When i was picking up some stuff for my motorbike, a dude with a 2003 Gs500 told me that Gs500 has 2 types of engines. an old and a new one.
is this true? if so, whats the difference?

Old = 89-00. New = 01 and later. The biggest difference is the oil cooler. Maybe 04 and later. 01-02 didn't have oil cooler did it guys ? 01-02 is odd ball, has many one off's, carbs and other stuff. Good thing is ... they all swap over with minor mods.
Cool.
Buddha.
Id say theres more like 1 type of engine.. with probably about 3 major variations.. (US market)
89-00, The Original, painted black
01-03, Addition of the Pair system + different carbs + silver paint.
04+, Addition of the oil Cooler
Black engine was thru 96, silver from 97 on. I had a 97 with silver engine. Another 96-97 change was a new front caliper design which remains 97 thru 09.
01-02 got 3 circuit carbs w/o Pair, new rear body work, and steeper 25* rake replaced 25.5* on 89-00 models. Parts fiches are same for 89-96 and same for 97-00.
Biggest change was on 04-09 fully faired F models which retained new rear body work from 01-02 but got the 3 circuit carbs with Pair, throttle position sensor, single pick-up signal generator replaced the dual ones on 89-02, electric tach replaced the mechanical driven ones on 89-02 models, and 04-09 F models got the oil cooler.
No 03 models were sold in US and only 04-09 F models were sold here after that. No new GS here after 09 model.
The oil cooler, single coil signal generator, and electronic tach are significant when changing engines between 89-02 models and 04-09 models.
O wow.
Thanks for the info!! :)
