OK anyone ever use one of those sideplay camshaft shims ... I need to get info ... the thinnest is 1.1 mm, and I cannot for the life of me ever figure out how you can get that in there ... its freaking huge compared to the gap I got ... and my motor is definetely worn. So what gives ... maybe its supposed to take up a different spot and not that real place where the clearance is measured ... BTW I am still under 1/2 mm down in the part that clamps in under the tower.

Copper sealing washer?  Those are pretty thin.

These are large like their ID is as big as the camshaft end, and the OD is over 1.5 inches ... and they are steel, 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 mm thickness and I cant even fit the thinnnest. meanwhile the valves clack like crazy and they are all in spec and more than that ... low end of the spec ...

JLKasper described his experience in THIS POST.  As he mentioned, I thought the thinnest shim (the stock one) was actually 1.0mm.  Not that it will help, given your .5mm gap....

As far as where the shim goes, it seems pretty clear from the parts fiche diagram.  (Items 3 and 10.)  Is that where you have been taking your measurments?

Hmm...  I thought we decided sometime ago that those side play shims are only for some models of GS? Linky  It seems to me that those cam that can take side play shims already have shims on them--you just replace those with fatter shims.

Mine has side play, though not as large as 0.5mm.  What did you do, Srinath?  Been putting sand in during your oil change?   :nana:  :mrgreen:  Seriously, since your side play is huge, why not get the thinnest 1.0 shim and sand it down to fit?

All of the cams (from about 6 or so heads) that I have removed had shims on them. Never measured any of them though. Ron Ayers has 3 different part numbers for them, apparently different thicknesses but they are not specified on their site.

OK I am trying to check that spot that is marked by parts 3 and 10 ...
The thing is my cam tower is further to the outside than the actual head. There is just about 1mm between the inner edge of the cam tower and the outer edge of the cam shaft ridge (or whatever you call a area of flared larger diamater shaft) ... but between the inner edge of the head and the outer edge of the ridge ... just about .5mm ... I may build .5 mm material on the inner edge of the cam tower if I have to ... I might skip on that if i feel lazy and live with a noisy motor.

I did not notice that. The numbers after the decimal point were cut off of the screen.

OK I am going to attempt to put aluminum on the inside of the thing and shaving it down ... I dont think I can ever fit a shim in there ... my head needs 1/2 mm taken off from near the bushing area ... brfore a shim will fit in there.
