I have been searching the web for a while and can't find anything.  I am looking for the size of the screw that holds on the trip knob. I ordered a new one at the dealer and it appears to be on indefinate backorder.

Does anyone know what size it is, or does anyone have an extra?

HELP!!!!!!

OK, that's a pretty good way to have your post looked at.
Sorry, I don't know the size but probably your best bet would be to take the whole assembly, on the bike if need be, to your local nut and bolt merchant.  They will have measuring gauges and can fit you with something and it will likely be cheaper than the dealer anyway.  Good luck.

Any luck yet?  If not, I'll be willing to check it out for you if you can assure me that removing the screw for measurement will not entail a complete disassembling of the housing to put it back.  ;)  (I am short on time being the end of semester and lots of stuffs that needs tending to :guns: .)

Cheers,

I don't know exactly the size of it, but BikeBandit.com has the screw listed at $0.66.  Not sure if it's in stock, but if you go this route you have $6.00 flat shipping to deal with.

:dunno:

Oops, also forgot you could try ronayers.com and see if they have it stock if BikeBandit does not.

I happen to be tearing down my project GS and have all the hardware loose for the instruments.

Diameter: 2mm Length (minus head): 6mm Thread: ~14 per 6mm length

The head is #1 Philips or slightly smaller. There's the basic information.

I also happened to pick up a parts cow GS that looked like someone tried to remove the instruments with a fire axe. The speedo was totalled but the trip screw was intact! A little dirty but totally intact.

Try to find one locally with the information above. Worse case I have a nut and bolt distributor about 2 miles from the house. I'll take one tomorrow and see if they can match it. If not, the fire axe special is yours with a SASE. :)

Awesome!  Thank you so much for the offer. I will see if I can find one.  If not not, maybe I will hit you up on that offer. Thanks again

No problem. Great timing for you and me both.
I plan to make a hardware run tomorrow anyway. Got to find a larger wheel puller to remove my alternator rotor.

If the speedo is out of the bike, take it with you to be certain of the screw. I had pitched the totaled speedo but fished it out of the can just to check on that screw. Your lucky day!

I'll be watching here. If needed, I can PM you my address so that you can send the SASE to me. The cost of two stamps is just about the cost of that screw. Silly isn't it?  :?

Sounds like an M2. Hereabouts I'd hunt for these in some scrapped electric equipment. In the US of course cou are shot...

The local nut & bolt guy did not have anything that small. Lowe's went down to 4mm only. I didn't think about the hobby shop until getting home. The autoparts place was a joke for hardware. They literally had three empty revolving displays.

Unless you try a hobby shop, many model airplane engines are Japanese, I may be your best bet!

There are specialty hardware companies like Small Parts in Florida but to obtain one from them would be silly and subject to minimum order quantity.

What happened to the original anyway? Oxidation due to exposure? Ooops, where did it go?

None-the-less, my offer still stands.

Good hint. At least here many RC (radio control) parts are M2.
