Hey everyone.  New to the site and new to the bike.  Just picked up a '95 thats been in storage it's whole life from a friend of mine.  151 actual miles.  Dropped at 91 miles and sat after that until 5 days ago.

I did a thorough cleaning on the carbs and got the machine running actually quite well over 4k rpm's.  It also idles perfectly.  The only issue I have is the low RPM range.  It seems very bogged and then all of a sudden a burst of power.  It's a little dificult to control.  Any thoughts?

Typical for a GS, rejet, i believe that will take care of some of the low end, ignition advancer as well, or even a 15t front sprocket.

Try 1 or 2 #4 brass washers available from ACE Hardware. Put them between the clip and the plastic washer on your carb needles. I used 2 on my 2000 GS and that smoothed it out.

Welcome!

Does it bog in that rpm range in the higher gears? If so, you are lugging the motor in too high a gear. The rpms are to be kept above 4000 in most gears. I only let it below 4000 in first, and no lower than 3500 in second.
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.

Power does not compare to skill.  What good is power without the skill to use it?

good judgement trumps good skills every time.

Yes, thats correct.  It happens in the higher gears also.  Running at that high of an RPM is new to me.  I'm used to cruisers I think.  Thanks for all the input.  Should I try the washers on the needles trick, or is this normal for the bike?

Good for scratch!  I totally glossed over the RPM numbers.

He's right.  If you try to roll on the throttle "under load" (not with the clutch pulled in  ) at 3500 RPM or less, the engine WILL bog down.  I usually cruise between 4K and 5K RPM around town, higher on the highway.  Takeoffs from stoplights will see me at 7K or 8K (briefly).

I only go below 4K when I'm stopping or coasting or when I'm tooling along a flat neighborhood street at 25-35 mph.

I think the bike is OK for now.  Put some more miles on and see if you can't get a better feel for it.

My bike was like a light switch without the washers. It turned on at 5,000rpms. There was nothing below that. With them it's a very smooth increase in both RPMs and matching power increase as the RPMs rise. If yours is on or off like mine was, I'd try it. Otherwise :dunno:
