speed limiter?

I recently got my 95 gs500e out of the shop. This is the first time that it has run right since i got the bike. i have noticed that in first i can hit redline, but occasionally in second, all the time in third and sometimes in fourth and fifth when i hit 8k rpm, the bike acts like there is a speed limiter on it. it will kick the rpms down to about 5 or 6k.

i ran some searches but couldnt find anything. any help would be awesome

is this normal? what could it be if there is no rev limiter?

no rev limiter that i know of... but from what you describe it's the wrong jetting for the carbs.

do a search there. i know if the jets are too large you will experince a "dead" rpm range, where the bike seems it doesnt want to keep pulling.

as far as i know the bike hasnt been rejetted though.

what aftermarket parts do you have on the bike? if any?

i recently purchased my 96 GS and the guy i bought it from had re-jetted it for an aftermarket pipe, BUT never purchased/ installed the pipe.

currently when i make it to speed there is that dreaded "dead" spot between 6 and 7k rpm.  once i nurse the bike above that point it keeps pulling.

if anything, it's worth pulling the carbs and checking if there is even the smallest bit of doubt.

hope it helps

as far as i know it is all stock. before i got it back from the shop (when it ran) it never did that. now it does. the shop did a valve job. they didnt get into the carbs or the lower part of the engine at all.

could it be the petcock maybe? i have read about the fuel starvation threads and my bike did that before i took it in. now it doesnt, but i will try it in reserve and/or prime tonight. maybe that could be it.

this doesnt seem like a dead spot though, it just all of a sudden loses ALL power between 8-9k. it will drop it to about 5-6k and then do it again at 8-9k if i get on the gas.

The GS's "redline" should be at around 10~11K rpm, and its not a rev limiter. Its vavle float, litterally the vavle springs can't open and close fast enough and so they are slapping back and forth against the piston and the seats!  :o

Its very obvious, a loud rattling sound from the engine. If you are just suffering from a loss of power and from much further down the rev range, your problem is else where. I would guess either jetting or something electrical.

Take it back to the shop and tell them to try again.
