Title: What gear does everyone wear?
Post by: Toiletbooger on May 07, 2013, 05:46:05 PM
As a new rider I just ordered all my riding gear, here's what I got:

DryRider Air rider Jacket
(https://www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au/sc_images/products/3839_image.jpg)

Shoei XR-1100 Helmet
(https://www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au/sc_images/products/3544_image.jpg)

Dryrider Air ride gloves
(https://www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au/sc_images/products/3407_image.jpg)

Dryrider kevlar jeans
(https://www.thehelmetwarehouse.com.au/sc_images/products/3978_image.jpg)

Naturally it's to use on my new (to me) GS500F
What do you think?
What gear does everyone else wear?

Thanks,

Here's hoping it never has to do anything but look cool.
(admittedly motorcycle gear looks damn awesome)

Nice gear, shoei is a great helmet. I never used "Dryrider" gear, but looks great.

I wear only joe rocket(jackets/pants), but that's my personal favorite.

My current gear:
Joe Rocket Ballistic series jack (2 of them different models).
Joe Rocket phoenix Pants(hardly ever wear unless doing twistys).
Joe rocket Gloves.
Fieldsheer jacket (hardly wear it unless extremely hot out).

Vega helmets (2 of them).
HJC helmet(hardly any wind noise).

On normal riding like to and from work I only wear helmet, jacket and gloves.  You will never see me with out the helmet and jacket, even if its just going down the road to get a bite to eat.

I think that it's an Australian brand, all motorcyclists around here seem to know about it.

Also turns out it's spelled "Dririder", I typed it wrong even though it's right there in the picture haha

Great start, then you just need boots and leathers, you could go a 2 piece suit so you can seperate jacket and pants or have both a 2 piece suit and a one piece race suit.

Good choice on the gear - beats the singlet, stubbies and Jandals / FlipFlops

Currently using the following:
Strada Jacket (Hi Vis version with Kevlar inserts)
Speed X leggings
Shark Openline helmet
Alpinestars gloves (should probably replace them soon since Winter arrived this morning)
Usually have some sort of capped boots - during winter I actually use safety gumboots to keep nice and dry  :thumb:

Having parked a few bikes on the side on asphalt, I have to say that good gear is worth every cent - my last Strada jacket saved my a$$ (well my elbow and arm actually)

Hope you never have to find out how good it works

When you say leathers does that mean leather pants, or just leather gear in general?

I had my eye on leather jacket like this (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mens-leather-jacket-motorcycle-jacket-motorbike-RETRO-vintage-fashion-jacket-/221195620631?pt=Men_s_Clothing&var&hash=item3380495117&_uhb=1#ht_5995wt_1159) for a little while;

But I wanted something better for all conditions, hence the dririder jacket.

For boots I'm currently wearing my steel cap work boots until some more cash rolls in, they cover my ankles so better than a pair of runners I guess.

I have three jackets and counting. I have an all weather one, a summer mesh jacket, and a leather jacket. Planning on a set of leathers, and a summer leather jacket

My mesh jacket is just for fair weather. For cold, the AGV jacket goes on, with insulated layer if needed. When the ambient temperature is above 95°F, the AGV jacket again goes on, with insulated layer. Mesh jackets in high heat are a bad idea. Convective heating is no fun.

Got 3 helmets Shoei, Scorpion, and Seven Zero Seven. I switch  lot between the Scorpion and seven zero seven. The Scorpion is white and pink and the seven zero seven is black. I have two Joe Rocket textile jackets and an AGV is leather. I also have two pairs of textile riding pants one with knee armor one with out. But, since it is Florida I really can't wear them except in fall and winter. So, I have jeans with Bilt knee protectors. Need to get better hip protection though. Finally, but very important I have a pair of Bilt motorcycle boots. I got these for $59 Motorcycle gear has smoking deals I love that place  :thumb: and I'm fortunate or not (gearwhore wise) that there is one close by so I can try stuff on!

Before anyone asks: No, I don't have Rev'it shares or anything  :icon_mrgreen:
They just happen to be a Dutch company, so a lot of motorcycle stores in my area supply their stuff.

First jacket I ever bought was made by them.  I liked it so much that I stuck with them.  Excellent value for money in my opinion.
Here's my list: it's quite long, but when I got into motorcycles I promised myself I wouldn't cut corners on safety.

ATGATT for me  :thumb:

Helmet

Lazer Monaco Pure Glass
Fiberglass modular helmet.  Scores well in a lot of tests/reviews.  Very pleased with it.
Discussed it in my first ever vlog a few weeks ago: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFzdrlUI8qE

Jackets:

° Rev'it Bronx
autumn > winter > early spring
removable thermo liner and wind collar, good jacket: completely wind- and waterproof
I like the casual look of this jacket...

Rev'it Air
spring > summer
Great jacket.  Nice tight fit, zips to the back of my pants so it won't slide up in the event of a slide.
With nothing but a shirt underneath this is perfect on a hot summer's day.  I usually wear a thin fleece or a windstopper underneath on those 'in-between-days'.

Pants

° Rev'it Factor2
autumn > winter (other seasons: only outer shell)
Very comfortable pants with good warm lining.
Sometimes I'll use the outer pants during summer as well, just wear them over my normal jeans.
Can come in handy when I need to ride to an occasion where I can't come dressed in full riding gear.

Rev'it Gear2
spring > summer
Leather pants with mesh panels on the front.  With a zip-in waterproof lining.
Lining stays in during colder days, goes out when it's hot. Comes in so many sizes/protection inserts are so versatile that you can really 'customize' the fit of these pants.  Love mine, fit like a glove.

Richa Kevlar Jeans
All year
My 'backup pants'   When I take one of my mates for a ride, they usually wear this, the outer Bronx jacket and my low boots.

Gloves:

° Dane Funen
winter only
Goretex gloves, perfectly waterproof, still not good enough for longer rides on very cold days, but they do the trick 99% of the time.

Rev'it gloves
autumn, cold summer days, spring
Forgot the name of this model, apparently no longer in production, picture looks a lot like mine
Basic gloves.  good fit: you forget you're even wearing them.

Richa airwave
hot summer days
Not my favourite gloves.  Provide excellent airflow, but the fit's just not perfect.

Boots

TCX Jupiter 2
All year, mostly autumn and winter
Low boot, gore tex
Use this pair most with my winter pants

Rev'it Rival H20
All year, mostly spring/summer
Good boots, use them most with my summer pants, because they have a tendency to crawl up on the lower TCX boots, when I take on a more sporty riding position

(http://images.motorcycle-superstore.com/ProductImages/OG/2009-REVIT-Rival-H2O-Boots-Black.jpg?01AD=3tdrtLDQCfCvI-uIt-sCtxm5xDuZC_u4zvqII1ixg1CpVIfG4ehgqnQ&01RI=D7AD6A1784BB6C2&01NA=)

just realised.. i aint listed gear yet ..

ok .. Nolan N102 Helmet (http://www.cruisercustomizing.com/images/nolan-n102-titaniumsilver_600.jpg)
but i really want one of the new N104  :thumb:

Starider (a smaller AUssie company) Mesh Jacket with liner (http://twowheelwarehouse.com.au/images/products/starider%20mesh%20&textile%20jacket.jpg) (same jacket but main lower panel is kinda silver)
sometimes a GoGoGear Armoured Hoodie (http://quadrophenia.vpweb.co.nz/373_500_csupload_49129247.jpg?u=691694772) (http://quadrophenia.vpweb.co.nz/373_500_csupload_49129166.jpg?u=1854494152) inside out view to show pads etc
Starider fully lined black denim jeans (http://www.starider.com.au/images/detailed/1/3.jpg) (about $130 compared to $250 for the big brands?) .. and IMO a better lining and overall fit (for me)

either Rjays Mesh Gloves (http://www.mcas.com.au/products///8d15e75933.jpg) or Rjays tornado gloves (for cold conditions)(http://www.mcas.com.au/products///ce204618df.jpg)

Johnny Reb 'Rascal' boots .. in size US14 .. also good for head kicking!  ;) (http://www.mcas.com.au/products///a000488052.jpg) but with the little heel logo removed... just didnt like it  :icon_rolleyes:

i want to get some full lined cargo pants (camo or plain) .. that come in 46 (fat bastard) .. but its been a long search for my budget requirements..

also want to get one of the 'older' Joe Rocket , Rocket Nation leather Jackets .. dont mind paying for this .. but budget and time for looking when i have the $ is hard to match  :icon_rolleyes:

and eventually need to look up a good rainsuit in 'fat bastard' size too... i actually dont mind riding in rain at all... lol... seeing the water drops splatting the  face shield entertains my simple perceptions..  :thumb:

Shark S500 Air Lid. Served me well over the last 3 years riding, probably the most comfortable thing I've ever had on my head.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o605/malfruen/645117261_tp_zps202daa80.jpg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/malfruen/media/645117261_tp_zps202daa80.jpg.html)

Rivet Monaro Touring Jacket. Recommended to me by a friend who has the exact same one. A bit warm in Summer buzzing around town, but comfortable at highway speeds. Trashed the first one I had when I ditched Spewey last year. Trolled around for another one online. Loads of pockets too, so I don't run out of space for shaZam!.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o605/malfruen/alpha_zpsb13a2431.jpg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/malfruen/media/alpha_zpsb13a2431.jpg.html)

Alpine Stars Alpha Touring Waterproof Boots. Once again, recommended to me. Good protection for my ankles, of which one of mine is rooted already.

(http://i1150.photobucket.com/albums/o605/malfruen/ALLSEASONS_zps5e0923fa.jpg) (http://s1150.photobucket.com/user/malfruen/media/ALLSEASONS_zps5e0923fa.jpg.html)

RJays All Seasons Gloves. Waterproofish, a bit warm in summer, but really good fit for my hands.

I don't have pants anymore, they got trashed when I ditched Spewey on his final ride late last year. I can't find a picture of the old ones, they were some no name brand things I picked up from a clearance table at the stealership. $60 and I got to keep my skin. Happy with that.

I can't recommend the knee guards enough. They go on comfortably under jeans and, they can take a beating (tested by yours truly), and they are very well ventilated.

The shoes are pretty great too. They can also take a beating, the mesh construction is great for moisture wicking, and they are pretty comfortable. My only complaint is that the lack of laces leaves the shoes a little loose. You do have to be careful with sizing--if they are too loose, they can and will come off in an accident. Mine held up fine when I lowsided and trapped my foot under the bike, but they could stand to be a little more form fitting.

Finding good gear on a limited budget has always been tricky. This is the stuff I use the most these days.

Icon Motorhead Boots
Olympia 710 Gel gloves

Just got a new flip-face helmet with integrated sunshield and bluetooth. Haven't taken them out of box yet.

Got a TourMaster textile jacket last year to replace my Fieldsheer which replaced my FirstGear Kilimanjaro.  The Kili got shredded and although I really liked the Fieldsheer it was no longer waterproof around the waist. The TourMaster is a shorter jacket than I'm used to. Not sure I would buy another one but it was on closeout so the price was right and it's decent overall.

My only bit of gear aside from helmets is a Cortech jacket, but even though it's a small, it's too big for me. I plan on selling it--it seems that most motorcycle jackets just are proportioned all wrong for my body type.

I've heard the Corazzo brand jackets have a smaller "Euro fit", so I might pick up one of them.

I plan on getting a nice high-end helmet sometime, but for now I just have a $40 HCI (not HJC) 3/4. For the money it's actually a pretty comfortable helmet; I have no complaints at that price, other than the snaps for a face shield/visor aren't durable.

New/Current:
Shoei Qwest Ethereal helmet
Speed & Strength Twist of Fate 2.0 textile jacket
RevIt Chevron gloves
TCX X-Cube boots
Joe Rocket Phoenix 3.0 pants

Old/Replaced this season:
Bell Vortex RSD Apocalypse helmet
Joe Rocket Hemp jacket
Joe Rocket Supermoto 2.0 gloves

Due to my 60 lb weight loss over the past 11 months, I need to replace a bunch of the gear accumulated while at my peak weight. Gear is worthless if you can't count on protecting what is meant to be protected.

The Bell helmet is being replaced by a Shoei Qwest that should be delivered today. (At $250 shipped for a new-in-box Shoei Qwest, I couldn't resist.) After watching the Arai video, I actually thought about how the Bell helmet was fitting after losing some of the extra cushion (read: fat) on my head.

The Joe Rocket jacket is being replaced by the Speed & Strength jacket for temperate weather riding. It starts to get a bit warm as the temperature creeps over about 80*F, but as long as I'm moving it's tolerable. Looking for a warm weather jacket to add to the closet.

The Joe Rocket gloves were replaced by the RevIt gloves partially due to the weight loss making them pretty loose and partially due to the hard palm puck that gets caught on my throttle...makes my throttle control a little herky-jerky at times.

The Joe Rocket pants may be replaced soon, too. Right now, I can wear them as overpants, but not by themselves because they are too large after my weight loss. I'm fine as long as I'm on the bike, but I need to strip them off as soon as I get off due to them sliding down on their own anyway. I'm also looking at picking up some kevlar riding pants, but I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet.

Mine held up fine when I lowsided and trapped my foot under the bike, but they could stand to be a little more form fitting.

thanks for your info. I am definitely looking to get those knee guards. Shoes too!

hey Ross one question on the knee guards. I have medium to thick calves and legs. I aint no skinny boy! Do you think these are more the european skinny leg kind of fit? If so I might have to look elsewhere

Sartso and Draggin Kevlar jeans

I'm looking to get some kevlar jeans for the shorter rides. Any opinions/preferences/words of wisdom on either or both of these? Are the Draggins the USA or Aussie version?
