What error message do you get on boot?  Sometimes the hard drives just work loose from their connectors on these old thinkpads.

Operating system not found ... so you think it needs a Hard drive adjustment cos its loose ... They have shims for them ???        or maybe they are threaded adjusters ...        I'll check ... its making a low ticking noise at like 1/2 to 3/4 second intervals when its powered up.
Cool.

Dead Hard drives. Fun.

Given the clicking noise, I would guess that the drive is gone. Every time that I have had a drive make clicking noises, I have had to replace it.

Hard drive replacement usually isn't that hard. On some PC laptops the hard drive is in a tray that you can pull out. Otherwise you're going to have to take the thing apart. If you have a dell, they have dissasembly/reassembly guides  on their support site for some laptops if you look hard enough. Otherwise, just don't pull too hard on anything, remember where screws go and remember to put all of them back (yes, I have forgotten that last one before   )

it should be under warranty... call ibm.

I have software recovery tools I can try if there's data you NEED back.

If it's not under warranty, PM me.  I think I have a 20-30gb 2.5" hdd laying around somewheres

Clicking noises, bummer, drive's probably not spinning up.  Drive bearings either went out or are stuck.  You can try to unstick them by pulling the drive and giving it 3-4 sharp twists (get platters spinning).  If that doesn't work then just replace it (try www.pricewatch.com for cheap drives).

your drive's dead if the connector is still good.

Oh ... OK can anyone tell me where the damn hard drive is on a T 40 thinkpad ... Rather not yank everyhting out if I can help ... cos I am certain I'd break 1/2 the stuff while pulling it apart ...
Cool.

Perhaps partitions got corrupted somehow?  You should find out who your HD manufacturer is, then get the software needed (Such as Maxtor's PowerMax and MaxBlast programs). There is a way to reset the harddrive to it's original factory settings by resetting all drive "bytes" to 0...

NO don't open it

light tap it.. with a screwdriver.  Then freeze it, then tap it a couple times lightly, then put in back in the pc.  sometimes the bearing grease gets screwed up.  I've fixed 'clunking' hdd's a couple times doing that.

more than likely it's not gonna work.. and if it does it won't work for long

it *should* be under warranty though?  T40's aren't that old at all

that's what pc geeks like us call the "click of death"

pretty much you need it replaced.  I wouldn't mess with it too much,  you can buy a new hdd and attach that as a slave.  you might be able to retrieve some of your files that way.  if you want you can even send it to me and i'll try to burn your stuff into a cd and send it to you.  :thumb:
