I would be apprehensive to make my own shims. If you have the wrong temper, you risk splitting a shim or excessive wear on the shim. Then end up with possible engine damage.

I have a head with a hole in the cam gallery from a split shim. The piston has minor scarring from hitting the valve. Not sure if the valve is bent. I bought it this way.

The valve cover gasket is re-useable, unless damaged.
Common sense in not very common.

Great find!  I think Rema1000 mentioned this source to me recently.

Here's a (faster) direct link to the page.

Also valve cover gasket will be good for many many open and shut iterations ... not somehting you replace too often ... BTW Athena has a kit that right about $50 USD ... might want to check partsnmore.com for it.
Cool.

Yep (click for big img):

$5/shim + $4.50 shipping (shipping costs a little less if you order by phone).  Nice guy... he tried to talk some sense into me when I was ordering 7 shims for a GS500 :) , but I explained about our kits.  Tell him GSTwins.com sent you...  I think he'll remember.

Cool.  I've been looking for an excuse to ask them to take a few shims in trade :) .

But actually, that wasn't their biggest mistake: I told them to ship the shims to Xtalman, who had Srinath's kit at the time.  They sent him the shims I ordered... along with the receipt showing my full credit card number and its expiration date  :o  .  Now, really, even if it were shipped directly to me, those numbers do not belong inside the mail!  Even my credit card company won't put those numbers in the mail together (except when they mail the card itself).
