Just checking: You cleaned the dipstick and reinserted it with the bike vertical, right?  (And you did NOT screw the dipstick back in, but just let it sit on top of the threaded hole?)

For an illustration of how significant the measuring angle is, see THIS post.

And yes, most auto oils will work fine.  You might want to avoid some of the newer oils (SJ and up?) with friction modifiers.

:o  In that case, it's even worse than I thought.

Make sure you add some oil before you ride it again.

I would think so but not sure how these things work in the U.S.
Your priority is the GET SOME OIL IN THERE before you get a big problem even if you can't get a filter this time.

You should be able to pick up a filter at Autozone or something like it. The #'s are...

HiFlo - HF133

Suzuki - 485537-001 (filter), 485563-001 (gasket)

STP - SMO-00

Fram - CH6000

Purolator - MC16800

If you get the Fram or STP double check the number printed on the actual filter casing, not just the box. Evidentally they've mislabeled some in the past. But like everyone else said... get some oil in there before anything...
