hi

well, i am new here and signed up b/c i have decide to get a gs500f '05(next year) and this forum seems a lot nicer and knows what they are talking about. I have never owned my own bike before and just wanted to know what are some essential tools that i should pick up before next season so i can do minor repair and maintenance.  Or if you could recommend a tool set

Im sorry if the question is dumb but I am a total newbie to bikes

metric tool set with sockets and wrenches. Metric allen keys, a torque wrench and you should be set.

the bike is metric in tools, so get a metric tool set.

Don't forget the service manual and use the link at the top of this page since it helps this forum.
Common sense in not very common.

Tire pressure gauge (use it often), and a tape measure (for checking chain tension).

A few screwdrivers are always handy as well.

a torque wrench is crucial when putting bolts back into the aluminum engine case.

try a search for tool kit or Kerry's tool kit. I seem to remember Kerry posting something in this regard. Or find one of his posts and click on his website link-might be there.

good luck. Great choice of first bike too.

tire pressure gauge is most important.

Welcome!

Get the manual first as there is also a list of tools in the manual; metric tools. And, yes, I'll second (or third) the tire pressue guage.

Some other useful tools are a helmet, jacket, gloves, boots and pants...and maybe a book, Proficient Riding, or two books, Twist of the Wrist...
