:dunno: My bike was bought new,it's stock standard , it has always  power slumped with a jerk as you back the throttle off, when you throtle on there is a power lag, and please understand I'm not talking lack of power which I know is common to all GS 500 under 4000 rev's   ,I'm talking no acceleration for a split second, doesnt sound like long I know but picture this, you throttle down into a sharp corner so that you can give it a handfull to accelerate out of the corner, the  power dies as you throattle off, your leaned over hard and coasting becuase even though you have already throttled on again the lagg's left you coasting with little traction for that split second,it's not throttle play or anything simple like that.Okay I didnt like it but accepted that that is just the way GS's are bloody under powered and dangerous in a corner, untill by accident the dealer put in the wrong airfilter, a far less restrictive filter which made the bike run leaner, top end was tottaly starved, absolutly no pick up over 4500 rev's no surprise there  but the bottom end was instantly transfomed, no more power slump,no more power lag, positive power an traction when backing off and throtalling on, smoother, can pull mutch better at low revs, eg doesnt labour when slow rideing, stop start rideing in traffic before was painfull, had to ride the clutch the whole time or the bike started jerking, now it doest. So what the hell is going on? how does makeing the bottom end leaner on a stock GS improve it,s bottom preformance out of sight.I wondered if the choke was stuck but it doesnt seem to be ,havent been into the carb's yet {too scared I'll bugger it worse} but from the out side the slide is traveling back and forth thith some play when the choke is off,{gee's this is getting long winded :nono: sorry cant think how to describe this any shorter}Any way, what I need to know from you other 2002 owners is are all 2002's like this with the power lag and lousy low speed preformance or is it just mine, any body elses bike improve down low by being leaner .The obvious solotion seems to be rejet, for how I went there check 01-02 caburetor's different  :dunno:

by the way you wrote all this is sounds like the carbs arn't working good...are you sure nobody owned the bike before you? maybe they messed something up

i would recommend rejetting because you seem to know at least a little about your bike and how everything works so i think you can do it....

if you have any more questions feel free to ask but we can't help you much untill you give us more info on the bike....like, did you check if both sparkplugs are producing a spark (very important) and what color are the sparkplugs, if they are 2 different colors it may be because only one is working or one cyl is getting gas and the other not so much....also, check the carbs if they are sealed against the rubber boots (intake)

Actually you may have a float gone high ... wear does that to it ... now also putting in a free filter and making the low end leaner ... see you are assuming somehitng ... the super tight filter was be possibly so tight it killed the flow to the point the bike got no air nor gas ... cos you need air flow for gas ... free flow in the filter makes it leaner yes but only above 5K ...
OK here is the same thing in different terms ... most filters ... be it paper, foam or K&N really make any difference only above 5-6K ... even clamp on K&N's basically start affecting it after 1/2 throttle ... under that all filters if clean can keep the flow up to where the engine is happy ... if your bike's filter was so clogged that it kills the flow under 5K ... well time to clean/change it ... regardless of what it was doing to the running.
Cool.

How many miles on it?  Have you checked your valves?  Believe me, tight valves can all kinds of weird things!

my 03 model has a similar power lag and i know exactly what you mean about being abit scary on a corner its happened to me though my bike is fair new i did one oil change at 600kms and it had another with the first service at just over 1000kms im not going to get into all the technical stuff ill leave that to the mechs while its under warranty but i just imagined it was cause of the low end lack of power for the bike and maybe because the bike is still fair new it may be still a be tight/loose hope you work your problem out. ill mention it to the mechs next time and see what they say since im not the only one with the said problem. c0r.

Okay,Yes I know for sure I was the first and only owner,I watched as they did the pre-delivery setup, the bike is still under warranty{we get 2 years, unlimited km here} as such all servises have been carried out on time by the dealer I purchased it from,{mind you this is the same dealer that tried rejetting the bike in my thread 01-02 carburetors} The bike has 27500 km or 17187.5 miles for non km people, and as said before it was like this from day 1,being a new bike I could'nt get a test ride only got to sit on it but I've owned a 1982 GSX 400 and a GS 450 previous and been very happy with them so had no reason to dought the 500 as a bike, had I been able to test ride it and had it been as it is I would never have bought it. I'm not new to bikes 22 years rideing them, owned a GSX 400, GS 450, Z 750, XJ 650 and now the GS 500,with the exception of the Z 750 {it was a lemon that handled like a brick} the 500 is the worst of the bunch only because of the bottom end problem, otherwise it's a great bike. The mix up of the filter's was the dealer's chicken up,by accident a 01D00 was put in which is a genuine Suzuki filter but for an earlier model. The 01D7 is what Suzuki used on my 2002 500,as said before the bottom end improve out of sight with the incorrect filter but top end was starved.I took it back to the dealer explaning what was happening, thats when he found the mix up,didnt have the correct filter in stock so he checked I wasnt so lean as to melt the tops out of the pistons and said leave that filter in till the correct 1 arrived, the old 1 was already in the dust bin so for 2 days I rode around with nothing above 5000 revs but far more torque down low than I had ever had before, it was luxury, the difference was incredable{probably not as good as a well running GS but compared to what mine had been}.The new correct filter came in and was installed and the bike was straight back to what it always was, power slump, power lag, lousy low speed preformance,so much so that I put the incorrect filter back in,the bike isnt even safe the way it leaves you coasting in corner's,I'd told the dealer as much several times before the filter mix up to be told that's just how the GS's are,the incorrect filter proves otherwise even if I dont know why. For reference the 2 filters are the same except the for one haveing a considerably smaller air entry and a internal sleeve which I figure has to make it heaps more restrictive, thats the 1 that is supposed to be on my bike and makes it run lousy down low,As for the plugs, there regularly replaced as to service requirements, both the same colour,a whiteish grey {lean} and that is regardless of which filter is installed. :dunno:
There,I think I got everyones quaries, hope it makes sense to someone because I'm stumped,I take it this is not a common thing for the 2002,I thought it might have been all of them,if it is'nt then Suzuki should fix the problem under warranty :(
