cleaning the gas tank

I decided to empty my 96 GS gas tank out for inspection of rust and gunk. Ooof  :o  It looks horrible in there. Plus, I couldn't get ALL of it out; there seems to be some pockets in the bottom that like to harbor bits of gas.
Any clever ideas as to cleaning it out good? It's kinda hard to get in there, so I'm assuming you just run some chemicals through  :dunno:   Couldn't find anything about it in the Hanes manual. I'm working on storing it for the winter

It is pain in the @$$ to get all the gas out.  I recently POR'ed my tank and did not bother to get all the gas out since I was going to dump in the acid anyway.  You can try to get most of the gas (or whatever else) out with a hand operated siphon of some sort (should be available at the auto parts shop or even hardware store for a few bucks).

How about using your (worst enemy's) towel or some other kind of absorbent cloth?  Stuff it in the hole, slop it around in the tank, turn the tank upside down and extract the cloth again.

You may not even need to stuff the whole thing in.  Maybe leave some sticking out while you flip the tank upside down and slosh the remaining fuel up against it?

I've never tried it myself - just a thought.

To get the last bits of fluid out I used the towel trick. Shake as much out as you can, then cram a few dry rags in there. Shake it around, grab the towel (with a coat hanger if necessary), wring it out and repeat... It works, even if it is slow and unpleasant.

I kreemed the one I got from AdamR ... I have a plate made for the top that fits the gas filler and I put inner tubes as a gasket to seal it ... and the petcock with the inner filter taken out and inner tube there ...seal up the tank...
Long process treating it ... however I might have used that Jasco primer and prep ... only issue with that is... it takes the rust and turns it into a flaky enamelish substance ...and as its curing you will see that it bubbles up sorta into blisters ... break those and let the liquid attack it again and you'll be good ... how do you do it in a tank... i wanted to drop a large quantity of nickels ... like $3 worth ... and have them scrape it up ... or abunch of beebees or nuts ... whatever you think is easy to get out... Looong tweezers and the petcock hole...
Its a good and yet gentle method ... Kreem uses muriatic acid and its pretty harsh...and stinky.
Cool.
