Finally getting back to the bike...

Now that the move is done and the new baby is home and settled, I finally have time to work on my bike.  I lost my only key for it, so my first priority is to get that taken care of.  How hard is it to get the ignition out to get the code?  Do I have to take apart the entire front end?

I also plan to:

Clean and rejet my carbs
Replace sparkplugs (Need input on what's the best for this)
Replace the gas tank with an undented one I just purchased
Check and do the valve shims.

Anyone in the MD area know a good place to take the tank and fenders to for a new paint job?
Cheers,

Here are a couple spark plug-related threads that may help.  The first one talks about the NGK plugs that surround the OEM-rated ones, and the second lists some supposed equivalents.  (Anyone care to reply on the 2nd thread?)
Spark Plugs.. do i have the right one?

sparkplug choices[/list:u]Oh yeah - and here is the source for the info I posted in the first thread - from the Haynes manual, of course:

Kerry, do I read that right?  If I run in early spring I should run a hot-spark plug?  Gee, maybe that's an idea I should follow up on...

Out here in mid-Michigan, I'll be fighting cold until end-April.  I may just try a pair until then to see if they burn cleaner than the standard set.

Thanks for posting that segment of the manual.   :thumb:

Yep, I use the RA8HC (similar to the DPR7EA9).  Although I've been having rough starts on one cylinder... but the other side is fine, so it's probably not the plug type.

    No code?  Aaaarrrrrgggghhhhh!!

So how hard is it to get the upper triple out?

Take off the dash ... and the handle bars and then you can take it off alinge with the top plate ... send it to me ... and I'll make it work with any key you provide ... OK Keyway has to match ... but other than that ... and no I cannot cut you a key ... I can cut the lock only ... to match your key ...

I had the same problem.  I did swap out the ignition.  You can get a new one from Dennis Kirk, but all of the other keys were wrong/gone/mis-matched.

Many locksmiths will come out to your house and make you a full set right on the bike for like $50.00.  I had a guy that was going to drive 29 miles each way to my house and make me a new key for $50.   Pretty easy, in my book.

If you're considering a new ignition / lock unit, check out the oddly-named Over 4K RPM nothing thread.

For others, search for "EMGO ignition".
