So the question is what was the aprox. gain from these two mods..?

Specifically for the Spocket ....?

Thanks
Pavlos

Well, the sprocket gives you a better low-end gear ratio.  What this means is that you will be able to basically accelerate more quickly (i.e. faster off the line, better ability to pass vehicles, better ability to pull wheelies, etc.).  However, you do lose some on the top end (i.e. the RPMs will be higher at speed and you may not be able to go as fast overall...once over say 100+  mph).

Make sense?

What kind of affect will the new sprocket have on gas milage?   :dunno:

Thanks,
Roy
Proper riding gear is nowhere near as constricting as a wheelchair or a coffin.

It will lower it, because the engine is reving higher to attain the same speeds.  But, if you are looking for performance, you're gonna lose MPG.

Lower gas mileage ... but not as much lower as you might think ... Throttle position controls gas mileage ... you'll turn higher revs for same throttle position, and make near about the same speed ... and almost the same gas mileage ... maybe 2-4% less ... your 1 tooth on front = ~6-7% lower gearing up top...

Could you make a quick sprocket tutorial or do you have any pictures from the install for some of us mechanical dummies?  :dunno:  :)
Richard died in a motorcycle accident that was at no fault of his own.  We lost a good friend and good member of this board.  Though Rich may be gone, his legacy will live on here.

OK Its gonna be a while before I swap sprokets ... I am broke and un employed, so I got no money and no need to go anywhere  ... so I aint spending 100 bucks on a sproket and chain ... BTW the bike does need it ... no doubting that ... I might also hock the bike too before I have to ... so dont hold your breath ... On a side note if one of y'all leave your bike un attended around my house I might steal your sprokets ... then I'll be sure to get some pics ...  :thumb:  :thumb:  :thumb:

Figures.  A month or two ago I concentrated so much on shooting VIDEO footage of a sprocket swap that I didn't take sufficient still photos.

I won't be editing that footage until I can make myself finish the Valve Adjustment DVD.  (Which still didn't happen this weekend.  :x )  But I might be persuaded to toss all 10 minutes (or so) of raw, un-narrated footage onto a "Rough Edit" valve adjustment CD.

But seriously, video footage of this procedure is pretty much overkill.  Pull the shift lever, pull the 5 case bolts, and there is the sprocket.  Pop the snap ring with whatever you have, pull the old sprocket, put on the new sprocket, and reassemble in reverse.  If everything is clean in there (and you have snap ring pliers) the job should take you 10 minutes tops.

OK, if you're going down a tooth or two add another 5 to 7 minutes to adjust the chain slack.

srinath:  i wish you were still here in toronto and i'd leave my bike at your place in a second!  i could just imagine all the work you could do for my bike if i left it in your supervision. . .

kerry:  you make the whole job sound so easy. . .what tools are involved, if you don't mind me asking?
too bad you didn't get a chance to finish the valve video this weekend. . .guess there's just never enough time for anything. . .
by the way, did you get my pm for an order of the cd?

Really gentlemen, the sprocket swap is easy as can be:

1\ Remove the side cover (approximately 6 bolts) for the front sprocket.  Remember the location order (as the bolts are all different lengths).  The clutch cable connection will just slide off with the cover once all the bolts are removed.

2\ Remove the clip from the shaft on the outside of the existing sprocket, using some type of spreader (I used a needlenose plier).

3\ Slide the existing sprocket off (the chain will come off with it on the front).

4\  Remove the old sprocket from the chain and replace it with the new one.

5\  Push the new sprocket on (with the chain) and replace the clip.

6\  Replace the side cover and bolts.

7\  Loosen the rear axle bolts.

8\  Adjust the rear chain tensioning bolts (located on the back of the swing arm near the rear axle bolts) until the chain has approximately the same play in it that it had prior to the swap.

9\  Retighten the rear axle bolts.

Pretty straightforward really.  Took about 15 mins start to finish.
