I think Un*x admin is a very broad field, which should help with opportunity.  It's a tough time for the industry; many jobs have been replaced by new positions with reduced compensation.  But at least there are still jobs there.
You cannot escape our master plan!

I have Unix admin experience ... lots of it... more like managing a bunch of apps that run on unix. Old school ... and I will make more than 94... cos then I had to have visa...  :x
The thing is actuate/UNIX/Siebel admin is a niche... no idea if that's good or not... just that its a niche.... time will tell... BTW first time I am looking for work with that experience... actuate is relatively new, and I started doing it 2 years ago...
Cool.

Hey, sorry to hear about your job. You never know, it might be the push to something you love to do. Good luck job hunting.
Showing my age, just not acting it.

TheGoodGuy

well he had one interview in westlake village. He is a programmer but he does UNIX admin too. He had been programming and doing Unix Admin stuff in the last job.

He seems fairly confident. I havent talked to him in detail.

OK we need that emoticon... it should simply jump and fall every which way and any color and anywhere... Nothing political implied here ... please stop the beating... please... but an emoticon like that will be cool to take care of those wafflers, the reneggers, the wishy washy types...
Cool.

If you don't mind a serious drop in pay, you could go to the academic world.  It has been hard to hire folks with your kind of experience since they can make so much more elsewhere.  The hours in academia are better if you want to go the education route of the IT.  Schools always need IT for their own services too.  One can do academics AND consult.  Do you know anything about data mining?

Linuxrules.  Cool.

Datawarehouse yes, mining OK depends on the ETL tool, but minimal actual work, but well aware of all the interesting features and issues... Now ... where and who has a data mining opening... love to take a crack at it...

in the mean time he is taking the week off to run some errands.

Bingo!

As a mathematician with a mathematician/industrial engineer wife, we've had at least three invitations from friends to drop what we were doing and join their companies.  In all three cases, within 1-3 months those companies were laying people off, once including the friend who wanted us to join up.  Those companies were AT&T, United Airlines, and American Airlines.  Now you know why someone might be nervous.

An engineering faculty guy once said that these companies will hire anyone when they're "hiring," and fire anyone when they're laying off, and there's not much rhyme nore reason.  They'll hire morons when they're hiring, and fire their best assets when downsizing.  I don't know how much truth there is, but he believed it enough to remain in a faculty position.

Just food for thought.  Otherwise I can send you some contact info, though the post was a while ago so I don't know about it.  I can also try to scare up the AT&T (or was it Bell Labs?) contact if you like.  That's in New Jersey (which, as a born Illinoisan, scares me right there!), so it's closer to you.

OK that makes sense... I have also heard the bank (B of A speak for B of A) typically lays off people that can sorta fend for themselves... reason being... they are much less likely to sue. Now they also have the routine habit of picking someone that has a total mismatch skillset and train him out the wazoo to a new position... like in my case... besides they also have to pay the qualified/experienced more... so bigger savings axing them...
New jersey... man the Srinath factory has no chance of ever cranking up in that place... OK Lemme ask you... how many bike parts are made in Jersey...   Dallas ok I might start the factory up again after I get situated. In the mean time...factory is cranking out anything at top speed... Oh well lets see what people need.
Cool.
