For sure, we must to give thanks to Bridgestone, to Suzuki to achieve this important result :icon_lol:

CONGRATS!!!
How did you make a 1.80 shim? I thought the smallest was 2.15?
Congrats btw, I'm at 57,000 miles myself. 99k feels like a lifetime away with home much maintenance the GS takes per mile. All my shims are still in the 270 range because of a recent top end rebuild I did, so that won't be what does mine in.

Well...I really wanted to shoot for 100k miles when I hit 60k, so I got brave and ordered shims from https://www.precisionshims.com.au/. I guess Suzuki was being conservative with the minimum shim size (only one exhaust valve was losing clearance more than the others) and I was concerned about throwing a shim, but I spoke to some mechanics that said I could go smaller than 215, but now I have the clearance to make it to the goal...I'm scared to throw in a smaller shim, so 90k was my last valve service...we'll see how long it goes...
Hmmm...I have the opposite experience...the maint. experience per mile is the reason I keep buying these GS500's. I can't believe how reliable this bike has been...I even started doing light offroading...the bike doesn't give a crap LoL...the rider just needs to do their part. Besides the normal wear items...the issue is usually just oil leaks haha from old seals and now it drinks (burns) oil like gas...I just got used to topping it off every 200mi and carrying oil on longer trips haha...don't even bother with scheduled oil changes anymore hehe
I don't like my bike burning that much oil. If I can't make it 3,000 miles with 1 extra quart, I like to do a top end rebuild. At 58,000 miles I'm back to being able to go 3,000 miles with little to no oil top-up after the latest rebuild.
Sounds like your bike badly needs a rebuild if its building that much oil and in the process you can have a machinist cut your valves to reset your shim size to factory spec.
Glad your GS500 has been reliable. Yours is a 2002 so built in Japan. My 2006 was built in Spain and there are very few parts I haven't had to touch at some point. Everything from new rear shock and fork seals to opening up the bottom end to replace the cam chain tensioner guide and output shaft. Bad crank sensors, bad petcocks, sheared starter clutch bolts and disintegrated generator magnets, cracked fairing brackets, leaky output seal. That's just off the top of my head, I've forgotten most of the stuff I've had to do.
How much oil is in litres between L and H mark on dipstick?
i suspect that is almost 0.750 litres
For a 500km run i burn a quarter of the dipstick. but i have a leak in the cylinder head gasket that at high rpms worsenns a lot so...
In reality it doesnt burn much oil except for the summer. I am at the middle of the dipstick for a oil change(around 5000km or pre winter/summer), maybe in summer i top it out just to be sure before a long ride, but frankly i think that is wasting oil and prefer to do a total change inmstead of refilling, i mean, its at tops one refill of half dipstick a for me is the "oil chang is coming" flag.
I have to rebuild the top end so i will know for sure then.
@Bluesmudge <How often did you change oil seals? i wiil do it since im rebuilding, but by chance, yo know how much they last or when it will start eating more oil?

Of course the engine could use a rebuild at 99K miles...I'm handy and do all the maintenance, but rebuild is where I draw the line. Not a big deal to just top off the oil. Honestly all my GS500s start to burn oil even at low miles 30K. In my experience they don't burn much at 5K rpm 60mph. Starts to burn when you get in the powerband after 6K rpm 70mph...long periods on the highway.
It's becoming harder to find...especially since I'm only looking at 2001-2002 GS500s, but I'm keeping my eye out for a lower mileage bike to purchase, like I've done previously. Most don't ride much...amazing I found this bike with only 14K miles...similar to my other pre2000 GS500s...concerned it might be an odometer change out, but I have found these bikes with original tires and chain to verify the mileage was true...crazy. Sadly, if I can't find another GS I may have to move on the the new Kawi Z500, but I'm sure it won't be as durable...we'll see.
Yeah...I try to stay away from the new GS500Fs due to the extra plumbing with the carbs, oil cooler, goats (starter clutch generator magnets). I feel like the short lived 2001-2002 GS500s are the best. Before that, I've owned a couple pre 2000 models.

Hmm...good question...not sure how much oil between L and H mark on dipstick. Good on you guys for the knowledge and desire to rebuild.
Oh man, I had a scare on the highway when the bike started loosing power just as I got to my exit. I didn't hear any alarming noises from the engine and I was able to make it home at a lower speed. Even when there's a problem...the good old GS still gets you home LoL :icon_razz:
Good news!...the iridium plugs were just fouled with oil after 5K miles. I switched to the hot version of the standard plug NGK DPR7EA-9. The GS runs fine again...Just need to bring it home to 100K...looks like we can make it :woohoo:
