I recently purchased a GS500F and was stunned to find absolutely no exhaust systems listed for this bike.  But...that didn't stop me.  Currently, I am running the Cobra F1R slip on, with a bit of a manual modification:

The Cobra F1R for the GS500E actually has a smaller pipe flange than the exhaust on the GS500F.  So, if anyone tells you the GS500E and the GS500F should be the same...I can tell you from experience, they are not.  BUT...there is a way around that.  Here is what I did.

1\ Mark and cut the stock pipe (removing the stock cansister) as suggested by Cobra.
2\ Purchase Innovation Racing's "Chamber Seal" sealant tape.  Apply the sealant tape to the OUTSIDE of the F1R flange and slip INTO the cut stock pipe.
3\ Purchase aluminum flashing roll from your local Home Depot and cut a strip just about 1/4-1/2 inch wider (one each side) to cover the width of the seam.  Cut it long enough to wrap around 1-1/2 to 2 times the diameter of the pipe.
4\ Place another application of the sealant tape around the outside of the seam and then wrap the aluminum flashing tightly around the seam and over the tape.
5\ Use two steel hose clamps to secure both ends of the alumimum tightly to the pipe and canister on opposite sides of the seam.

Photos of the mod (Ignore the burnt tape marks above the upper clamp...bad first attempt to use a muffler repair kit.  Haven't cleaned off the burn marks yet).

Walla...your own custom fit F1R on a GS500F.

-------------

ALSO...However, I just saw this site for a "fitted" aftermarket system.  Although, the manufacturer doesn't have it listed on their site.  I have an email into them to find out if it is really a fit.

No offense, but you should invest in one of those systems.
Your jerry rigged F1 looks like crap...

no offense.

Well...if I can find one that fits, I most likely will.  But, looks aren't everything either.  The GS500F sounded so wimpy with the stock exhaust I had to give the F1R a try.  Unfortunately, I cut the stock exhaust BEFORE I realized the OD of the pipe was too big.

Honestly, coming from a cruiser/chopper world before picking up another 'sport bike' (ok...standard that looks like a sport bike)...this 'fix' isn't that that noticable due to it being under the foot peg.  There is also the possiblity of using a header wrap like you see on some custom chopper exhaust too to dress it up a bit...if looks are that that important to you.

Although personally I don't think it looks all that bad, compared to some of the stuff I've seen done on racing bikes (duct tape, mismatched color panels, etc).  I'm sure you've probably seen worse being part of a racing club.

And if looks are important...here it is cleaned up a little.

It looks fine. I did a similar technique on my 89 with a $10 D&D gsxr 1100 can. sound and feel are more important than winning some beauty pagent that doesn't exist.

heh.  that kind of makes it look like a mummy bike, or a bike that should be in a full body cast.

your new pipe looks good.

But of course you have to see it and answer all those "Dude, whats wrong with your pipe?" questions.

Anyway, besides looking like a leaky pipe, because it necks down right at the joint, you might be hurting flow instead of helping it. But I guess if all you care about  is making noise, it doesn't matter...

Haven't had to answer a single..."dude what's wrong with your pipe" questions yet.  Most have been "dude nice bike".  Lol.

I don't think the flow is that big of a problem.  The difference is minimal really (the thickness of the pipe wall).  And the flow of the F1R is much less restricted than the stock canister.

Your mod looks better after you cleaned it up.

I think it would look even better if you used a Dremel tool to cut off the excess clamp band material.  Then rotate the bulky screw portion of the clamps to the bottom and towards the rear of the pipe.  That way all you see is two thin bands.

Good luck.

Good points.  Thanks for the input and feedback on the clean up.

For others...I know it may not be the best mod.  But, I just posted here to share what COULD be done, since there doesn't seem to be many options right now for the 04's.

In terms of clamps, you'd be dealing with at least one with a slip on Cobra pipe anyway.  I just had to modify to use two and a plate to bridge the "gap".

The idea of cleaning up the clamps is a great one though.  You can probably be even more neat on cutting the aluminum flashing too. :-)
