RIP RICH! We'll miss you buddy!

For those that have had their stator break apart, has the bike been down of the left side? Not just a stopped tip over but at speed. Did you inspect the inside of the case cover for cracks?

The reason I am asking...I have another members case cover that had been in a crash. It is scuffed on the outside but is not ground through and held oil fine. No immediate signs of other damage. But there are extensive cracks on the inside, especially around the mounting boss for the stator. These cracks could lead to failure of the stator due to being out of alignment of the magnet.

From se7enty7 pic of the stator, looks like there is epoxy on the inside.

Nope on mine...crashed many times left and right, but 35K was the last one ... GS at 43K... and 4 years later ... BTW mine was almost certainly starter clutch clunking which I ignored for 6 months ... But its old hat by now...

there is epoxy.  IMO I think that's what caused mine.. here's why.  I bought a BRAND NEW stator, and an assumed brand new magnet.  Guess what happened on FIRST startup? CLUNK CLUNK.  Broken magnet, broken stator.

Either my crank is bent (unlikely) or my case cover is bent/jarred.  I bought a case cover with a stator and am looking for a magnet..

If a chunk broke off would it be possilbe for it to crack the engine case?

Mine was wrecked on the left side

I guess it would be possible to damage the mounting boss of the stator (and crack the left case cover) if the magneto and stator came in contact with each other while the motor was spinning.

Hmm... I seem to have missed the later parts of this thread

My bike looks like it was dropped on the left side before I bought it. I don't know any details, however. There were some small cracks (I'm not even sure I would call them cracks) on the inside of the stator cover but I don't think that they were damage from a crash. I think that I have a picture of it. I'll post it later today if I can find it.

Srinath disagree's, but I am convinced (convinced!) that mine was caused from a crash that disrupted the stator cover.  Mine had stress cracks and was actually broken (there is epoxy in the pics that repaired it) before I bought it.

I didn't find this out until buying a NEW stator, and NEW (used) magnet, and they BOTh got destroyed when first starting the bike.  Now I've got a new case cover, new stator, and used magnet.  So.. hopefully it goes better this time.

Is there a special trick to getting the case cover on without letting the stator get magnetized to the magnet?  I'm going to use two or three longer bolts as "guide bolts' to get it on.

The Buddha

I dont disagree ... just that mine was not from that ... BTW the case guards are cheapinsurance that goats syndrome doesn't happen like an epidemic ...

ohhh... I thought you said mine probably wasn't cause by it..  :dunno:

yeah srinath's case guards AREN'T coming off my bike.. lol

Yep, that is the best way I have found to do it.

AHHHH it's FINALLY over!!!!  I replaced my case cover, stator, and magnet.  When I rev to 5k my voltage jumps to 14.5+v.... (near 15?) Yay!!!!

Hopefully my RR isn't bad as well :-/

My experience to add to the Goat's disease research (maybe we should set up a research fund  ):
Here is what I found
While my magnet did not shatter, the epoxy came off the magnet and I am guessing it is from a slight impact.
Back in early September, I was hit on the right side by a car at fairly low speed, then my bike went on its left side.  The impact of the car was enough to knock me off the bike and take out the ignition parts and break the crankcase cover.

On the left side, the only damage I noticed was a bent footpeg and scratches on the handlebar and stator cover.  I never thought any more of that.  My hypotheses are that (a) the impact on the right side was enough to send a shock through and knock the epoxy loose, (b) when the bike went down to the pavement it was just enough to knock the epoxy loose, but not break the magnets, or (c) none of the above, it happened before I owned my bike or just at random

yup... so anyone with banged up case covers might want to pull them off and take a look

in my case, my left case cover was bent... so I destroyed 2 magnets and 2 stators.....

My case cover is scratched.  Do I have to drain the oil to take the cover off?

The Buddha

Well The oil will slowly drip out ... you might lose a quart in a month if you let it be ... but you're taking it off a few mins ... makes no diff will drip oil when its full or drained ... cos that cover gets a bit of oil and that will not ever get drained off when you drain your oil ...

If you lean the bike to the right the oil will flow away and you can remove the cover without draining. Even if you decide to drain the oil, drain it in to a clean container and then you can put it back in afterwards.
