OK, so I've read all the FAQ posts for rejetting, cleaning, etc. I bought my bike already rejetted for a V&H with a stock air filter. I dropped in a UNI, but I haven't rejetted. I also just added the ignition advancer...Should I rejet? Even if I don't, I'm getting crappy gas mileage, so I want to check the floats...now, my question is, what should I have on hand before I begin this job, to finish it in one sitting...obviously, if I rejet, the jets, and I need tools, I'm talking more specifically about gaskets,o-rings,lubricants, etc...THANKS guys!

I am rejetted to #150s, K&N pods, aftermarket pipe and I did 76mpg last weekend on the freeway.

I think you rejet for the UNI... I don't remember what size mains to use...check the FAQ.

I would buy some 1/4" clear vinyl aquarium air tube...Home Depot...so you can check your float heights...except when I did them I used a ruler when bending the metal prong and they came out perfect.

Dom what do you have in for pilots right now?  Also, if your floats are off how do you adjust them?

Dom

Sprint,

Kerry has the exact measurement for the float heights.  It involves bending the little metal prong thing that the needle hangs from until something measures 14.7mm or something.  I can't remember exactly what I needed to do, but I remember that you measure until right after the tab depresses that little button, no more, no less.  Kerry's measurement worked perfectly.

I have 37.5 pilots in right now...stockers.  I ordered some #40s from Srinath a little while ago.  I'm pretty sure they'll be here sometime this year.

Or keep this up and they wont ...  :guns:  :guns:  :guns:

still looking for advice on what I need to work on the carbs, supply wise, and also the proper way to adjust the float height, the Clymers is a bit confusing on this....

Adjusting is always by bending that tab ... The check can be done quite well from outside with that U tube method ...
Cool.

If first time carb work, you might need an impact screw driver to loosen the philip screws since they can be a little tight.  Srinath recommends replacing those screws with better allen bolts and I concur.  My carb screws are a little damaged from the several times I took them apart.

You will also need a small flat head screwdriver to take out the pilot jets.

And carb cleaner if your carb is really dirty.  Carb cleaner will eat paint, so take appropriate precautions.  I use simple green most of the time myself.

If your air mixture screw is plugged, you probably want to drill them out.  So, a drill with the correct drill bit.

One more thing: Keep an eye on the o-rings, especially the tiny ones on the top (just below the vacuum spigots of the black plastic top covers).  Lose those and you'll be pulling your hair out trying to idle it right, cleaning soot off your spark plugs or tie your shoe laces, never mind jetting it.

As for gaskets, buy a set of carb gaskets (you'll need two).  I got mine from PartsNMore.  You probably can reuse your old ones if they are OK.  I reused mine for a long time until my tiny o-ring broke a couple of years ago (I have an 89 that I bought in 96).

Since you have read the FAQs and whatnot, why not you list the items you think you will need and let the other forum members tell you if you are missing something?

HTH.

Cheers,
e.

The Haynes page linked to from this old thread should  have all the info you need.

For my best attempt at answering the "tools needed" question, see this post.
