Cable lock: 1 - GS: 0

So I got this cable lock to lock my bike up with when I'm not around. I decided to put it on last night to help me get in the habit of taking it on and off. Well, it didn't work out so well.

I had it wrapped around the fork and the wheel, the idea was that it wouldn't move. So I take my disc lock off, roll the bike backwards out of the garage, turn it around, and start riding down my driveway. Nothing strange. Until my bike comes to a stop.

The cable wrapped around the front axle on the left side of all sides, destroying my speedo sensor. I feel like a total idiot. So I rip the cable off (no small task) and proceed onto my sunday ride, hoping my front tire doesn't suddenly lock up. All went well.

So I get home, tear my wheel off, and look at the sensor. It's all jacked up. I tried fixing it, but it wouldn't work. I dont' know if my cable is broken or just the sensor. I took all the moving parts out from the inside of the sensor so it would stop making funny noises. Took the caliper off, and put the tire back on, followed by the caliper again.

So I go for a test ride, wheel spins fine. I notice a grinding when I coast down to a low speed. Look at caliper. Caliper is sparking. Why is my caliper sparking. *sigh* So I parked it and came here to ask for some advice.

And to ask if anyone has a spare speedo sensor. I'd rather avoid trying to et one from the Stealer. They take way too long and charge way too much.

Anyway if anyone has any idea why my calipers are sparking/grinding (do the pads normally spark?) and what I can do to fix it, let me know. I was planning on doing a road trip with my bike next week.

Seems to me you misaligned the wheel when the cable started binding up.  Probably pushed it to the other side a bit.  Something wrapping up like that can put a lot of force on the axle to push it aside.  Maybe the brake calipers held the wheel from moving perfectly to the side and now it's also crooked.

Unless you really want a speedo just remember that in 6th your speed is about 10mph higher than your tach is reading.  6,000=70mpg

Try putting the cable on the other side and have it bind up as much as the other side did, maybe it will push it back...  Sorry, couldn't resist...

Good luck getting it fixed.

:o  if that's true than there is something SERIOUSLY wrong with my bike. There is no way that I get 70mpg when the tach shows 6k.

It seems to me that sparking means metal-metal contact.  Is it sparking all the time or just when you brake?  Maybe you lost one side of the brake pad and the rotor is pushing against something else.

Whatever it is, don't fret.  It can always be fixed.  Relax and think logically.

Sweet... thanks!

I went ahead and bid on the ebay speedo. Auction closes in like 5 days. I'll let you all know whether or not I win the auction. If I don't I'll definitely take someone up on their offer here. Thanks for the support in my moment of stupidity :)

Hope no one else needs one cause I can't bid too high :P

I have a couple of speedo sensors if you still need one. Not sure if I have a cable.
