Trouble with the neutral light...

Okay... why is my neutral light on when I'm in gear and driving down the road?

If I have the kickstand down it seems to work fine...

I've got the new 500f model, has anyone else had this problem?

I'm hope it's covered by the warranty... I'll be calling the dealer this weekend... I figure if it's a common thing somebody has seen it before and maybe the dealer wouldn't keep my bike all week...

Judging from the '90-'96 wiring diagram, it looks like your neutral switch (bottom center) is probably goofed up.

If it can be taken care of under warranty, go for it!

Did the older model have the cut off switch for the kickstand?

Here is another interesting tidbit.. The light gets brighter when it really is in neutral and I was on the freeway last night and the light dimmed then came back on when I got off the freeway... Damn gremlins!

My guess is a bad side stand relay diode is providing an unwanted ground path to the neutral indicator light.  This will cause it to illuminate dimly since there is some resistance in the path.

When the kickstand is down, the kickstand switch is open, this removes the unwanted ground path to the neutral indicator light.

When the bike is actually in neutral then it gets a good ground through the normal path (neutral switch).

I'll be dropping it off at the dealer on Wednesday. I called over the weekend and the service guy said he has run into the problem before but not with GS...

Hey John, you might know of the place... it's in central ohio... Hinds Powersports between Columbus and Delaware...

fettcols,

I have been there a couple times, but haven't done business with them.
My son has and I haven't heard any complaints.

Let us know how it gets fixed.
