Yup I recieved the kit last Thursday.  I should have my bike done by Monday, so I'll send it along to pixelmonkey once I'm finished.

Kerry

If you can't find a local source, MrCycles has shims for $7.97.

BTW ... since those valves are tight, do you know HOW tight they are?  (See the TOO TIGHT section on my Valve Shim Selection Chart.)

Hopefully someone who uses Srinath's kit will pony up for a thin "test shim" (say, 2.30mm) for just such occasions.

Yea we swapped the thin stuff with Kerry's kit I think. My kit has thick ones, 260 and up in plenty and pretty poor on the thin ones. How about you measure the ones you pulled out and measure the 260's I have and put the thinnest ones in. The 260 is just a number, they wear albeit slowly and usually 258 or 257 is common among 260's.
Cool.
Srinath.

Yeah, I used your digital calipers to measure them.  I was kind of in a rush because I was running out of daylight, but there wasn't anything smaller than the shims I already had in there.

No, I have no idea how tight they really are.  Rema1000 and I were discussing replenishing Srinath's kit with thinner shims.  Tomorrow, I will check with another local place (referred to me by the local Triumph/BMW dealer, thanks davipu!) on pricing and availability.  Unfortunately, that place and the Suzuki dealer were closed today.

Okay, rechecked the valve clearances again today once I purchased a few thinner shims.  Looks like I need two 2.55 shims, but none are available locally.  Rema1000 is purchasing some of these shims to contribute to the kit, so we'll replenish some of the thinner shims that seem to be so popular.

Shims in Srinath's kit:

4x 2.60
1x 2.65
2x 2.70
1x 2.72
1x 2.80

To this kit I have added:

2x 2.45
2x 2.50

Oddly I am over 260, the thinnest shim in my 89 is a 260. They have all moved from 250-270 to 260-275. Basically no wear on the cams ...
Cool.
Srinath.

Xtalman, who is on the list for Srinath's kit next?  I'd like to get it again since I'm still a little tight with 255 and 260s in mine.

Where would this put me in line for Srinath's kit?

Thanks!

joerocker,

I will keep it until I get two 2.55 shims, then I'll send it to Rema1000.  After that, I believe you would be next in line.

It will take at least until next week before I receive the 2.55 shims.  Nobody local has any in that size.  Expect at least two to three weeks before you receive the kit.

Ok I solved my problem from the other post (stuck valve cover) but now have a "problem" I could use some input on.  My bike's a '96 with 10,500 miles.  I've had it since 6,000 and have never checked the valves.  Don't know if it was ever done before.

Anyway, all 4 of the valves were tighter than the .04 shim in Kerry's kit, but I could pretty easily rotate the shim with my finger on all of them.  According to Kerry's commentary, that probably means they're ok.  I swapped out the left intake shim (a 265) for a 255 (actually measured 2.58 ) from the kit, which was the next smallest.  Now it was too loose for the .08 shim.  I put the 265 back in and it was back to how it was before.

So should I just feel fortunate that they're all still good, or do you think maybe I did something incorrectly?

jeff

Kerry

With the 255 shim in you probably had about .10 mm of clearance, which makes sense.
    .02 or .03 existing clearance, plus 2.65-2.58 (.07 shim thickness difference) = .09 or .10mm clearance.[/list:u]I'll bet a 260 shim would be perfect.

But yeah - for now you're probably OK.  Just don't let it go too long before your next checkup.  :)

My 89's first valve adjustment was at 15K ... usually 10-15K+ is possible ... Think about this ... in 47K I have moved an average of 3 shim sizes on all valves ... whihc works to ~ one size on all 4 in 15K ... assuming they all wear equally whihc is almost the case ... BTW I have only put thicker shims in ... never had to go thinner ... so no idea what that might be if yours is getting thinner ...
    Cool.

I've wondered the same thing...  With things wearing and the way the valves are set up, you'd think we'd ALL need thicker not thinner shims. All mine were (and still are) too tight.

    get r' done jeff?

Yeah Chris I gave everything a re-check to make sure I didn't do something too stupid.  It'll be in the mail tomorrow!

Srinath's kit is now on its way to Rema1000.  In addition to the shims I added to the kit, Rema1000 contributed several more, 2.55 and smaller, including a 2.15(?) mm test shim.  The kit should now have a fairly complete range of shims.

Thanks for sending this kit around, my bike runs smoooooth now!  Awesome DVD too Kerry.

And I believe I'm after Rema1000.  I'll add my shims too...

    Rema1000

Srinath's kit sent to Joerocker today.  Contents:
21 shims (I added 6); I think it has at least one of everything from 240 to 275 (but that probably won't last too long)
    allen wrench
    digital caliper
    feeler gauge set
    Motion Pro tool
    screwdriver
    CD Rom with Kerry's video

...I think that's it (this is from memory).  It might help if we do a shim-swap between the two kits to distribute the sizes better.  If the kits make it around enough for the demand to slack-off, then they might even be combined, as the shim selection is really what makes the kit "better than the dealer".

Also, if anyone wants to "thank" the group, you could buy the "ELORA German Thin Blade Metric Feeler Gauge" ($20 shipped from Samstag Sales) before the kit gets to you, and leave the gauge in the kit when you're done (after all, you probably wouldn't need it again for a year anyways).

You forgot about the tweezers (and the rubber band and the tissue   )

Another thing that would be nice to have is a telescoping magnet  to pull out the valve shims once the valve tool was used.  I had trouble with the tweezers, and only bought a magnet after I had finished with the kit.  $2.99 at Autozone.

Hey Chris.  I sent it off on the 3rd or 4th, so you should be getting it anytime now.  If it's not there in a few days lemme know and I'll see if the post office can give any insight.
