Ok, so the guy I bought the engine on ebay from is trying to gouge me for 166 dollars on shipping the engine from Louisiana to wisconsin.

WHo can lead me in the dirrection of a freight/shipping company who is not going to screw me.

That's not high for shipping an engine. You do know how much they weigh ...?

Some places will want almost twice that to ship an engine.

just a thought, then why when I went to ups and asked how much they quoted me 100.

And if I get it sent to my dads work its sub 70 dollars?

Going UPS ground- best  estimate is about 110-120$  . If he's taking it to a retail location it will cost even more (not having an account).  Plus we aren't talking about shipping a fender here...he's gotta hump that 150 pound box around...(and find a strudy enough box and package it up secure).

For a non account shipment at a retail location with insurance  for ground is about 152$  Hell if he's buying a box from there too....that could be your other 14$...

You paid about 200$ for the engine ( a STEAL) plus you're getting carbs and a wiring harness and a cdi...(anything else?) The carbs are worth the "extra" shipping cost alone.  Most trucking companies would probably charge you well over that 166$.

You could sell the carbs here to make up the difference.  

How do you ship a block anyways?   I think "box" is not the right term here; "crate" is more like it.  To ship it right, I'd probably nail together a small pallet: two 2x4 skids, with a 12x12 piece of plywood over it; strap the block down to the skids with two tie-down straps.... then build a box around it with a 2x4 frame and plywood sides.  It would probably take most of a sheet of plywood, and a 6' 2x4, and the straps... at least $20 in materials alone, plus an hour of time.

In that case, UPS charges, plus $50 would be minimum; UPS charges plus $75 would be fair.

Your biggest risk is that he'd put it in poor packaging, and ship without insurance.

Ups doesn't do pallets... -- you can put a small engine like the GS's in a  heavy duty box-just  needs to be well padded and a strong box...You want the engine snug in the padding...so it doesn't move around in the box.

I've shipped inline 4's ...I get two pallets...one smaller than the other...screw the small one down on top of the other one...get a a junk car tire and sit the tire on the small pallet with the engine sitting in the tire...strap the engine down with some webbing then build a plywood box around the engine and small pallet. The extra pallet height keeps the forks on the forklifts from getting to the engine and the tire acts like a shock absorber.....


But you can ship a  parrallel twin like the gs's in a box...

gs engine weighs around 150lbs. Forward-air is the cheapest shipper. Only draw back is that it's not a door to door service, you have to drop off/pick up at thier locations. Last gs engine I shipped cost around 65 dollars from buff ny to atlanta ga.

Try FedEx ground.  They will do up to 150 pounds to a commercial address for fairly cheap, probably  less than 100 bucks.  However, the shipper does have to box up the motor and lug it to a shipping center which he or she should be compensated for (handling fee).  Be careful though, as the motor with oil in it will be very close to 150lbs and if you're 0.1 pound over they won't ship.

You aren't supposed to  to ship them with a crankcase full of oil.  Safety/fire hazard thing....

Forward Air (despite the name, it's ground freight).  It cost just a little over $100 to ship my 325e engine, which is quite a bit bigger and weighs a lot more than a GS engine...

Ja, drain all of the gas and oil out first!  Partly for safety, partly to make it lighter (and maybe cheaper).

Pretty cheap solutions, but it might be even cheaper if you have it delivered from your work to the receiver's work.  Some of these places charge up the yin for residental pick-up and receiving.
