Hey,
I decided to do a last min. ride this afternoon down to Dauphin Island to see what hurricane Ivan did to it. I'd say overall it wasnt too bad just lots of damaged roofs. OH and sand LOTS OF SAND everywhere. Sand is not fun to ride thru btw. :o Its like riding on marbles. Heres a few pics...

Random Beach pic.

Again.

I leaned against the rail on that creaky pier and it moved wayyy too much :o

Historic Ft Gaines- ever heard "damn the torpedos full speed ahead" thats right off the coast from here.

View from where a canon once was, which would now hit an oil rig.

Had to put that one in there.

A pier that the hurrican didnt like.

Ok thats it. Sorry its so long, prob not that interesting eaither w/ pics via my cheapo digital cam. Oh well.

I love Dauphin Island, I went fishing there with my uncle when he was working in Mississippi but now he's moved to Ohio so I don't get to visit it anymore  :(

Kerry

Cool pics, ash!

Dauphin Island looks a lot different than Utah, but you reminded me that I hadn't posted my pictures from last Saturday's ride yet.

My wife asked me to pick up a book for her at a bookstore in Salt Lake City.  Rather than ride straight up the freeway from Map Point 1 to Map Point 6 (about 41 miles) and back, I decided to go the long way:

I ran into dense fog (and about 33 degrees) a couple miles before Map Point 2.  I stopped to take several pictures of the entrance road to Eagle Mountain City, a booming community out in the "desert" where there was next-to-nothing just 10 years ago.

Several miles later I stopped to take a picture of these contraptions outside historic Fairfield, a stop on the Pony Express.  On the left is a weather station that feeds data to the National Weather Service (I suppose).  The tower on the right is one of several in this general area.  I've been told that if there is a dangerous leak from the Army chemical dump just below Map Point 4, that thing will make LOUD noises and maybe even give verbal instructions.  (Like "EVACUATE!")  Lots of folks come out here to ride their 4-wheelers and whatnot, so I guess something LOUD is just the ticket.

Once I rode over the ridgeline (the southern-most tip of my route) I was back in the sunlight.  About a mile before Map Point 4 I faced east and took this picture of the moonrise...

... and about a mile AFTER Map Point 4 I faced west and took this shot:

I turned right and headed north before entering that fog bank.  But by Map Point 5 I was back in the "soup".  Nasty stuff when it's cold!

What with the fog and the sun going down, there was nothing to photograph until I got to the city.  Not finding a parking spot near my assigned destination, I parked in my usual place (a secluded church parking lot a couple blocks from Temple Square) and hiked several blocks back to the bookstore:

I took a slight detour on the way back to my bike and got some night shots of Temple Square.  This is one of the better ones:

And when I had walked the remaining 3 blocks, there was Ed's old bike ... waiting for me like man's best friend:

Wow------I thought roads that long and that straight and that lonesome only existed in films like Bonny & Clyde etc, awe inspiring for me but probably not so if you live there!

I think Kerry once refered to them as an "Aquired taste"

Wow, cool pics from both you guys.  I live about 4 hours from the Alabama coast and I was really curious about the storm damage down there.

Hey Kerry, I'm gonna be in SLC Feb 26 thru Mar 3 for a tradeshow.  I've been wanting to ask you about things in the city that I can't miss.  I probably won't have much free time, but I want to sight-see some, as I've never been there before.

Damn, you guys have awesome scenery.  All we have here in central IL is cornfields and bean fields, and more cornfields.  I'd like to be able to ride on some roads that actually curve too.  The road around the lake is pretty good, but dangerous with all the blind driveways and old people in Caddys that pull out in front of you, and the deer.

Hey, ashman. . .
Is there a bar down there around Dauphin Island called "Judge Roy Bean's"?  I went there once and I can't remember where it is. . .There was a goat, a dog and a cat in there.  The goat had huge horns and walked to the side door of the bar. . . pushed the door open and walked outside.   Strange.

Ah, so you went without me huh?  No love!!   :(   Sounds like the sand wouldn't have been to much fun for me anyway.  I might try to ride down next weekend to take a look.  The Dauphin Island residents are a speical group.  They complain about their beaches eroding, but seem to forget that they are a barrier island.  Of course it is going to erode.  Did you go in the Coast Guard area at all?  That is the area I am most familar with since my Dad was in the Coast Guard.

I've lived 40 miles from SLC for over 20 years now, but I don't consider myself an expert on "things to see and do" there.  I have been oddly unmotivated about getting to know the city inside and out.  I never even schmoozed around up there during the '02 Olympics!  But I CAN tell you about a few things that _I_ think are "cool", and where to find fast food when you're downtown, etc.

Let's PM / email about it, K?

Nice pictures guys. I will take a camera next time I ride down to the English south coast and show you some pictures of Brighton.

Doesn't Donny Osmond come from SLC? He's still big over here :?

By the way, I notice you've got tank bags on your bikes - don't they scratch the tank? I've heard they do?

I've got a British neighbor who recently showed me some nice photos from a "coffee table book" of the different regions of England.  He specifically flipped through the ones from the Brighton area.  It looks nice!  I'll look forward to seeing the ones you choose to snap.

Quote from: SpitfireDoesn't Donny Osmond come from SLC? He's still big over here :?
Actually, Donnie & family are from the Provo/Orem area.  The large building in which the Donnie & Marie TV show was filmed is less than a mile from my house.  I heard it was pretty funny when the big-name guest stars would have to fly into SLC and then drive 40+ miles to "Nowheresville" to do the gig.

Quote from: SpitfireBy the way, I notice you've got tank bags on your bikes - don't they scratch the tank? I've heard they do?
I have put that bag on and taken it off twice each weekday for years now.  Yes, if you inspect the tank with an angled light you can see "micro-scratches" all over it.  But my bike is to ride more than to look at -- if I have to choose between a not-quite-pristine tank and hauling a backpack or something, I'll choose the tankbag every time!

Cool, I'm DLing that pic now.  I really like mountain scenes.  Here is a pic of the view from the condo me and my wife stayed at in the Smoky Mtns.  Unfortunately, that was before I had my bike :(  That would have been a blast.  Although I didn't really see any sportbikers when we were there; tons of Harleys though.

I like that Temple Square photo also.  What is that place?  It looks cool at night.

kerry can i get a full size of the moonrise as well? yet another desktop worthy pic
