Highway Helmet "malfunction" experience

While riding home on the highway this evening, the plate that holds my visor to my helmet just popped off!  I don't mean the visor itself, but the plate that's screwed onto the helmet that the visor mounts to.  Not a fun experience, expecially going 125 km/hr (80 miles/hr) with temperatures around 0C (32F).

I was checking my blind spot before getting into the passing lane (HWY 427 just south of the 401/409 exit for any Toronto residents) and as I turned my head sideways, I felt the visor pop off and nearly wrap itself around the opposite way.  I figured it might have popped out of its mount.   I cruised to the next exit while using my left hand to hold the visor against the helmet to ensure it didn't break off completely (it was flapping around pretty hard).  After getting off my bike and examining it, I realized that the two screws holding the visor mount had come completely undone.  One of them, in fact, had falled off.  I pulled out my trusty swiss army knife and screwed the remaining one back in.

HJC AC11 http://www.hjchelmets.com/ac11_solid.htm.  I can tell you this much -- I'm not planning on buying another  one of these.  The helmet was bought just this July (a few weeks before my GS500F).   If any one else ownes one of these, please make sure to tighten your visor mount screws.  I wouldn't have been as worried if it was the summer.  But having to ride to the next exit in windchill weather with the fear of the visor completely tearing off was not an all together pleasant experience.

Phone up HJC and give 'em hell man, that shouldn't happen on that new of helmet (or any helmet for that matter) make them give you a refund and don't let them give you the run around, if that person on the phone can't help you tell them you want to speak to their manager, all the way up the line. Good luck and stick it to the man!

That really ought to be covered under some sort of manufacture warrenty!.
That would really piss me off......

So far 20k on my Shoie Rf900, no problems.

12,000 miles with my HJC with no probelms. All my coworkers here have HJC, and combined, probably 50,000 this year with no problems on theirs either. I would give HJC a call.

I have lost parts off of my Shoei helmets and never thought about calling them to Buddha Loves You. Screws can and will come lose. Those screws usually allow for adjustment of the visor to tighten the seal. Usually they are made of plastic so they expand and contract with varying temperatures, they will come lose again. Checking your helmet before riding is no different than checking your bike. There is probably a warning in the owner manual about checking those screws.

Guess you better have Suzuki's phone number handy when your bike losses a screw.
Common sense in not very common.

I've had my HJC CL-12 for 4 years now and I had a problem with a plastic piece of the lock be ing broken.  I wrote HJC an e-mail and they responded immediately by sending me new pieces in the mail.  I was just asking where I could buy some because I broke it screwing around.  I'm sure if you call and talk to somebody they would definitely take care of you.

Yeah, that's what the sales guy at the store I picked up my helmet told me today.  He said his Shoei helmet also needs to be tightened regularily, so the problem isn't specific to HJC.  Interestingly, all of the HJC AC11 helmets in the shop had new plastic screws, but my helmet has metal ones.. so he pulled one from a Shoei helmet and it fit my visor mounting plate perfectly.

Now I know, and knowing is half the battle..  :)

It sucks buying a $500 helmet and having a pos screw fall out. I love my XSPII helmets but the visor adjusting plates are tough to keep tight. Luckily I had parts from an old trashed helmets that I could use.
