could figure out what I could sell to do it, id bid via proxy and have one of yall stash it and send to me freight collect. Couldnr mortgage house quickly enough though. But I do have to get that 22 revolver I senr to him. Very sentimental to me. Would be a piece id NEVER let go again. Gorilla, you know about the other items I wish for and why :( if you want feel free to relay this information to michael along with my contact information in time for me to save needed funds to make it happen if hes willing. Id be most appreciative. Many thanks my friend. Lets keep the west seattle gs500 club goin Eh?. Even if it wnds up in omaha lol
