On a 2004 GS, are the front forks compatible with all other years?  Alternatively - any go fast bits (i.e. gsxr forks) that are a (relatively) simple bolt on?

Have a line on one that met something immovable straight on.

dgyver

GS fork tubes are 37mm, not many other bikes share this size. Other options will require replacing the triples as well. Katana front ends are almost a direct bolt on and uses the same wheel as the GS. See the FAQ forum for more info and an install write-up. I know some GSXR front ends can be made to fit but I don't have any more info on this swap, yet. Do a search as I know it has been done.
Common sense in not very common.

there is no evidence that the 2004 gs500f stock forks are any different than the forks used on earlier models. Be careful though because the pre 96 (I think) bikes had different brake calipers so you should look for a 97-04 for a direct replacement of just the forks.

I have a '96 GSXR 750 front end on my track bike, and a '92 GSXR 750 front end on my street bike.  Simple it is not.  You have to purchase a complete front end including triple clamps, wheel, fork tubes, brakes, rotors, axle, fender, clip ons, brake lines and master cylinder.

You then have to press out the steering stem, and if you are lucky, your GS has a pressed in stem, then you can press it out and put it in the GSXR triples.  Even uses the same steering head bearings.

If the stem is welded in, then you have to go to a maching shop and have one made.

Additionaly, you have to figure out a way to mount the headlight and gauges, and you have to remove the ignition switch from the GS top triple and install it in the GSXR. Also, the later model GSXR used a electronic speedo, so you will have to deal with that.  The '92 still used a cable drive.

The Katana front end is all of the same, except that you can use the stock wheel.

Having said all that, if you can find a complete set up for around $500, it is definatley worth it.  Both my front ends were at that price range, so they are out there.
