Bike has been running bad as of late.  Bogging down, hesitation and popping.  I have had the bike for 2 years with no problems.  Today, I decided to look alittle deeper.  I took out the plugs.  They looked pretty good and the gap was correct, so just cleaned them and put back in.  I then decided to take out the air filter and see how that looked(first time I had tried to do this).  To my suprise, the air filter was a K & N.  I am the third owner.  I did not see any air restrictor that was removable as Kerry has mentioned.  The can on the bike is stock.  Could the bike be jetted and still use the original can?  Anyway to tell besides going into the carbs?  What problems could I have if it is not jetted?  The bike does not warm up quickly, so if it is jetted, it isn't doing its job!  Before everyone says to do a search...the search function is not working..tried that first!  Thanks.

Wayne,

Your bike was probably rejeted.  I got a K& N  right after i got my bike. It ran terribly if the restrictor was removed and i have a stock exhaust.  When i rejetted i removed the restrictor and it runs fine without it.  You up for a ride tomorrow

hey guys,
I gues this is the NJ thred...
K & N fillters need to be cleaned every so often, if it looks bad, then you can try that. Also, did you try the "carb cleaning the lazy way"?

QuoteHowever on cleaning carbs... well dont get obsessive there, the bike spits and spews carbon all over the place and the intake lets in fine dust etc... even a set of carbs off a nice running bike do have some crud in them... so clean is great but if you cleaned it before dont do it again... wont make a diff. Also I drop fully assembles carbs into a trough of gas with yamaha carb cleaner. Dont do with anyother one like chem tool cos that will eat rubber. Yamaha one is basically ammonia based stuff that I dip and lift them a few times, let it sit, and repeat. Clean all kawi/honda and 4 cyl keihein carbs that way only.

Before that though, look for a vacume leak.

I would disagree - bike is probably not jetted. An in box K&N without restrictor will still run fine - lean, but reliable. Long warmup times, etc. is indicitive of that.  It would be a good idea to jet it properly...but it ran this long without damage, it's not going to kill it to continue.

Definitely clean and oil the filter, but I doublt your trouble lies there - it worked fine before. Vacuum is a good possibility. Fuel is another. Do you have an inline fuel filter? If so, replace it. If not, you may want to drain the tank and check the pickup screen. These tanks are prone to rusting from the inside out and clogging the fuel screen in the tank. And it's not a bad idea to add an inline filter.

OK How did my quote come in this thread...
Anyway... clean and oil your air filter... and possibly your crabs as well... 2 years is a long time for air filter... needs cleaning and oiling. BTW to work like a restrictor... 2 of those ladies ankle warmers... pop sox what ever they are... on on the filter and one in the filter pinned actoss its mouth and held opn with a ring or a disk of some kind in the bottom of the filter so the inside one stays open... does that make sense...
The 2 pop sox's will kill your flow just enough to make it just like paper ... and see if you problem stays or goes away... BTW 125/40/3 and 1 #4 washer is correct stock jetting... so rejet to the sweet spot.... but the other experiment will tell you why the problem happened.
Cool.
Srinath.
