Ok I have a 96 and It has been perfect, I got it 6 months ago and have gone through 1 oil change.  When i got it had 4400mi on it, now it's coming up on 7500.  But I have noticed a little lag in the bike at highways speeds, especially around 60 in 6th gear.  almost feels like i'm sputtering low on gas, not as severe a stutter and it only lasts a second. But it's definetly there.  No I am good on gas.

Dirty carb?  throw a LITTLE carb cleaner in it?

Spark Plugs?

Fuel filter?

Air filter?

Not a major thing but it is a new sensation.

I just got back from a ride to Glacier Park from Seattle, and back, Hot temps over there and lot of higher speed riding.  70+MPH  Bike rode out fine though and the Going to the Sun Highway was... Fantastic for lack of a better word.

A partial bottle of carb cleaner every other fillup couldn't hurt.

Hmmm.  Again, couldn't hurt.  You should keep a spare pair anyway (just in case) so you won't be out anything if you try a new set and you can't detect a difference.

The stock GS doesn't come with a fuel filter, unless you count the screen inside the fuel tank.  I wouldn't do anything drastic in this area just yet.

I don't see how a clogged air filter could cause a momentary problem like that.   :dunno:

It sounds like you're experiencing the near-ubiquitous, highway-speed, fuel starvation problem.  I'd like to know what happens if you switch to the PRI position on the frame-mounted petcock when the "stutter" occurs....

If you can stand to do it, please PM me (or start a new thread) with the details of your route.  I'd be happy to create a Streets & Trips map of it.  (And I'm always curious to hear about trips like this anyway, especially since I had to bypass the Going To The Sun highway on last summer's trip to BC - most of the park was closed because of forest fires.  :x )

You didn't happen to take any PICTURES, didya?
