more of a car guy and just got into bikes this year.love my 04 gs500 and would like to keep it running right so was going to grease chain before i put her up for the winter. I was wondering which grease or oil to use and the best way of applying that product. thanks

u don't want to apply grease....Alls it will do is splatter off on to your wheel  :x  :x

The best thing is to get a can of specificaly chain lube for motorcycles. A can will last you a decade. N-e ways put the bike up on the center stand in neutral WITH-OUT THE ENGINE RUNNING and apply the lube to the chain as you spin the back tire. The main purpose of the lube it to keep the rubber o-rings in the chain from cracking and deforming so that's why you have to use the right lube that won't damage the o-rings and the grease just won't get down into all the nooks and crannies.

I use Pro Honda HP Chain Lube.  Its a teflon coating that sprays on and dries after a few minutes.  A greasy lube would attract dirt and accelerate chain and sprocket wear.  First you use a chain cleaner, that also comes in a spray can, then apply the lube.  I don't really like having to get dirty if I don't have to and I see a spray lube as the way to go.  Less time I  spend washing my hands, means more time riding.  I don't even know if you can buy a non-spray lube anymore.  Good riddens and good luck.

I have been putting the bike on the center stand, gear in neutral then cleaning the chain with a stiff brush and simple green and hose pressure while rotating the wheel by hand. Ride around the block a few times to heat and dry the chain. Put back on the center stand and follow the same procedure to spray with chain wax.  Let it dry awhile and ride like you stole it for 600 more miles. Does this seem right to you guys?
