I am considering this as my first bike.  I was wondering how forgiving is this bike? I also heard that the brakes arent very good, is this true? Oh and im 17 so im a n00b. But i have been riding dirt bikes since i was 9. Anything else i should know about this bike? I think it looks amazing in yellow.

Brakes are fine for this bike.  Any bike is only as good as it's rider.
You won't go wrong if you get this as your first bike.
Get yourself a used non-faired model.

If you've spent that much time on dirt bikes.  You'll like everything about the bike.  You are already used to overly soft an spongy suspension.  It is a bit taxing to get used to the exteremely linear power delivery of a four stroke. It will have you missing your explosive powerband and hunting for a rz350.

I gotta disagree about the brakes.  Even after I upgraded the pads to EBC sintered pucks, they never gave me the confidence and stopping power I needed.  Granted my bike is hopped up with exhaust, pods, advancer, dyno jetting, but I really expected more.  Maybe braded lines would have given the confidence I was looking for, or a GSXR caliper swap, but I was ready to move to a new bike.  Just know that the GS is not intended to be a real performance bike, but its perfect for learning on.
