Well, i got my '00 GSXR 750 tail and seat cowl in the mail today. Just looking at it, I can see that the gas tank bolts are going to work for mounting, and in the rear I may have to tap the subframe. It came with a seat cowl in a matching paint scheme (which doesnt happen to match my bike, go figure) that came with the latch. I need to figure out how I am going to get the locking mechanism on the cowl/rear seat to work as well. I also have a new front seat comming as well, I will need to trim it down to fit my tank (since the tail will be so far forward) and I will need to see how to mount it.

Also, just from looking at it, I will need to make some sort of undertail for it. MK1inCali (Tony) and I have been looking at a couple options, and hes fairly certain we will be able to make an undertail out of sheet lexan (or at least something just as temporary until I can see if a custom undertail will fit).

I will try to get over to Tony's today to take some pictures of the tail and cowl together and this weekend I will be attempting to mount it. If anyone has any questions, or would like any specific pictures let me know.

Happy new years all!!

Just an insomniac's update...I'm charging up the digi cam for tomorrow...Gonna try to get step by step pictures of how stuff lines up/doesn't with Danny's combo so it'll be pretty easy to write up a guide for the FAQ.  After my NY's party was over and I staggered in my house, I realized just how big that tail plastic is...might just be the paint...might just be the Smirnoff.  Dunno yet...will know tomorrow and pics will be included!!!

OK, ive got some good new and some bad news.

First the bad news. Without some major modification to the '01+ subframe (which im not prepared to make), I do not wish to attempt this mod. Apparently with the body style change came a subframe change which became VERY apparent when we tried to put the tail on my bike. It wouldnt even slide into place. Without cutting several inches off my subframe it will not work, which is not what i wanted to do so I can return it to stock.

So, now for the good news. THIS TAIL FIT PERFECTLY ON '89-'00 GS500 BIKES. So basically I got screwed, lol. We took the plastics off of Mk1inCali's bike (Tony) who rides a 2000 GS. Well, it fit perfectly, still need to fab mounts in the rear but thats expected, but it was unobstructed and looked DAMN good. So again, this leads to more good news.

If you go into the for sale section, I will be posting this tail up for sale. It WILL FIT an 89-00 with no serious mods to the frame (meaning no cutting necessary). It WILL NOT fit a 2001+ without serious modding (CUTTING THE SUBFRAME).

If anyone has any questions about this tail/cowl/seat or what Tony and I did with it (IE: mocking it up to see what we were looking at) PM me or ask it here.

Have a good one everybody!

Tony took a bunch, then the battery died :(. I wont have any of the tail on my bike, but with the pictures of the subframe we did get i can illustrate the difference between them.

Here is the pic of the tail as it sits on an 89-00 GS500. A link to the frame pictures is posted below. You will see that the newer subfram of the 01+ bike (mine) has the mounting portions for the grab bar and seat braces raised up several inches over the stock setup of the earlier years (89-00). Because of that raise i cannot mount the GSXR tail on the newer style GS. However, since the pre 01+ styles do not have the raised up subframe it fits perfectly. There you have it.

Sorry to hear the subframe changed to a degree that the tail wouldnt fit. More descriptions and pictures would be great (to add to FAQ forum). Also pics of the tail on Tony's bike would be great too.

Cant wait to see the pictures of the subframe. Did you take any pictures of the two subframes side by side for comparison. I remember when Doug did the R6 tail he had to significantly modify everything mounted to the rear subframe but the subframe itself was untouched...

Uploading the new picts to my yahoo account right now...if you are reading this...check my sig's link and see the GSXR tail on a '00 GS500.

Gonna post direct links so you all don't have to search tomorrow...too tired right now to figure out how to post images.  Can I get some PM help from somebody/link on how to, I couldn't find any tips and couldn't figure it out by myself.  Jeez, with how difficult it is for me, you'd think I'd have my own stupid title by now...

But...since you can see the picts...there are 3 pieces of metal that need to be modded/cut off the main subframe to get this particular tail on.  The  main cross hoop at the very back of the subframe and the matching hoops on the outside of each side of the frame where the 01+ plastic bolts on.  I'll highlight which ones need to be cut off/modded tomorrow after work.  Aside from those 3 pieces, it would be a straightforward install on an 01+, you'd just have to fab up a rear support for the seat, so you don't crack the plastic...along with rigging up a support that the seat latch will attach to, and hold the cowl/passenger seat down.  You'd need to modify a GSXR undertail and make custom mounts for it or alternately, fabricate your own undertail and taillight mounts.

As far as fitting the lines of the bike...well...personally, I thought it would change the riding position enough to warrant the slightly out-of-place looks it has.  My mom said it was ugly and didn't fit the rest of the bike at all, but she is really really picky.  Danny drooled over it, as did quite a few 20-something aged friends of ours that came over to check it out.  I think it'd flow a lot better with an 01+ tank since the 89-00's are really quite skinny.

I'd do the swap, but I've got too many other projects going right now, especially with school starting in 2 weeks again, so I just won't have time for it.  I'd really like how this tail would look on a faired bike, especially an Aluizio GS500R kit with a conversion tank to look like an 01+.  Since it would position you lower, it'd make the whole bike seem more aggressive and I would like that, but I'm young and spritely.

Anyway, I'd consider this definitely do-able, but you'd need fabrication skills with both plastic (for modding the undertail/taillight region) and metal bracketry (for support of the plastic and to get the latch positioned correctly to work like stock).

I'd have to see how a GSXR undertail kit would fit, but if there wasn't a whole lot of modding that needed to be done to secure that, I'd say this would be a full weekend project.  Start on it early Saturday morning and you'd be canyon thrashing by middle of Sunday with almost constant work in between.
