the problem....almost every 2 seconds it turns a little to the left or right so i have to lean a little to the opposite direction...it's not a huge deal but worries me what would happen if i go 80mph ++....

the front tire/wheel spins freely and straight when i lift the front end...also looks straight when i ride.. the forks are straight...the rotor is straight and caliper is good...the triple is also straight...

anyone have any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

Kerry

I don't know what to tell you about the tracking problems.  But I see from the second photo that you've got a good Companionship + Alarm solution figured out.  :)

Maybe the bearings around the steering stem put a dent into their races?  With front wheel off the ground, if you turn the front end from lock to lock, do you feel any points of resistance, or does the wheel seem to want to pop into any particular position?

Also: what order did you tighten things down, with the pinch bolts and fork brace bolts?  Tighten things with the front end in the air, or down on the ground?  Bounce the front suspension after tightening the top pinch bolts, but before tightening the lower stuff?

I'm not saying that any of these things would definitely cause a problem; I haven't experienced a problem like you describe.  I'm just running over some of the things I can think of which might affect front-end behavior.

Did you ever have the frame checked on the Compu-track?

That front end damage may have tweaked the steering head or something to make it not go straight.  Did you touch the rear wheel at all?  Sometimes the hash marks aren't perfect so the rear wheel could be slightly off.  Something may have jarred that rear wheel to move a bit off in the crash.  just throwing out ideas :dunno:

Your repair work looks great though :thumb:

Wow that thing was messed up.  All my main ideas have already been posted.  Though it is a long shot check you air pressures.  Another option might be your tires, are they both the same?  Is the front one the one from the crash?  If so I suppose there is a slight possibility that it may be damaged in some way.

Check that the back wheel is in line with the front wheel. I've seen instructions on the net, but don't remember where.  :dunno:  Try a google on it.

cant say for sure, but check the height of the forks in the clamps and then at the fork brace, must be the pic cuz it looks off.  check to makesure your swingarm bearings didnt get hammered to hell.  did you replace the stearing neck bearings or put in used ones?

the front tire is brand new....the rear is like 4 months old....2 months old when i crashed so it shouldn't be the tires....could be the steering bearing...

i'll look into it....thanks

is there any paint flaking around the steering neck... on the frame...by now it should have a bit of rust peaking through?

no, i haven't noticed any....

today i let go of the handlebars when going about 40 in neutral and the bike pulled to the right....then i leaned my body to the left and the bike kept on going straight...

i'm gonna adjust the rear wheel soon and loosen all the front end parts (triple clamps, fork brace) and tighen it back....

in what order do i have to tighten the front end?

GRU

does anyone know in what order should i tighten the bolts on the forks? including the triple tree?
thanks

Kerry

Will this do?  (From the Haynes manual)

My guess would be:
make sure the forks are the same height out the top of the triple tree(*)
Tighten the bottom pinch bolts.  Add the caps.
Tighten upper pinch bolts and fork brace bolts "finger tight" or "screwdriver tight".
Bounce the front end up and down firmly a few times.
Tighten the upper pinch bolts and fork brace bolts a bit more
Bounce the wheel again
Tighten the upper pinch and fork brace bolts all the way.

This is just a guess.  The idea is that if your fork tubes are straight, you want them to tell you where they should sit, and not the other way 'round.  The only really fixed point you have is the top of the triple tree and the top edge of the fork tubes.  The rest is up to them.

(*)I used a tire tread depth guage for this, since it does a good job reading in 1/32" increments: try to hold the wide flat part flat on the top of the fork tube, then push the plunger till it hits the triple tree, then read the height.  Another option would be to push the fork tubes too high, then force them back down using a straightedge (like a metal level), until they are uniformly flush with the top triple.  Then tighten the lower pinch bolts to hold them in-place.

But I checked the height of the tubes before I put the caps on.  With the caps on, the height might be different from one side to the other based on the condition of the o-ring, torque, etc.  I've never heard of anyone else checking height with a tool, so I doubt that it's really necessary.

EDIT: Kerry beat me to the punch.  And he reminded me that you can't tighten the top pinch bolts until the caps are in.

make sure the spring height is the same for both forks too.
