I just recently bought a 92 gs500 as my first bike.  I have an appointment to get it registered later this week but I can't find the requirements for registering a bike in CA.  Do you need proof of insurance or a smog certificate in order to get it registered?  I went to the DMV's website but couldn't find anything. I also called the DMV and got nothing but a damn machine asking me anything but what i needed to know. If anybody could help me out that'd be great. Thanks!

all they did for my 01:

Show them the bill of sale and the signed off on pink slip.

Physical inspection of the bike (mine had a cali emissions sticker so i was good). Basically they take your frame and engine numbers make sure they match.

And i cannot remember about the insurance, I know i had the bike insured the day after i got it, rode around on it like that for a while before i was able to go get the title transferred.

If the bike was previously registered in CA, they won't even need to look at it.  If it's from another state they will probably do a visual inspection and check the VIN, etc.  Just bring the title, and if you have one, the bill of sale. Technically I believe you're *supposed* to have proof of insurance too, but they never asked me for that.  :)  It's actually quite easy. Bikes don't need smog certification in CA, which is a huge plus.  Since it's a 92, it should be super cheap to register too. I would guess about 50-60 bucks for the year (which I know is pretty expensive compared to other states, but for CA that's dirt cheap!) Good luck, and if you can't get it registered the first time, you can always drive without registration for a while.  ;)  (ask me how I know   )
